ARCHIVED Gluten-free diets gain fans, concern others - Boston Globe
pricklypear1971 replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I sure wish these nutrition experts and MD's who comment on a Celiac diet would make two things clear. 1) the SAD would be low in most of those things the gluten-free SAD is low in if glutenous products weren't fortified. 2) a whole foods gluten-free diet is not unhealthy, and is (generally) healthier than the SAD. Really, how many people who have a gluten... -
ARCHIVED Researching And Trying To Connect The Dots
pricklypear1971 replied to Danny66's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So he ordered a Celiac panel? Are you staying on gluten or going off? Sooner is better since antibodies start falling. Hopefully you're getting a full thyroid panel, too. Had mine drawn Friday - 20+ tests/7 vials. This time looking at some new thyroid stuff. Hopefully something is obvious. Celiac is easy compared to Hashis. Sigh. Then went and... -
ARCHIVED Researching And Trying To Connect The Dots
pricklypear1971 replied to Danny66's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I found, that when I hit a certain point (stress, The Damn Rash) I literally just broke down mentally and physically. They feed each other. At that point, you just have to become resolute, decide to work on finding the cause and doing what needs to be done to fix it. You CAN figure this out. How did your doctor appt. go? -
ARCHIVED Constant Nausea
pricklypear1971 replied to flowerqueen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some people set an alarm to check glucose around 3 a.m. If you can add beans or leafy veggies it helps with fiber and glucose regulation, for most. -
ARCHIVED Constant Nausea
pricklypear1971 replied to flowerqueen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Could be hormones fluctuating, or your hernia on an empty stomach, or blood sugar in combo with all of that. Is there a chance your blood sugar is dipping too low in the middle of the night? -
ARCHIVED Vitamins Not Digesting
pricklypear1971 replied to Newbee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you do indeed have a thyroid problem, and it is Hashimoto's Disease, there's strong evidence to support NOT taking iodine. Not all hypothyroidism is the same. Edit:sorry, should have replied to the original post. -
ARCHIVED My Little Girl Possibly Celiac/gluten Intolerant
pricklypear1971 replied to BettyinMD's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
And IMO pictures or visual inspection of gluten rashes are pointless. It's really how they act that defines it, and a biopsy if you can get it. But post them anyway, I'm sure plenty of people will say its DH and plenty won't. Don't mean to sound sarcastic or defeatist but that's just how it goes with gluten and rashes. IMO, if eating gluten gives you... -
ARCHIVED My Little Girl Possibly Celiac/gluten Intolerant
pricklypear1971 replied to BettyinMD's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Dig through the University of Chicago Celiac Center site. In one of those fact sheets or a free ebook they talk about how much gluten is needed. From memory, the more the better with kids. -
ARCHIVED My Little Girl Possibly Celiac/gluten Intolerant
pricklypear1971 replied to BettyinMD's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
List of tests: Open Original Shared Link Keep her on gluten til your appointment, you may have to find a new doctor if this one won't test. If the doctor refuses to test her, find a new one. You may consider a dermatologist for a biopsy for Dermatits herpetiformis - the skin form of celiac disease. Not all gluten induced rashes are DH but if you're... -
ARCHIVED My Father Was Just Diagnosed With Celiac...
pricklypear1971 replied to raininblack's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think you need to get your hands on your blood work and see if a full celiac panel was run. For thyroid, they need to test tsh plus free t3/4 levels, plus thyroid antibodies. Also, most doctor's use the lab "normal" range as normal when most thyroid specialists who treat thyroid issues favor it 2 and below. Get your lab results. You are young with... -
I didn't even think about cones. Frost has them on the menu but I don't think I've ever seen anyone WITH one... Hmmm...

The only place I eat ice cream (Gelato, actually) is Frost - because they know which flavors are gluten-free, take it seriously, and THEY KEEP THE SAME SCOOP IN ONE FLAVOR ALL DAY. I suggest having any ice cream parlor you choose to try use a clean (wash with soap and water) scoop and serve from a NEW container unless they also dedicate 1 scoop to each...

ARCHIVED Is It Possible To Get Dh In Genital Area?
pricklypear1971 replied to glutenmommy's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I had to really baby my DH. Before I knew what it was I sprayed an antifungal on it because it seemed to help. I think it helped because it had a numbing agent and it made it feel dry. The numbing part was great, but the dry part wasn't...it ended up making it worse - more irritated. My best luck was with Vanicream lotion as far as keeping the skin soft... -
ARCHIVED Deli Meat
pricklypear1971 replied to GottaSki's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I buy all of the above - Boar's Head (ask the deli to clean the slicer), Hormel Naturals and also Trader Joe's ham and turkey. I am getting to where I don't like the saltiness of deli turkey so i think I'm going to try roasting a breast once in a while. I expect ham to be salty, so I just eat less. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Dating?
pricklypear1971 replied to Gluten-Freed's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It might be beneficial to work in something about not being able to suck face with someone who has been eating gluten before the situation arises. Hate for a girl to get needlessly offended if you run away from her....or if you offer up another part for kissing... -

ARCHIVED 18M Old - With Genetics Against Her
pricklypear1971 replied to Aprilelayne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's great news! Be aware she didn't order a complete Celiac panel. If those don't come up + I'd request more tests and/or endoscopy. Tests: Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED When Is It Too Late To Test For DH?
pricklypear1971 replied to ErinIsabel's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I honestly don't know. Could be just staph, could be DH, could be both. Having been a victim of postpartum rashes that I have no idea what the origin, I vote for aliens. -
ARCHIVED Going The Primal Route....
pricklypear1971 replied to LauraB0927's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Funny enough, while I make no claims to primal/paleo I eat few grains (except when I hit the Tostitos crack)...I've found I highly prefer baking (when I do it anymore) with coconut flour and almond flour. Or no flour (chocolate needs no help). My main grain consumption was in sweets...and now that I've changed those...I rarely eat grains. And I don... -

It isn't a culture, it's a punch biopsy. You'll get a stitch. -
ARCHIVED When Is It Too Late To Test For DH?
pricklypear1971 replied to ErinIsabel's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I'm not a doctor but I'd assume they could find staph in a DH rash. You should really ask your doctor. Let's put it this way, if I were in your position and they wanted me to take another round of antibiotics, I'd ask for a DH biopsy first unless they could explain why I still would need them if it was DH (meaning the staph was enough of an issue and it could... -
ARCHIVED When Is It Too Late To Test For DH?
pricklypear1971 replied to ErinIsabel's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
The biopsy comes from next to a lesion, on unaffected skin. Theoretically, a fresh lesion is best but your biggest problem will be that you're gluten-free for apx 3 months. The biopsy tests for antibodies, and they fall just like blood biopsies. If it makes the difference between another round of antibiotics I'd try it. Most DH biopsies come back inconclusive... -
ARCHIVED Alcohol
pricklypear1971 replied to jenhunter's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know of a mainstream soda that has gluten in it. Maybe a boutique soda. Coke and Dr. Pepper are fine, I drink those on occasion. I suggested the seltzer because some people don't or can't have traditional sodas for other reasons.
