  1. Well, if you keep up with an elimination schedule surely you'll stumble across what triggers your bloating. Corn is a big culprit. I've heard quite a bit about swelling regarding salicylates and amines. Nightshades are a common group.
  2. Holy crap, I've heard it all now...99% gluten free. Wow. Great write-up!
  3. Okay, I do have some experience in the split household thing. But not regarding Celiac.... If the interest in the cause of the belly is mutual... then it's a good start. You MUST find a way to present this in a NEUTRAL way...as in a medical article, or a book about Celiac disease. You might (and this may already be enough to make Mom flip) start...
  4. Like Kareng said, a lot of Celiacs have issue with milk products - lactose from the damaged villi in the intestines and some have casein issues (protein in milk). It's one of those things Celiacs should try going without at least once to see if it makes a difference in how they feel. Soy covers all soy products - the whole bean to sauce to food additives...
  5. When the kids come to visit, have them wash up with soap and water. Explain it to your partner and her children, and then ask the kids to do it ....and I'm sure it will all work out fine. Just explain it nicely and supervise. They catch on. If it's a situation where the kids are eating gluten and you're around (and I assume it isn't your house) then you...
  6. Oh hon, here's another dose. You just had a baby. The fact that you are able to get as far as you've gotten is a freaking miracle. We all have our moments of doubt and anger and fight about this disease, and having a doctor telling you it isn't Celiac when you had a high positive on an antibody test is ridiculous. He shouldn't have said that without...
  7. Celiac can cause different symptoms in everyone. Did they check her vitamin levels: irons, b's, d's, etc.? If she was deficient is she supplementing? Does she have symptoms when she is glutened like diarrhea, constipation, etc.? Bloating? Has she been tested to see if her gluten antibodies are falling? Some people report belly bloat with Celiac...
  8. Ok, I admit to taking time off from reading about celiac disease. I needed to. But now I'm reading again, and I don't know if it's me looking at this with new eyes or if this is a newer phenomena, but it seems like lately I'm seeing articles and research drifting towards segregating out types of gluten intolerances??? Also, it seems I'm reading recent...
  9. I use Mission white corn tortillas, marked gluten-free on the back. No problem. I use Tostitos restaurant (white corn) chips and Tostitos organic blue corn chips, both marked gluten-free. I also buy another brand of blue corn tortilla chips, but can't remember the name, but it is marked gluten-free. I have had good luck with corn tortillas and chips...
  10. I wouldn't say all "made in the same facility" foods are equal. I know I eat foods processed onthe same equipment (because it's so common and I only screen out the obvious) - but don't react to all of them. So, I'd venture to say THOSE chips are out. Other foods from other manufacturers MAY be ok. Or not. Do what makes you feel safe and...
  11. I've read this thread and must say i feel terrible for you and your daughter. You are trying everything you can at this point. Keep it up. One suggestion, if you haven't already started this, is to not wipe her bottom but to rinse it with cool water. Also, if you can get them, try having her wear some cotton cloth diapers called prefolds around the house...
  12. What did they give you for the staph infection and what are your relapse symptoms? Did they give you antibiotics? Are you having GI issues? Are you taking probiotics? Digestive enzymes?
  13. Oh gawd, I first tried Ener-G bread after my son was born when looking for dairy and soy free bread. When I saw that in the gluten-free aisle I freaked and I swear I had labor pains!!! That stuff is frightening. Though some say they do have a few good ones...I've yet to taste test it again though.
  14. Don't beat yourself up over a handful of chocolate chips. Seriously. Acclimating to the gluten-free diet is harrowing and a crutch is much needed, IMO. The hard part is accepting, at least for a while, that your body is a runaway freight train and you are merely along for the ride. Sure, you can do the obvious right things (and you should) but don't expect...
  15. Honestly, I doubt they'll ever do what is necessary to live safely and courteously with a Celiac. Of course, I could be absolutely wrong-but thinking back to my college days-people were either on the clean wagon or off, and if they aren't on I sincerely doubt they'll start now. I'd just suck it up and do whats necessary to keep myself safe. Some days that...
  16. That's all good news. Uhm, fair warning on the steroids - they can make her aggressively nuts. As in The Cat From Hell that you're afraid to sleep around. I advise trying her new improved diet a bit longer, perhaps a gentle bath (gentle for her, bloody for you) and some oil on the itchy spots (if that's what she has).
  17. In my experience (and everyone is different) I swelled up (water) off and in the first 6 months of gluten-free. I was dealing with recovering from steroids as well as Hashis - which may or may not have been a part of it...but I did notice a few times bloating up after gluten exposure, which was very difficult for me to determine newly gluten-free. And...
  18. I agree. I don't say a word about my diet to anyone - gluten-free or not, other than "I'm gluten-free". Yeah, I'm grain- light. But if I say anything like that to someone, next thing i know, that person will catch me eating a bag of Tostitos and think I'm "cheating". So I just eat what works and don't label it. So have a beer and gluten-free pizza...
  19. If you buy whole chickens and don't use the giblets too often...just boil them and dice them up and give her little bits as treats. Mine loved that. You can also buy a pint of chicken livers and bake them on lllloooowww (basically dehydrate) and freeze those and portion them out. Be prepared to share with dog (and start WWIII).
  20. Only a problem for YOU. She's perfectly fine with it.
  21. Sounds like the way lots of people get "catted". It is definitely good you have her inside since she's declawed. Sounds like she's adjusting well. Best of luck to all of you!
  22. I assume they checked vitamin levels, too like iron (complete panel), b's, d3? Did they screen him for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (not just TSH but for antibodies)? Have you tried eliminating dairy or other common allergy groups to see if he has another food issue in conjunction with Celiac? Some people seem to get worse before better. I know it's...
  23. I thought TJ's chocolate chips were marked as processed in a wheat sharing facility...anyway, I've been avoiding them since going gluten-free. I thought I did it for a reason. Perhaps I'm mistaken on the labeling or it has changed? Before gluten-free I thought they upset my stomach a few times, I thought perhaps the strength of the cocoa? Honestly,...
  24. Lessons from my cat: Consider yourself owned. Give it whatever it wants. Sometimes they like you, sometimes they try to kill you. But you always, always do what they want when they want it (or just before - developing psychic cat skills is preferable). Yes, I loved my cat. Yes, I'm a cat sucker. I'm also a dog sucker but cats obviously see this affliction...
