    ARCHIVED Family

I cook gluten free dinners for everyone but my husband eats gluten for breakfast (Nutrigrains or something) and then he can eat out for lunch if he wants bread. Only one daughter is 100% gluten free. The rest of us are not. I do have 2 toasters though. My nutritionist (who also has celiac herself!) told me that hot water and soap will remove gluten and...
  2. I ordered the gluten free meal plan from www.emeals.com It gives you recipes and the shopping list for 7 complete dinners...sides included. I save tons using those and not just going to the grocery blind. Breakfast...yougart, fruit, cinnamon chex, eggs, gluten-free toast. Lunch- chili (check for gluten-free...Vietti is gluten-free)and Fritos, or refried...
  3. Strange memory request. Every single Olympics since my 11 year old has been born, we have eaten soft pretzels and watched them. I don't even buy those any other time throughout the year. I really don't know how it started 8 years ago. We even do it on Winter Olympics. This year, wham....celiac. She has already mentioned we have to do it again this...
  4. Do we have an update yet on this? Just wondered how he was doing and if he was scoped yet. After my daughter was scoped and found to be celiac, then blood was enough for the other family members. I have a high out of pocket min. and can't see paying $2400 to scope my youngest when she has a sister with it, genes for it, and her blood is high for it. (We...
  5. On his height....have the ped. look at his curve. Has it gone down? I have some friends with very short kids and short parents. They say that the kids are fine because they have always been on the low curve. No change. However, my child was 50% for 6 years then dropped to 21%. Turns out to be low thyroid. (celiac 4 years later) They go together, too...
  6. My daughter has no symptoms. That doesn't mean they couldn't start but she doesn't have any right now.
  7. My daughters scope looked normal, too but came back "simplification". That is the start of blunting. You don't go from having great villi to none overnight yet some doctors will not say celiacs until total villi destruction. Not my GI. He said to start gluten free immediately that she had celiac. But she also had positive genes, positive blood, etc....
  8. Sometimes it takes a doctor to tell your husband it is serious. I had that with some post pardum depression (my grandfather died 3 hours after my baby was born) My husband didn't grasp the severity of it. The doctor had to look him in the face and say "Just like you have diabetes, she has THIS." End of story. He totally got it. I guess it takes a Medical...
  9. I know this is the dumbest question on earth probably but I don't know the answer. My DH made our daughters some cinnamon toast for breakfast. He was doing this while I slept so that was nice! One daughter is celiac but the other has to be on gluten because they are doing another blood test next month. (she was showing signs) So he lined the baking sheet...
  10. Thank you 1974girl, for your perspective! You are totally welcome! Since the original post, my father's 1,000 PVCs a day have totally gone away after he stopped drinking caffeinated drinks (coffee was the #1 for him).
  11. My daughter had the same thing! On their way down for the biopsy they found EE. Her back test showed all beans, peas, rice, pork, mustard, cantaloupe, tree nuts, and apples. I have no idea if she is really allergic to any of that. My friend's son showed nothing on the back prick. I had 2 doctors tell me 2 different things. 1) flovent and food trials...
  12. I also wanted to add to make sure your thyroid levels are normal. They go hand in hand with celiac. My dd has low thyroid and celiac.
  13. Girlfriend....you are the same one with advice for me when I was sad my 11 year was feeling left out and different. Don't tell me you aren't strong. You said you didn't get our weird attachment to food. Just remember that when you have kids. HA HA! I am married to a type 1 diabetic. We had 2 kids with celiac genes. We have been tested and neither of...
  14. Hey Roda! I was at Dollywood yesterday, too! Let me tell you about the most awesome celiac dining experience we have had so far in our 5 months since diagnosis. Yes..it was at a theme park. In Dollywood is the Backstage Restaurant. They were listed on their website as having gluten-free-choices. So we found it after trying to figure out the map(near...
  15. So today Domino's unveiled their new gluten-free crust. So I called our manager and it is there! BUT...they use the same ovens and the same screens to bake them on. So really, they said it was more for people who have gluten-free sensitivity. : ( Another place in my town uses a totally different oven, utensils, and containers of cheese. They have it...
  16. I have a corporate retail background and we charged vendors for everything! (They pay out the wazoo to be in a flyer and even more for the front or back page) I have a feeling that the food manufacturer has to pay extra for those labels to go there. They are wanting to target the gluten free customer. It isn't on some items but it is on others leading...
  17. I should have been more clear. No, the doctor does not suspect type 1 diabetes. They just asked if I wanted to enroll her in a clinical trial to try to prevent it since her father has it. It would be taking oral insulin every day and nothing guaranteed if she showed the antibodies. Yet, they told me that there are kids who have the antibodies who never...
  18. I don't feel that it is a rediculous attachment to food. There are food "memories". Jesus even said "I am the bread of life" because their life revolved around bread at that time and they would relate! It's grandma's biscuits and sitting around eating pancakes after sleepovers. It is birthday cupcakes from a bakery and sharing a family meal at the local...
  19. So I have read that 98% of celiacs go undiagnosed. Then, I got an email from celiac.com in the last few weeks (I think it was them) saying that a new study shows that undiagnosed people live as long as the diagnosed ones. (I think an older study says different though) The only exception was adolescents. It said that the death rate was HIGHER for the diagnosed...
  20. that is so strange. My daughter had the exact same thing and yet they diagnosed her with celiac. She only had "simplification" of the villi and it was only in her duodual bulb. But because of her high Ttg and positive EMA, they said it was. Did you have the anti-endomysial antibody test (EMA)? It would say "positive or negative". From what I hear, it...
  21. Ya know...I may have misunderstood her. I was in a different city for the scoping. The doctor came out and immediatly told me to see the nutritionist down the hall before I drove back the 4 hours to home. This nutritionist had celiac so he wanted us to see her specifically. My daughter was still asleep when they set up the appointment. I was sitting...
  22. You are very sweet and thoughtful. Your roommate is lucky to have you! I only have one daughter who is gluten free. We are not a gluten free house because well, it is too expensive to be gluten free. We have our cheap bread and she has her expensive bread. We do have seperate toasters though! I have 2 bins in the cabinet labeled with my kids names for...
  23. What do you guys do? I have read such mixed opinions about it. I just ate the best Nature's Valley Granola Bar and realized it was gluten free if she could have the oats. Do you guys eat them? My nutricionist told me that we could eat them if they were organic. Is there really that much cross contamination? I have read here that some of you can eat...
  24. I have no idea on what to tell you about your cherry cake. I still am just buying Betty Crocker mixes since our diagnosis in December. LOL But, I have one turning 9 on Saturday. My MIL is making a gluten free strawberry cake with cream cheese icing. The funny thing is that my daughter asked for half lime green icing and half pink. So we are having a...
  25. My first year out of college, I landed a great job and had to go have dinner with one of our Chinese suppliers. My boss had already told me to make sure I ordered a big plate or I'd offend them. I guess being young and stupid and thinking that I was NOT in China and he was HERE, that I could do what I wanted. I was full from the airplane food and couldn...
