  1. Feeding a bunch of people desserts? I can't even imagine the cost! I hate the cost also. I love love love to bake. The two frustrating things are that I can't reasonably justify baking for people, and bread. I used to bake for a straight week before Christmas, just for gifts. I'd do 2 or 3 different types of cookies a day, every day for a few days. Then...
  2. I suffer from one very serious allergy as well as celiac. Frankly, after watching my grandmother fight what was most likely a celiac related cancer for 7 years before dying at 54 pounds with translucent skin I would much sooner die of an allergic reaction than to die of complications of celiac. You're right, it isn't funny. There is nothing funny about people...
  3. Maybe I've never met the right cats. Maybe I'm really just not a cat person. I had no idea how allergic I was until after we were married and my husband's cat got on my legs one night when they got out of the blankets. I got covered in hives where I was out and he was physically on me because I guess I was warm. It try not to hold it against him... but for...
  4. I couldn't resist the temptation of the rotisserie chickens at Costco yesterday afternoon. They were just getting them out when we were walking by so I had to have one. Tonight we'll eat the rest of it with potato wedges and gravy and some apple something. I have a few apples to do something with, I think something up. Maybe Bella is acting unimpressed...
  5. Not that I've had short hair since idk when, but I see no reason it wouldn't work. The point if you do enough reading and research is that you're focusing on washing your scalp, not your hair. A problem I could foresee, depending on what your plans are with your hair are the types of styling products you use. Some are made to coat your hair in a way that...
  6. I can't stand the whole one-up-man-ship thing with diseases and medical problems. "My problem is obviously so much worse than your problem because blah blah blah..." I completely agree with the sentiment that it must be nice to have an issue where you go out in a blaze instead of a slow smoldering burn that takes years or decades while your health and...
  7. Naturally you would remove the sign for family gatherings. It is only for attractive non-related company that you need it. I respectfully disagree about the hand washing. I wouldn't if the only person in the house with celiac was an adult. But since the people the concern is about are children too small to truly understand, and presumably the children...
  8. While those of us with celiac are at about 1% of the population, people with type 1 diabetes run straight up to a 10% chance. Open Original Shared Link The issues of malabsorption when you have both and celiac is undiagnosed can cause your diabetes to become quite difficult to manage with both unexplained highs and lows. Since it sounds like you are...
  9. Just Classico alfredo, nothing exciting there. The pasta was a rice, corn, quinoa blend. It was pretty good. I went and looked and I think it said $3.67 a pound which is pretty reasonable, it just wasn't in my current grocery budget. I have X amount of wiggle room I allow myself at Costco, and I used all my wiggle on flour. If I didn't have rules for shopping...
  10. I happened to be wandering up and down aisles at Costco today and found Premium Gold gluten free flour. It's an AP flour blend that I scored for about $13 for 5 pounds which I'm pretty excited about. There aren't many AP blends available in stores around here that aren't either mostly rice flour (blech) or Bob's (I can't do beans, and don't like the flavor...
  11. Here's the reason (with kids) you want people washing their hands right away, and why I did it to my toddler cousin when I babysat him. Toddlers are, to be blunt, cesspools of gluten. They even eat in the car. They show up on doorsteps, hands covered in poison. It doesn't seem unreasonable to ask that they make an attempt to wash the stuff off when they show...
  12. The two medications I have run into that for sure contained gluten were a gelcap, which would presumably run on different equipment than regular pills, and a prescription nausea medication that you let melt under your tongue. I don't remember what drug it was, but with the brand name and more than one generic I was specifically told they were not gluten free...
  13. If that's the recipe you would make, that probably officially makes it the best option. Always nice to have such an expert opinion.
  14. Well at least you can keep telling yourself that it's just one more winter. Get feeling better, I'm still trying to get rid of the last of the snottiness leftover from my cold. I hate how it lingers. We're trying to decide between breakfast for dinner and picking up a Costco rotisserie chicken since we'll be there anyway. I suppose we'll probably decide...
  15. Very few, if any manufacturers will come right out and say more than a CYA statement. It is nearly always "we don't use gluten but aren't making any promises" because just in case someone gets sick they don't want to get sued. It's just the way the industry works. With medications the cleaning practices that are in place are top-notch so the chances of CC...
  16. Someone had to open their fat mouth about the perfect fall weather. Guess who's supposed to get snow tonight? We're having do-overs, which is kind of like leftovers only... no, it's exactly the same thing. I found the ambition for arepas last night but ate the spares for breakfast so it's Udi's for my sandwich tonight. But that means I have zucchini...
  17. I was never much of a croissant person, but I found the recipe Abby shared and if I was going to make them it's the one I would use. It explains every step in great detail also so a first timer shouldn't have too much trouble. You would want to read through the entire recipe though before starting so you are sure of what you are getting in to and make sure...
  18. Pulled pork sandwiches tonight. I think I'm making some fried zucchini cakes to go with them. It'll leave me a little leftover so I can make fresh ones for breakfast in the morning. I've got some Udi's buns in the freezer so I won't have to make arepas if I don't feel like it. We'll see how that goes closer to dinner time. Nothing exciting happening in...
  19. I have to keep track of carbs for everything I cook because of my husband. There are two methods for this. The first is google. I just search "nutrition facts X" and I'll get whatever I need. The other is a book that was recommended to my niece when she was diagnosed with diabetes called CalorieKing Calorie, Fat and Carbohydrate Counter. It's really helpful...
  20. When I was at my sickest I could barely leave the house. As a matter of fact the only time I ever did leave the house was when I went to the doctor or pharmacy. It was rare for me to even go to the store with my husband any more. Life? What life? I lost every friend I ever had because I had no way to be a friend to them any more. And so, I found a new way...
  21. Just an idea. Something I do when I try a recipe for the first time and I'm not sure it'll turn out well, and it is what I would personally do here. Rather than 1/2 I would do 1/4 of the recipe. I always cut the recipe down to 1 egg. If you have a cookie scoop, you can also use it to perfectly portion the dough on a cookie sheet on parchment paper then...
  22. Kids do that a lot. They usually start at a young age too. My kids spent a lot of time with my mom when they were little, mostly because my mom couldn't get enough of them. Every time she would get them to her house they would immediately tell her they hadn't eaten, even though I always fed them before sending them anywhere. I've been being super lazy...
  23. I may have ended up resenting pie a little if that happened to me. As it is, my daughter and I both sort of resent Christmas wrapping paper. Having a birthday in December (her) or right after Christmas (me) is not an excuse not to have a dollar to spend on cheap wrapping paper at the dollar store. Snowman wrapping paper doesn't double as winter birthday paper...
  24. Who doesn't want a giraffe cookie cutter!?! Also, I probably used my old rolling pin at least 2-3 times a month and that's being pretty conservative. When I said I was a pretty serious baker, I wasn't kidding. And pies and cookies were at the top of my list. I wonder sometimes how it is I married someone who doesn't really care for pie. Maybe he's just not...
  25. I... see I have an admission to make. And I know this makes me a horrible person. It is entirely possible that in nearly two years I sort of, maybe, kind of haven't bought a new rolling pin. Other methods of rolling things out make me crazy and so I know I need one, but I keep needing other stuff more than pie or cookies I can cut out. I'm so embarrassed...
