  1. I was just in Publix and picked up their Garden Style Pasta Sauce, on sale for 59 CENTS a jar! I was thrilled to get such a good buy - and sure it would be on their Publix brand gluten-free list but when I looked it up - nope, no sauce at all. Back to the 2.50 a jar Newman's.
  2. He had a rare form of the disease, refractory sprue. It doesn't respond to a gluten free diet. The only medical treatment is long term corticosteroid use to control the imflammation, and unfortunatly that leads to brittle bones, short stature, weight gain, a round appearance to the face (called "moon face" by doctors - thanks Doc, thanks alot ) and a host...
  3. I've had painful cystic acne all my life too. I've never noticed a connection (worsening/clearing) with gluten but then I've only been on the diet since June 05. Antibiotics (oral, topical) did little or nothing for me till I tried Evoclin this year. It's a topical clindamycin foam. I've used topical clindamycin before, in those bingo-like dabbers, but...
  4. I agree. >ducks< But everyone has their own bag - prayer, herbs, oils, wildflowers, collecting Hummel figurines - if it works for you then there's your proof. Just be careful that's all - keep an open mind, just not so open your brain falls out. Here's an interesting article on the origins of the term "snake oil". Open Original Shared...
  5. Celiac and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis - diag. at 18 months and still active 36 years later. (75% of JA cases spontaneously go into remission.) My mother has celiac and vitiligo.
  6. I have a cookie gun and I'm not afraid to use it!
  7. Spelt Raid Here's an article on what the Feds think of "wheat free" spelt!
  8. Ah! Yes, all that pure cane sugar. I forgot. No wonder I love the stuff.
  9. I have a history of fainting/seizure, it isn't related to my celiac but it certainly could be aggravated by the dehydration. It took years to get a diagnosis. One elderly family doctor told me it was normal, "young girls faint. . .". I didn't have the heart to tell him young girls no longer wore corsets!
  10. Why not just make it with soy milk? Is the protein count that much higher in the powder?
  11. Is lithium all she's taking?? Lithium is for bipolar disorder, not PS.
  12. It's called borborygmus. I once had an "attack" in the middle of class. Everyone was reading quietly, total silence, when all of a sudden this noise came out of my abdomen that sounded exactly like a creaking door opening - right out of a horror movie - I froze for a good ten seconds then fidgeted in my chair like it had made the noise. I don't think anybody...
  13. I find educating the willfully ignorant very annoying, so in a case like this I would've done exactly what you did - smile nervously and carefully pick through the gluten mindfield in front of me. Really, it sounds like you did everything right. Don't beat yourself up about this. Do mention to your relatives that you reacted to that meal! They...
  14. I've had no reaction to Stax, and then reacted to the next tube I bought. I think they have some on-again off-again cc issues. And I'm not lactose or soy intolerant. I do mean gluten CC.
  15. Here's what they list on the label - I don't know if this helps or not! (This is the daily multi-vit) No Artificial Colors No Artificial Flavors No Preservatives No Chemical Solvents No Yeast No Gluten INGREDIENTS Calcium Carbonate, Niacinamide Ascorbate, Ferrous Fumarate, Cellulose Gel, Croscarmellose Sodium, Glycerides of Fatty Acids, Acacia...
  16. I wasn't surprised House showed a complicated version of the disease and the few facts they spit out at the end were, at least, accurate - but ending the show with the post-mentally ill mom choosing to die - and showing that as the "just the way it is" was just wrong. I hate it when writers make a martyrdom out of suicide. Here's a link to the Pellagra...
  17. My mother and I (both celiac) were in a Chinese restaurant. She asked the waiter if the sauce had any wheat in it, he hesitantly mumbled "No, no". Assuming there might be some lauguage barrier she tried to clarify and asked if they thicken the sauce with flour. He looked at her astonished and exclaimed, "We no use flowers in sauce!"
  18. I check the label for a 1-800 number and call the company on my cell right there in the store. Easier than lugging the Wheaton Group gluten-free bible around.
  19. Autoimmune disorders often go into remission during times of hormonal upheaval like puberty or pregnancy. With celiac, even during one of these "silent" phases, damage to the small intestine (or to the immune system itself) could be continuing.
  20. I get stomach pains and queasiness from any strong multivitamin. I've got a touch of gastritis so I've always chalked it up to that. I'll probably try the new chewable multivits first, they only have 12 vits-in-one, and if they irritate my stomach I'll go for the liquid. I've never had stomach trouble with the vitamin fortified drinks, Ensure etc...
  21. I just borrowed this book from the library - "Special Diet Solutions: Healthy Cooking without Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Yeast, or Sugar" By Carol Fenster, Ph.D. also "Special Diet Celebrations: No Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, or Eggs" again by Carol Fenster. Lot's of info plus practical advice and the recipes, of course.
  22. Not so weird Sean, sounds like acid reflux. It may or may not have anything to do with your (maybe) celiac. Try some pepcid or ask your doctor for a rx. Don't chew on tums - they have gluten in them.
  23. Jumping back a few pages here - Joe C probably had refractory sprue, a form of celiac disease that does NOT respond to a gluten free diet. The immune system continues to attack the small intestine despite the absence of gluten. It's treated with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive medications.
  24. Our local Wal Mart carries a gluten-free cookie, made in Ireland I believe, sorry - I can't remember the name. They were next to the Newman's Own cookies in the cookie isle. I didn't like them because they had coconut in them, but my mom, who also has celiac, loved 'em. She went back to more ($2.74 a box, raspberry, ginger or lemon) and found the ginger cookies...
  25. Well, the SSD and Medicare websites are a bust. I did email a query to SSD about special diets and coverage but odds are slim I get a reply that's helpful. You may have to bite the bullet and contact SSD. I'd try SSD/medicare first if I were you, as bad as they are, nothing's worse than the medicaid office {shudder} (As far as I know the social...
