  1. It stands for Anti-Endomysial Antibodies (EMA) I personally never understood why it isn't AEA ha ha! My daughter's pediatrician did not run the EMA because the lab that they always used did not do that one. The GI doctor sent it to an out of state lab to run. I had her scoped and honestly, I am glad I did. They found ulcers and an esphagus problem caused...
  2. I had mine scoped after a positive blood test because I was in denial myself. However, my 2nd child will be retested next month. If she is positive, we will not scope. Did she have the EMA antibody come back positive? That one is like 99% right if positive. Question to the poster above: My daughers EMA test only showed "Positive"...they didn't give...
  3. I believe the Taco Bell brand kits are NOT gluten free. But I buy Ortega and they are. I like corn pasta better than the rice pasta. It seems to not get as mushy.
  4. also...on Fox News this morning, they were saying there was a rise in Type 1 diabetes in children and they think it is from all the antibacterial stuff we are using today. We are keeping too clean. I had to wonder if it is the wheat crop that they have messed with.
  5. I had a fear mongering doctor with my daughter. I switched. He mentioned everything in the sun that could go wrong. Honestly, I think they say that stuff so you won't just say "I'll go gluten free without the biospy". If you do that, they lose $$$$$$. Is there not some sort of blood test that would show lymphoma? (I have no idea) My husband is type 1...
  6. My youngest had a biopsy for just random stomach aches. They didn't find anything. Fast forward 9 months and her big sister was diagnosed with celiac (biospy and blood). The doctor literally opened the door still sitting on his stool, and yelled for youngest chart. He looked at me with all honesty and said, "I did not take enough biospies to completely...
  7. My daughter went from 50% down to 21% when they discovered her thryoid issue. Most people think weight when they think of thyroid but in kids, it is the height. But within 3 years, she was back up to 50%. The doctor called it "catch up growth" and I was skeptical but it worked. If your daughter has always been small, then she may just be small. The...
  8. You'd think so but many are not. Read the label on a lot of "name brand" corn meal and it will not be safe (wheat). I have found that store brands often are just fine. So that's what I buy.
  9. I have a child who was diagnosed by "mild blunting" only. The doctor seemed very pleased that we/he had caught it early. Someone told me that you can send her slides somewhere else for a free second opinion. (They have to keep those slides for a long, long time) Maybe it was the University of Chicago Celiac Center. They have a hotline you can call for...
  10. My daughters was only in the duadenal bulb. All other biopsies showed normal. I wonder how many biopsies were taken and from where.
  11. I found a library book today for my daughter about having celiac as a preteen. I read it first. It was very accurate and informative. BUT...they said something in there that I have never thought of and I wanted to pass it along. You seasoned celiacs may already know this trick. When a restaurant makes a mistake and brings you a salad with croutons....dump...
  12. My 11 year old wants to go to a day horse camp. It's from 9-3. Since she was diagnosed, I haven't really had to think about camp before. DUMB QUESTION: Is hay ok for her to be around? Is gluten in hay form ok?
  13. I was told the average doctor spent 15 minutes on it in medical school. This was told my a nutitrionist who had celiac. A doctor flat out told her that it was barely covered. It was rare. She has made it her mission to educate them! I have been lucky since it was my dd with celiac. It seems that pediatric GIs are more up to date on that stuff. Or maybe...
  14. We eat out once a week. However, my DH just informed me on how much we spent on eating out and add that on top of gluten free eating....it was just too much. I need to cut it out. Sorry...off track. We go to the same places. We go mainly to Red Robin or Wendys. She eats chili and a baked potato at Wendys. Also, Chick Filet has a gluten free kids...
  15. You asked about people with no symptoms having the tests. I have to go back next month and have my daughter's blood work retested and she doesn't have any symptoms. They want to make sure her Ttg level has gone down. Maybe that will prove to them that the diet is working? Or that I am being compliant? I am not sure myself but we are going back. I read...

If you have a smart phone, there is an app for that. : ) Find me Gluten Free is what I have. You can click "around me" and it uses your GPS to find them. It will usually be the reg. chain restaurants with a gluten free menu. But it has come in handy when I didn't know what was around me. I can't remember if it was free or not. If not, they might have...
  17. Thanks- There were lots of gluten-free recipes. I have one question? When a "reg. recipe" calls for flour. Can you just substitute the all purpose gluten free flour cup for cup or do I add something else?
  18. (and just in case your jaw pain comes back...it might be TMJ) My husband and my MIL have it. They sell this mouthguard at Walgreens that keep you from clinching your teeth at night. You may not know you are doing it but when you are stressed it gets worse! Anyway, it has helped him. My MIL had $10K worth of work to fix hers. Glad you are doing better...
  19. My grandmother is turning 88 this month. My mom is planning on throwing her a suprise luau. Since my dd is gluten free, she wants the whole meal to be gluten free. Anyone have an luau recipes? (esp. any breads) There will be about 15 people there. Thanks!
  20. I am going to give you permission to whine. I have an 11 yr old celiac. I have vented here only to be told that I needed to get into counceling. But I don't. I just need to be heard. It is hard to take a child's food everywhere. It is even harder to deal with the emotions that come with them feeling different. I don't tell my child to grow up or suck...
  21. That doesn't sound good. It sounds like lymphnodes to me. I have always heard if you have swollen lymph nodes and night sweats to get to the doctor ASAP. I don't mean to scare you but I hope you get it checked out.
  22. I was scared it was going to be a passing phase..finding gluten free food in the store. But, my SIL's nephew has autism and has been told to go gluten free. Considering how high the autism rate is, it wouldn't suprise me if they find out it is caused by what we are doing to our food in America! When everything (practically) gets better when gluten free...
  23. You can do it! If you have a Publix near you, right now (at least in our area) they have gluten free Progresso Soups for 4 for $6. When you walk in the door, they have hanging coupons. There is a $1 off of one. So you will get them for about .50 this week. (Chicken Enchilada is yummy with corn chips) They also have B1G1 free gluten free Rice Krispies...
  24. How do you get it off the bowls without breaking? Will it just lift off? Do you spray PAM on it? That would be neat and I wouldn't have to run out and buy balloons. The kids saw the blog and the cute pictures and now thing they need it. : )
  25. Found the coolest recipe for kids (ok, adults, too). You take a microwaveable bowl and put in the chocolate bricks or disks. (Usually found with fruit or the baking aisle) Melt it and make it a few inches deep. Take a small washed balloon. The author said that water balloons worked for her. Blow it up and roll it around in the bowl covering the bottom...
