ARCHIVED Hives Again...hormonal?
pricklypear1971 replied to seraphim's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
In retrospect (and at the time I noticed it), my hormones were all messed up at the time my DH and celiac and thyroid was at their worst. I suggest hormone testing, saliva and blood...and cortisol testing. I suspect you need adrenal support. I'd check thyroid, too. You may need hormone supplementation - probably progesterone. -
ARCHIVED What In The World Is Going On With My Body
pricklypear1971 replied to niese's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Keep a food log. Also, consider that you may now be more sensitive to gluten cc. Your symptoms may change. Anyone else at home eat gluten? -
ARCHIVED Hi, New Here, And To Gluten-Free Cooking.
pricklypear1971 replied to ChiTownZee's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I *believe* there are professional groups to help commercial bakers through the process. I swear there's another thread on here regarding a restaurant, where names are mentioned. Perhaps this will help: Open Original Shared Link Cross contamination is a huge issue for people with Celiac Disease...and the minute you put a gluten-free item out, you'll get... -
ARCHIVED Iron Deficiancy Anemia
pricklypear1971 replied to Adalaide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would request a trial on thyroid meds, regardless. It's not just about the lab numbers. You have symptoms. If it doesn't work, at least you tried. There is new acceptance in the medical societies/pubs about labs not being all there is to thyroid. Finally. Would you mind posting the lab results? -
ARCHIVED Cromolyn Makes My Food Reactions Less Intense
pricklypear1971 replied to Laura Wesson's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I used topical Cromolyn in a skin cream for my DH. It worked a bit, some if the time...at a certain stage in the lesion. I bought the liquid Cromolyn and poured it in the skin cream. -

I second that. -
ARCHIVED Hello, Gluten-Induced Anger. Nice To See You Again.
pricklypear1971 replied to BelleVie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I once started explaining how gluten made me feel angry, and started to apologize to my husband in advance. He started laughing and informed me it was crystal clear to him when I got in it - anger, withdrawal, general b%$@#y moodiness. Basically, no warning required! Btw, I don't think it does that anymore. Maybe if I was on a challenge? I'm pretty mellow... -
ARCHIVED Iron Deficiancy Anemia
pricklypear1971 replied to Adalaide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I started iron (I was low on every test) the supplements made me want to vomit. All day long. I had to scale back from 2 pills to 1. That helped. Then, I just had to give it 2 weeks. After that, it was miraculously ok. I did accidentally sensitize myself to iron again, though, when I went off my supplements after a stomach virus. When I started them... -
ARCHIVED Quick Breakfast Ideas, Out Of The House?
pricklypear1971 replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I hate to break it to you, but breakfast (especially a fast one) is the toughest meal of the day, IMO. I suggest a morning of preassembling your own bagel/egg sandwiches and freeze them - and take one to work and nuke it. I also suggest boiling a few eggs, a few prepacked containers of salsa or guac...get the idea? Prep ahead. -

ARCHIVED Help! Glutened And Still Suffering After Three Weeks
pricklypear1971 replied to CR5442's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Personally, I've experienced super fast recoveries and extended recoveries. When it's a long one, its because exposure triggers some sort of all-over system wide autoimmune reaction. I'm generally at higher risk if its allergy season...my body goes into a spin. Try an OTC antihistamine every other day or so. I use Costco's generic Claritin or Claritin... -

ARCHIVED Antibiotic Use Linked To Celiac Disease Development - Healio
pricklypear1971 replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I can give one good reason for the corellation of antibiotic use and celiac disease: when you say you feel sick, doctors start shoving meds of all types, antibiotics being one if the most common, down your throat to fix the problem. The more you complain, the more you get. No one wants to hear this but we need to go to some sort of screening. Gluten is... -
ARCHIVED A Relaxing Drink Suggestion
pricklypear1971 replied to Renaye's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Do you have an issue with herbs, or tea? If it is tea leaf you have an issue with there are many herbal (zero tea leaf) "teas" out there. Does coconut bother you? What about a coconut water based drink? Almond milk? Rice milk? If you can do one of the above milks, you could add herbs (if they don't bother you) to make a chai type drink. I'd assume smoothies... -
ARCHIVED Update: Some Progress Some Regression
pricklypear1971 replied to D-borealis's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sleep disturbance is a frequent gluten recovery phenomenon with adults - I'm sure it can occur with kids, too. Just give it time. It took at least a few months for mine to start normalizing. As far as the rash goes, just give it time. All of her skin/hair care is gluten-free, right? If its DH you'll know soon...because it will happen after gluten exposure... -
ARCHIVED I Have So Many Questions
pricklypear1971 replied to ItchyAbby's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Ssshhhh.... I know how it feels to think you're tempting fate to talk about it. There was a point where I started addressing the rash like a person with a complete asshat personality.... When I had success with the low iodine addition to the gluten-free I felt like I had Asshat by the neck, and I smiled. It was so nice to KNOW. No testing, no doctor... -
You need to ask for another FULL CELIAC PANEL. just because you we're tested years ago and negative, doesn't mean you are negative today. If they won't test you and you have no alternative, then go gluten-free and save your life. Literally. Everyone differs on how long it takes to feel better. Just start doing it, then tackle each issue as it arises....

ARCHIVED Two Weeks In - Crying My Eyes Out!
pricklypear1971 replied to MxMyownsummer's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, we've all been there. And we all still make mistakes, years into it. And sometimes, despite doing everything right...gluten still finds you. That's life. But getting better, and occasionally ill, beats the heck outta being sick 24/7. IMO, anyway.- 7 replies

ARCHIVED I Have So Many Questions
pricklypear1971 replied to ItchyAbby's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Yes, I eat sushi and seaweed now without restriction. I eat everything except gluten. I recommend pet food be gluten free. You play in it, dog eats it and drags it around, licks you...you get the pic. If you are making progress, you're going the right direction. Learning gluten-free is a process - dont expect yourself to be perfect up front. Same... -
Get your thyroid and hormones checked. I went through a losing weight phase, then a gaining phase...granted, I do have thyroid disease but I do understand the speed at which it happens. I think my gain was from two things: villi started working (to some degree), and my thyroid continued to deteriorate, also further affecting my hormones. You probably...

ARCHIVED I Have So Many Questions
pricklypear1971 replied to ItchyAbby's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I use Vanicream - the thick version. If I'm not mistaken, some Cetaphil contains gluten. My favorite moisturizers were Vanicream and Vaseline. Neither I would have touched with a ten foot pole prior to The Damn Rash, but most natural lotions or oils seemed to either contain gluten or make my rash burn. So there ya go. I eat everything except gluten. It probably... -
ARCHIVED I Have So Many Questions
pricklypear1971 replied to ItchyAbby's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I followed the thyca diet. I ate rice in moderation. I was cool with dropping other grains...I probably ate corn/quinoa pasta a bit. I probably ate celery and legumes in moderation. I added back milk first. Life without butter and half n half blew. Then ice cream (gelato), after eggs. I still hold a grudge against the world for the no milk and whole egg... -
ARCHIVED I Have So Many Questions
pricklypear1971 replied to ItchyAbby's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
1) I get swollen lymph nodes, flu-like feeling, and a very weird under the skin pinprick rash from sulfa drugs. But that's just me. 2) as far as adrenals go, I take Pure Encapsulations products: DHEA 5 mg - 1 each morning ADR Formula - ND told me 2 in morning, 1 early afternoon. I take 1 in the am now. I take thyroid meds... I am also on vitamin... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac - Trying To Plan For 2 Day Meeting Out Of Town?
pricklypear1971 replied to upsilamba's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Most hotels (assuming it has a restaurant) can do safe gluten-free options. Call the hotel directly to arrange how to order your food. Call the restaurant and ask if they have gluten-free options. Bbq can be ok - stick with meat and plain side like corn if they sound promising. Google for a local (to that area) celiac group - look at restaurant ratings... -
ARCHIVED Flying In Just In Time For Dinner--Help
pricklypear1971 replied to babalimom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Stop at a grocery store and grab cold cuts, cheese, fruit, sliceable raw veggie. Make yourself a plate at dinner. Make sure you have eggs and fruit for breakfast (unless you take cereal with you) then go back to the store Take a cooking kit with you - cutting board, plastic/wood utensils, colander. Use them to prep your food. Just muddle through it - you...
