ARCHIVED Siblings Have Celiac, When Should Baby Be Tested?
nvsmom replied to MomToCeliacs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
i would keep an eye on her for non-GI symptoms too. My cousin's 10 year old son was recently diagnosed with celiac disease and his only (recognized) symptoms were ADD and some cognitive issues. I personnaly get a lot of joint pain from gluten. It began when I was a kid; I remember at age 9, having my knees wrapped for basketball because of my "growing pains...- 6 replies

ARCHIVED Got A Scare About Non-Gluten Grains Containing Gluten! Help...
nvsmom replied to Lighthouse42's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you are really worried about amaranth, quinoa, and buckwheat, you could purchase them from companies that produse gluten-free products. they will most likely be 100%gluten-free so no contamination could happen. These should usually be safe though. I thinks oats is the grain that this happens the most to. It can be quite easily cc'ed with gluten from... -

ARCHIVED What Else Would Cause The Dgp Iga ?
nvsmom replied to Celiacmama83's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had a petechial rash about 20 years ago when I developed ITP (thrombocytopenia) which is an autoimmune disease where your platelets are killed off (by spleen and white blood cells) so your body can no longer clot properly. The petechia are tiny little spontaneous hemorrages under the skin and usually go hand in hand with extremely easy brusing and anemia... -
ARCHIVED Siblings Have Celiac, When Should Baby Be Tested?
nvsmom replied to MomToCeliacs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would test her soon too. The DGP tests are the most reliable for toddlers. If you will be continuing to give her gluten, I would sugest retesting every year if you can. Ideally, after her first test, I would have her go gluten-free to see if it makes her feel better. It would be a shame if she developed more symptoms in the months between testing and...- 6 replies

ARCHIVED Well I'll Be Darned. No More Nausea And D... Y'all Were Right.
nvsmom replied to gatita's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm so glad you are feeling better! I feel my best when I eat whole foods and limit fruits and starches too. Those cavemen were smart in spite of their smaller brains. -
ARCHIVED Concerns With Going Gluten-Free?
nvsmom replied to Mike3145's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
At first it was a bit of a panic as I went through out pantry and tossed or gave away about a quarter of it. So many fast dishes were gone like pork chops with a mushroom soup gravy. I have one picky son who loves chicken nuggets. i had to figure out new ways to cook all of those things... I think the need and anticipation of doing new things was much worse... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac...
nvsmom replied to SusanB26's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree that a weak positive is still a positive, especially if you ad been gluten-free for a time prior to testing. Those celiac tests are pretty specific to celiac (meaning it's not likely that a positive test is caused by another condition). Tis report, on page 12, shows how specific and sensitive each of the celiac tests are: Open Original Shared Link... -
ARCHIVED Question About Weight Loss
nvsmom replied to HumanDecency's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I lost about 20lbs in the first few months but put most of it back on because i felt poorly from other issues or lingering celiac disease symptoms. I discovered that I gain weight when feeling poorly - I eat extra for energy and seem to hold onto the calories more. The weight is coming off again now. -
ARCHIVED T1 Diabetic Diagnosed With Celiac With No Symptoms?
nvsmom replied to kclay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with the others in that symptoms do no always corespond to the amounts of damage being done. There are many with Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance (NCGI or NCGS) around here who have no villi damage yet their symptoms are more severe than mine. the variation is huge. One thing that could contribute to his feelings of well being is his age. There are... -
ARCHIVED 48 Hours Into gluten-free Life And Feeling Overwhelmed
nvsmom replied to MxMyownsummer's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome. Most celiacs seem to see improvements in their GI symptoms (pain and bloating) within a few days - my migraines improved really quickly too. Other symptoms like hair loss, "D" or "C" in the bathroom, rashes and arthralgias tend to take longer to imrove. As everyone has said, it really varies between people. Some experience a gluten withdrawal... -
ARCHIVED Head Trauma Causing Celiac's Disease?
nvsmom replied to BBrien's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, traumas and even pregnancies can trigger celiac disease in some people. Good luck with your doctor. -
ARCHIVED Help! I Don't Know What To Eat Anymore.
nvsmom replied to Creepy Cassie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm sorry you've been feeling unwell. Prediagnosis, I used to take a LOT of Gas X for my bloating pains too... but I think there was gluten in my capsules (not sure on that) so I tossed them after my diagnosis. Lots of your symptoms could still very well be due to your celiac disease. I used to get almost random pain, and it often built up towards... -
ARCHIVED Help With Nutritional Lab Results Please
nvsmom replied to answerseeker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know much about ALP except what I can google. Open Original Shared Link It appears to be linked to nutritional deficiencies (really really common in celiacs - like your low ferritin and potassium) and possibly hypothyroidism. Have you been tested for hypothyroidism if you have any symptoms? About 10% of celiacs have hypothyroidism - pretty common... -
ARCHIVED Is A Biopsy Really Necessary?
nvsmom replied to GDLions's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just be aware that if the damage to the intestines is patchy, it is very possible for the damage villi to be missed. that has happened to a few around here: positive tests and negative biopsy... or positive biopsy and negative blood work. If that happens, please assume they are celiac even if the doctors don't sign off on the celiac disease diagnosis. I... -
ARCHIVED Daughter Has Symptoms, How To Proceed?
nvsmom replied to justlovlie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. The fastest testing to do is the blood work. If you requested tests from your doctor, it could be done in a few days. Blood tests for celiac are not as reliable in children (possibly because they haven't been alive long enough to build up enough autoantibodies in order to be detected in the tests) but it is the least invasive. Also... -

ARCHIVED What Else Would Cause The Dgp Iga ?
nvsmom replied to Celiacmama83's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac disease can cause a whole host of problems. I personally was quite afraid that I had lupus (had 4 of the 11 diagnostic markers) and I waited 8 months to see a rheumy. The rheumy was pretty certain that celiac disease was causing my problems (even months and months into the gluten-free diet). I'm hoping she was right as my arthralgias are much better... -
Thanks. That's nice of you to say.

ARCHIVED What Else Would Cause The Dgp Iga ?
nvsmom replied to Celiacmama83's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've never heard of a positive DGP IgA being caused by anything other than celiac. I find it surprising that it's specificity is 93-96%, I expected it to be higher.... But with those numbers you have a bout a 5% chance that your positive test was caused by something else. If you have no celiac symptoms, and do not experience an improvement of your symptoms... -

ARCHIVED Intolerances - How Do You Know?
nvsmom replied to Lasmamoe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would imagine that any skin reactions (new acne) you would have to food sensitivities would be within a day or so of the exposure and the dispappear within a week or so once the offending food is out of your system, but I'm not well versed in this area. Hopefully someone else can offer you advice. Best wishes. -
That's great that you have found how to work around celiac (aside from a few accidents) and are in a good place with it. My favourite fortune cookie ever said: "Acceptance is the key to happiness." That's so true for anyone living with a chronic disease. It's makes life easier if you work with what you've got. I hope you continue to feel...

ARCHIVED Early Pregnancy And Blood Test Results
nvsmom replied to hannely's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hit a withdrawal some the migraines got worse for a short time before it got better. Give it a few weeks to see changes starting to happen. I now only have migraines a couple days a month whereas before it was 10-15 days a month... I was soo happy my migraines were gluten linked; I had resigned myself to migraines for the rest of my life - I'm sure you... -
ARCHIVED Am I Being A Hypochondriac?
nvsmom replied to Mimako310's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh no, not a hypochondriac for sure! You can't fake pain, headaches, blood and diarrhea. You've listed a bunch of celiac symptoms, and have autoimmune diseases in your family - I recommend getting tested too... And testing your kids as well. The full celiac panel is: tTG IgA and tTG IgG DGP IgA and DGP IgG EMA IgA Total serum IGA AGA IgA and AGA IgG...
