So, apparently I am the world's most evil wife. When we go to the movies we always go to the store and pick up two boxes of candy and two sodas. I can't have pretty much anything at the theater, I can't have the popcorn because the butter sauce has soy. I can't have chocolate. Half the candy that isn't chocolate either has wheat in it or has a manufactured...

ARCHIVED Primal/paleo But No Nuts?
Adalaide replied to Celiac Mindwarp's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Due to an additional condition I was diagnosed with after celiac I am seed and nut free. I'm actually tyramine free but these are both included. Additionally I'm soy free so at first I spent the first few days convinced I would starve to death. First, an easy and no sacrifice option. If it doesn't matter what you eat you could keep Kind bars or Larabars... -
I wasn't sure what to say, but I guess I can tell you what it is like for me after consuming gluten accidentally. First, there is the GI symptoms that last for a few hours. Not so bad to be perfectly honest, but it is exhausting. Then, I'll really and truly be exhausted. I will sleep for more than half a day, usually more like 20 hours a day for about half...

ARCHIVED Bobs Red Mill gluten-free All Purpose Flour - Any Good ?
Adalaide replied to Bansaw's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
There are a handful of things from Bob's that I love. Recently I finally picked up my first package of all purpose flour. I used it to make a pie crust and to be honest it didn't work nearly as well as it has in the past when I've simply used rice flour. It also tasted like crap. I wouldn't feed it to a dog. I'm not sure if it's something I could use to thicken... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We had company for dinner and after some much appreciated and needed advice we decided to skip offering our company rolls. We toasted enough Rudi's for everyone to have a slice if they liked with dinner. Dinner was a lovely spiral cut ham with a brown sugar dijon glaze, baked potatoes (I was too lazy for mashed), glazed carrots, salad and killer gravy... -
ARCHIVED Entertaining With Gluten
Adalaide replied to Adalaide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I tried making Chebe rolls once. The end result was not edible. I did everything exactly like the directions say! White. Whale. -
ARCHIVED Entertaining With Gluten
Adalaide replied to Adalaide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had a few bread failures in baking so far but no successes. I've had wild success with cakes, cookies, brownies all all that but bread eludes me. This will be my white whale since I made the most amazing breads that had people raving before going gluten free. They do have children, who are invited. I wouldn't ask them to try to find a babysitter for... -
Just before my psuedotumor cerebri diagnosis my husband and I had purchased a large ham and shoved it in our freezer. Well, I'm not really supposed to eat ham any more so to solve this problem we're entertaining this evening. I grew up more or less in my grammy's kitchen and absolutely love cooking for people.. so oh woe is me! Hah! Well, my husband...

ARCHIVED What's Your Go To Recipe
Adalaide replied to 1974girl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My go to is actually to send my husband to Costco for a chicken. Hahaha! In a true emergency where neither of us want to leave the house I'll usually just throw together some pasta, sauce and frozen meatballs. I use the Farmrich ones which are gluten free because I'm far too lazy to make my own. -
ARCHIVED Grass Fed Or Grain Fed-How Do You Find Out?
Adalaide replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I stepped on a snake in my bear feet in our daffodil patch. To this day I still have panic attacks from snakes. Even a picture online is enough to get my blood pressure up and my heart racing. Rubber snake at the toy store? Panic attack and assurances from friends that no one needs to call 911. I can't even imagine the trauma of being bitten... in the eye... -
ARCHIVED Grass Fed Or Grain Fed-How Do You Find Out?
Adalaide replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Isn't that the coolest ever mamaw? You can pick your own cow. If you buy from a farm directly and have room in your deep freeze for a whole cow, or want to split a cow with a friend or neighbor or something, you can just go pick out your living cow to eat. It isn't for everyone to see the living animal and know it will be slaughtered, at your request, for... -
ARCHIVED Grass Fed Or Grain Fed-How Do You Find Out?
Adalaide replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This makes me want to cry. Or scream. Or throttle a farmer. No cow should ever be treated this way. This is, in my experience, the exception rather than the rule though. While I do make grocery store purchases I do agree that if you can locate a local farm or butcher even who can source your meat you will get something far tastier. The farm I grew up... -
ARCHIVED How To Pronounce Celiac
Adalaide replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could try "AAAARRRR!!" so you're more pirate-ish. Then we could all start wearing eye patches and up our cool factor by like... 10! -
ARCHIVED Grass Fed Or Grain Fed-How Do You Find Out?
Adalaide replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I grew up on a cattle farm and people are completely up in arms about this, when not all farms and ranches use them unnecessarily. At any rate, grass vs. grain finished has nothing to do with hormones and antibiotics. Unless labeled as being "natural" or "organic" both grass and grain finished beef are given (or potentially giving depending on the farm/ranch... -
ARCHIVED Grass Fed Or Grain Fed-How Do You Find Out?
Adalaide replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Because of the cost of finishing cows on grass, yes they are significantly more expensive and it will always say it on the package. Loudly and proudly. If you aren't seeing a small area in the meat section of your store dedicated to grass finished beef, it isn't selling it. You can ask if they can get it, but if they are ordering it just for you it is possible... -
I'm spoiled with fairs. I grew up going to one that was actually in my town that is huge. You can, and many people do get lost in the fair every year. You can go for a whole day and not see everykthing. I'm used to a rather large fair. Now, the Utah State Fair was fun don't get me wrong but I expected enough stuff to be more than I could reasonably see in...

Psh, who cares if you're off key! The awesome thing about a concert is you can sing along and no one can hear you. The crowd was having a little trouble perking up but like seriously two notes into Run-Around and everyone was crazy wild excited. They also did Hook, which is by far my favorite. I was like... 100 feet from John Popper. OMG!!! I don't know how...

I'd like to try Malawi's Pizza in Provo but like any pizza place I'm wary. I've eating at Pier 49 and not gotten sick so I know they're safe, but I've heard that Malawi's crust is so much better. I'm curious to know if anyone has tried them and liked them. They are buttloads cheaper than Pier 49. My husband is doing his gluten challenge soon and I don't want...

ARCHIVED Allergic Reaction To Gluten After Going Gluten Free
Adalaide replied to jerseylinda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll start by explaining the Lay's thing because I've contacted the company. If you view their website they'll have two types of "gluten free" products. Those they list as having no gluten containing ingredients and those that are gluten free. The ones you ate simply have no gluten containing ingredients. The ones they offer that are gluten free are run on... -
For me the most frustrating thing is being so exhausted so much. At it's worst I was sleeping as much as 20 hours a day, most days of the week. While the exhaustion is largely physical I'd be too weak to even hold open a book and would fall asleep because I was so bored. I'm glad this isn't as bad as it used to be and I find that most days I'm able to get...

ARCHIVED Celiac, Sex, And Pancreas
Adalaide replied to Making-A-Change's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The only thing to be worried about with him causing you problems is where gluten has touched him. He needs to be washing his hands and brushing his teeth before you are intimate. I know it may seem like a mood killer to him but there is nothing quite like running to the bathroom to um.... yeah.... to kill the mood. Totally unrelated to gluten, I do have an... -
ARCHIVED Qestion For Moms & Pet Owners
Adalaide replied to cap6's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I babysit my cousin who is about 18 months old. While he eats whatever he wants at home, he eats gluten free in my house. I don't do face kisses and am sure to wash his hands after he gets here but other than that don't worry too much about it. On the other hand, I handle other children very differently. In church most toddlers and preschool age children... -
ARCHIVED Friend With Possible Celiac?
Adalaide replied to techyie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think a few different things are possible. First, there are many people who have celiac and don't take their disease seriously at first then realize that they need to and knock off the crap. Symptoms can vary widely from literally none at all to bedridden for weeks at a time from a single seemingly minor accident with our food. It is possible that she simply... -
ARCHIVED Whole Food Peanut Butter Cookies
Adalaide replied to bossley's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't think I'd recommend coconut butter for someone who isn't into coconuts. Imagine all the wondrous awesomeness of coconuts condensed and magnified. Okay, well that may be hard for you since you don't like them. But it tastes like coconuts... only coconuttier! At least I know that my husband will never go near it. If it were the last food on earth and... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I never heard of that called bannock tacos before. My girlfriend always called it Navajo tacos but I suppose maybe being Navajo gave her a bias? I wish I had taken her up on her offer of learning to make the bread sometime before she moved away, I still kick myself over that one. My caring husband shared his cold with me this weekend so he got to be...
