  1. While not particularly effective at peak hours of the day, my grammy puts a pinch of fresh citronella in her bonnet when she gardens and swears by it. She says she never has a problem with bugs while she's out. Due to the severity of the health risks involved with bites and the fact that she has battled lyme in the past and my family watched me nearly die...
  2. I personally wouldn't eat them because of how they were packaged. I imagine that it's only those particular ones as other Jelly Belly's don't have that warning. Sad, I've never looked at the package there but it's depressing to know.
  3. It's the same as peanut butter, or all the stuff made out of sesame seeds and all that (no seeds for me either) only made out of coconuts. I actually had a heck of a time finding a store here that had it, but yes it was one of the health food stores. You can also get it online. It is pricey, but oooooooh so good. It makes awessome coconut butter and jelly...
  4. I'm off nuts but I'll bet those are killer awesome with coconut butter. I know what I'm doing with my Sunday afternoon!
  5. omg I know! In my Grammy's house it was the normal practice to have a bowl of cereal before bed. This took care of all of the hungrys, thirstys, etc and got people off without a hitch. I may have only spent a night a week there but to this day I always snack before bed and it is commonly cereal. If I go to bed without a snack I'll wake up with my stomach...
  6. Haha, I always warn my husband. If he wants to stay happily married we need to spend a day or two a month not speaking to each other. Anyway, the pulled pork isn't really a recipe, it's more of a guideline. You need whatever pork roast makes you happy, I tend to buy whatever is cheapest, and some root beer and some BBQ sauce. The root beer is important...
  7. I can't blame gluten for my problems IH but I am totally feeling your pain. (((hugs))) I'm resenting being a girl today and frankly there is just no way in hell I'm cooking. I threw some buffalo chicken dip together into my baby crock pot and frankly if hubby doesn't like it he can figure out his own dinner. I've never made it before but I know I'll love...
  8. Out of curiosity, you say the pharmacist wasn't being helpful or giving you options, were you relying on the pharmacist for your information about if the medication was gluten free or not? Unless you are using a small private pharmacy with a friendly, helpful and knowledgeable pharmacist this should never be the case. Before you give a pharmacy your prescription...
  9. Whenever possible I call everyone. If I can't source something I'll find something I can source. I have 3 grocery stores in town that sell in bulk so I have the luxury of being able to say to one, well if you can't get me that information so-and-so can. Some companies are small local companies that mill and package their own flours. Some are large companies...
  10. I can hardly pass up the opportunity to share my opinion!! 1: I wouldn't require that any of those things specifically list that they be gluten free. After all, there are no particular laws pertaining to the gluten free label on foods and since they are all naturally gluten free foods they could say that on 3 different packages and one could be certified...
  11. My stupid useless gallbladder is the only reason I know I have celiac. It's a long story, but between the underhanded betrayal by my gallbladder and the backstabbing of my insurance I found myself having emergency surgery one day and and endoscopy the next and home cooking a Christmas ham and opening presents high as a kite the next... and here I am! I'm...
  12. Oh good, I thought you were going for a celiac biopsy. Hopefully you'll get whatever answers you need. Insurance companies are such a nightmare and there are so many incompetent doctors that I think a lot of us here worry about both taking advantage of unsuspecting patients.
  13. Have some Chloraseptic sore throat spray at home. I didn't have a scheduled endoscopy and it happened with a surgery but I know the sore throat was from that tube pokin around in there. Other than that I think every ill effect I suffered was from other stuff I had going on. Out of curiosity seeing your other posts, you're already gluten free? That...
  14. It was a complete fluke that I was even tested for celiac. I'm not sure I would have accepted it if it didn't just happen while I was out like a light. It happens to be one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I don't feel amazing exactly, but compared to a year ago I feel great. I have enough energy to leave my house a few days a week...
  15. I didn't think of this until I was out of the house last night and just had to go out for fries and a shake, but In-N-Out has safe fries. Since all they serve is fries, burgers and drinks there isn't any risk of other junk in the fryer and their just like fair fries which I love! Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to have an In-N-Out near them. Just...
  16. I can't trust the people (or person now) I live with. My husband I trust 100%, my MIL I can't trust at all. For this reason I share literally nothing in the house. She will get out a spoon or fork and leave the silverware drawer just a little bit open which then leads to a drawer full of crumbs. I was still getting sick all the time and couldn't figure out...
  17. Nausea has also been one of my most severe symptoms. I find that it is far worse when I don't sleep enough or sleep well, which sucks since I have intermittent insomnia. After 8 months, like you I find that it has dramatically improved but not gone away. There are a few things I do for it that help. The first is to always keep diet ginger ale on hand...
  18. I also grew up eating cornmeal mush for breakfast at my Grammy's house. Same thing without messing around with a complicated pot. I'm not really sure how or even if that changes anything about the texture of it. I don't really see how it could.
  19. Pork loin, mac & cheese and I'm sure I'll think of a veggie to add by the time it's time to throw one on the stove. My doctor told me as long as I'm staying symptom free I'm allowed a little of my tyramine foods so I'm having my mac & cheese with cheddar today yay!
  20. I'm all for arming people with knowledge. Lets face it, a lot of us have had dealings with doctors who aren't equipped to arm patients with knowledge. On top of that, they send patients home to navigate this tough road and then they see all these moronic celebrities on TV and then don't take their own disease seriously. I suppose I'm scared because I went...
  21. I agree that it's possible he is trying to impress upon you the seriousness of this disease. Of course the possibility also exists that he's an idiot, although I doubt it since he insist on not waiting on biopsy testing, and not insisting on continuing on eating a diet that is making you sick to do a biopsy that doesn't seem necessary. There are many...
  22. No self respecting farmer would bale the heads of wheat into straw or hay. It would simply be too expensive. Even if it were grass hay or straw though, there is no guarantee that if it has been rotated into last years wheat fields or something that there isn't traces of gluten in it or something. I actually keep a bale of hay in my living room without any...
  23. A note about bread. If you try gluten free bread and decide it sucks, don't have any for like 3 or 6 months and try again. While I didn't think it sucked, I was unimpressed with it. After not having any sort of bread for several months, when I finally had some again last week it was like mana from heaven. I prefer Rudi's to Udi's but apparently it isn't available...
  24. Vicks Nature Fusion. It says on the website and box that it is gluten free. My hubby has been feeling kind of sick and since yesterday was the weekend I was in a mad scramble to find something that said on the internet from a reputable source that it was safe. I don't usually use cough drops, or haven't really recently that I recall. I believe when I...
  25. My guess nvsmom with that fish would actually be the cedar plank. If the restaurant also prepared gluten contained things on the cedar it would be all sorts of gluteny. No matter how much you scrub and how much you clean, there is no getting the gluten out of wood. Of course, this is all just me guessing also. It could very well have been something else entirely...
