ARCHIVED Sprouted Grains
elonwy replied to Sandyo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
And Niether is Spelt, though many helath food store workers have told me Spelt is ok. 'Ware the Health Food Store workers advice, or that of people on a health food kick. Just enough knowledge to make em dangerous. -Elonwy -
Potato vodkas sold in the US: Blue Ice (Idaho) Chopin (Poland) Teton Glacier (Idaho) Luksusowa (Poland) They are all very nice, though I favor Chopin. I have been glutened by cranberry juice in the past. I also get severe Dh-like reactions to many chemicals liks detergents, though its not a gluten thing. I cannot be exposed to dyes or perfumes or...

ARCHIVED How Did You Acquire Celiac?
elonwy replied to tasha's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've always had a touchy tummy, and was considered borderline autistic as a small child and had an "attention disorder", in high school it got much worse and I had serious behavioral problems. After high school I got hooked on "low carb" and felt fine for a number of years. I caught a flu on a plane back from Europe that turned into Pneumonia about 4 years... -
ARCHIVED Any Gluten-free Dry Cat Food?
elonwy replied to eleep's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm in the city, so my kitties are indoor cats. My mom's cats back home are outdoor, but she feeds them cat food because all the birds that live around her are endangered, so she tries to make sure they aren't hungry enough to go after wildlife. In addition to the dry food I feed them Naturals, which is a canned food made with human grade ingredients. The... -
ARCHIVED Any Gluten-free Dry Cat Food?
elonwy replied to eleep's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got glutened by a face full of cat food dust a while back and switched to Eukanuba to avoid the problem. I still wash my hands because it smells gross, but I'm not worried about opening the bag anymore. The cats seem to like it better anyway, so its working for everyone. You have to switch them slowly though, or they won't adjust. -Elonwy -
ARCHIVED So What Do You Do When You Can't Sleep?
elonwy replied to megsylvan2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I take sonata. Its never bothered my stomach, it puts me to sleep in 20 minutes, and I don't wake up groggy. Fabulous stuff. Elonwy -
We were in the car once leaving a restaurant and I started freaking out because I couldn't find my sunglasses. My boyfriend turns to me and says "the ones on your head?" and I reply. "Yeah I can't find them. We have to go back." to which he repeats "the ones on your head?" I stared at him for a full minute before I realized what he was saying. Elonwy

ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
elonwy replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
I had severe personality changes due to celiac that caused massive depression and I made some decisions during my sick time that I would never had made in a sane frame of mind because I couldn't think clearly. I really liked that they touched on those issues. I thought I was crazy for a long time, and its a great relief to me that I don't have to live the... -
ARCHIVED Positive Blood Work, Negative Gi Biopsy
elonwy replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had a positive blood test and an inconclusive biopsy. I went gluten-free the day after the biospy and by the time I met with my doctor to go over results two weeks later the change was so obvious I was given the Celiac diagnosis. Have you tried gluten free? It might be worth giving it a go for a month or two to see if there is a change. If there is a... -
ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
elonwy replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
I loved it. I whooped and hollered when I heard the words Villious Atrophy, Celiac and gluten free. Now way more people think this is a real thing, and have heard abuot it. I keep trying to explain to my friends about how it made me crazy and they're like "whatever" and I know I can go "see told ya". That makes me happy. I love House. Elonwy -

Fox. -Elonwy -
Possibly, since I have neither now that I'm gluten free. I don't know that I noticed a direct connection, but I also wasn't exactly looking, and I'm not really willing to go back to eating gluten to investigate I also had bad insomnia, which is also gone. All that brain stuff is probably connected in some way. I haven't taken my Sonata in months. Elonwy

Its like I haven't woken up completly. You know when you first wake up and you're kinda fuzzy and groggy, its like that but it doesn't go away. And I'm stoopid. I'm a really smart person, and I can't find words, remember how to do simple things, or find anything. I haven't had brain fog since going gluten free except for the few times that I've accidenlty...

ARCHIVED Palm Pilot Question
elonwy replied to SueC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are updates every couple months, I have found the subscriptions worthwhile sofar. I have to say I use the food lists more than the drug lists though, its got more stuff in it. Elonwy -
I had a friend who worked at Wendy's and I would not trust the chili. Whenever they would burn a burger or anything like that, it would get tossed in the "chili meat drawer" and then chili would be made with it the next day, so who knows whats in there. Not even from a gluten standpoint --ewwww. When someone who works somewhere won't eat an item made at the...

ARCHIVED Ignorant Server Of The Day
elonwy replied to floridanative's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I get the exact opposite, where they refuse to put butter or anything on my food after I explain the gluten thing. I'm ok with dairy, so I'd rather have it, and get kind of irked when they come out an explain that they made sure there was no butter in my food. At no point do I even bring dairy or butter up! I usually don't fight it though. <sigh> Elonwy -
ARCHIVED Sex, Desire And Whether Other People Can Handle This
elonwy replied to eleep's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah my boyfriend didn't want to have kids with me because of Celiac. It absolutely changed the way I saw him after that fact. The thing is, he's lived a sheltered life, and has never been exposed to ANYTHING, let alone an illness like this. I actually think he was better with it when I was sick, than when I started to get better. Mainly we broke up because... -
ARCHIVED Sex, Desire And Whether Other People Can Handle This
elonwy replied to eleep's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't see myself as a "sick person". Theres a bunch of foods I can't eat, and I've got to be careful about CC in wierd ways but I'm not "sick". I was sick but I'm better now. If you come across as someone who's sick, who's got a "disease" then they'll pick up on that, and alot of them won't be able to deal. If they can't deal with the way I have to order... -
ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
elonwy replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
Nope, its here in LA. The exterior overheads are somewhere else, not sure where, but all the stuff with the actors is done on a sound stage here. Hugh and Jesse ( Chase) relocated to here for the time being, and Cameron has been living here. I work at USC and Brain Singer is an SC grad, so they all came down to talk about the show. It was fun, you can tell... -
ARCHIVED How Soon After Eating Gluten Do You Fall Ill?
elonwy replied to againstthegrain's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
About 15-20 minutes after eating the offensive item, I start to bloat up and get stomach cramps. I don't get "bad poo" until about 2 hours later, then I'm going every hour until its done. My brain fog and aches usually hang out for about three days though, and my tummy will bloat up when I eat anything for the next few days. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
elonwy replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
Chase is actually the aussie guy, the girl is Cameron. My friend is actually poker buddies with both of those actors, and I got to meet Hugh Laurie a couple weeks ago, which was awesome. ( and slightly heart pounding) Elonwy -
I had horrible insomnia up until I went gluten free. It was so bad I had to start medicating because I would turn into a zombie by the end of the week. Now I'm in bed by 11:30 on weeknights and waking me up is a feat, but I'm up by 7 on work days. This is from someone who lived on 2 hours a night for years, just from never being able to fall asleep. Though...

ARCHIVED I Want To Quit The Diet
elonwy replied to againstthegrain's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Every now and then I get a little fed up and start to stop being so attentive, and it usually ends up with me being horribly ill for a week. I don't ever "cheat" specifically, but I'll get fed up with wait staff and chance it and it usually ends badly. I think that the frustration of the diet is easier to deal with than the pain and fatigue of being sick... -
ARCHIVED Omg - The Envelopes At The Atm!
elonwy replied to DingoGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't lick envelopes because I got a paper cut on my tongue once and that cured me. I carry a glue stick in my purse, and if I don't have that I put spit on my finger and use that, and change fingers if I have to use more. Elonwy -
Don't get the sauce, as they dip a knife on it to spread on the buns. They all have a seperate grill area set aside, except for maybe the little tiny drive in places, and you can ask them to cook it away from the buns and they will do that. It may take a little longer, but its worth it. I eat there about once a month or every two, and never get sick. Elonwy
