  1. I don't know that I "forget" but I'm much more chill about it. Its no longer "I have Celiac DISEASE" its more like, this is just how I am. I eat funny, I scrutinize everything, it takes me longer than other people to order, etc, etc. Its a comfortable routine that is occasionally upset by a supposedly gluten-free product, or someones hap hazard crumb slinging...
  2. The only Dannon that is ok is the plain one. From Dannon: Gluten: This protein is found in wheat, oats, rye and barley. DANNON yogurt products are not formulated to contain gluten, but they can't be considered gluten free. The natural system for stabilizing flavor might contain ingredients derived from gluten sources. Since there is a current lack of consensus...
  3. My dermatologist was kind useless, though I didn't know what DH was at the time, so didn't know to ask for the tests. My hair was thinning a bit too and I'm 28, so that was scary, but its much fuller and stronger now that I'm gluten free. Elonwy
  4. Open Original Shared Link The latest, from 2004. The original "oats are safe" research 2001: Open Original Shared Link Another study from 2000: Open Original Shared Link I'm not sure what the current state of research is, but those are the medical studies that have been done. Elonwy
  5. Amy's has been having issues. The pizza is made in a dedicated facility but the rest is not. I was fine, then this weekend was made really sick by the cheese enchiladas, now I'm going to wait til they work it out. I love Blue Diamond nut thins, they've never given me a problem. I don't trust Hersheys. The only thing that's never made me sick is the plain...
  6. SOME celiacs respond to the protien in oats (avenin) the same way as they do to gluten. If you were eating Quaker oats or any american grown oats, then thats not really a test, because of the cross contamination. There are a couple american companies that sell gluten free oats ( google gluten free oats) and McCanns is safe. Oatmeal used to hurt my stomach...
  7. I used to get sick all the time and I don't think I've had a cold since I've been Gluten free. Like gfp said, having an auto-immune disorder means you have an overly strong immune system, it just happens to be a confused one. When you're gluten free and its not busy fighting your cells, it has time to deal with the stuff that it should. When its busy freaking...
  8. Wow. Those look really good. How cool is that? Elonwy
  9. My bumps seem to be the same as yours. They will appear and can stay as long as a month, but usually only hang out for about a week. Most of mine show up on my neck, right along my hairline. Doctors could never tell me what they were, but they went away after I stopped eating gluten and only come back when I get glutened. I used to get the rash constantly...
  10. You'll need to call the main company that makes it and ask where the starch comes from. I have a few medicines that have "starch" and when I contacted the companies it was corn and potato, but you should check each one. I don't know about the lactose, I don't have dairy issues. Elonwy
  11. I was just on antibiotics for an absessed tooth and they made me really really sick, just like gluten. I wasn't eating anything but fluids, my mouth was so messed up I couldn't chew so theres no way I got gluten, but it was just like it. Took a few days for me to stop feeling sick. Elonwy
  12. If I use a shampoo or hair product that has wheat in it I get those itchy sores all over my scalp. I've switched to Dove products and I no longer walk around looking like I have fleas. Ingested gluten gives me skin bumps (slighty red, not really itchy but painful, kind of like a pimple with no head), gluten contact on skin give me itchy scabby sores. I'm...
  13. No one at the place I go to speaks english other than "pick color" and "you pay now". I don't get pedicures, i do those myself at home because I can't stand people touching my feet. I do get manicures though, and just shake my head and pull my hands away when they try to put the lotion on. I usually only get a clear coat, just because I work with my hands...
  14. Uncle Ben's - Per customer representative in June, 2005, the following UNCLE BEN'S Brand Products are gluten free (free from wheat, rye, oats, and barley): * Uncle Bens Original Converted Brand Rice * Uncle Bens Instant Rice * Uncle Bens Whole Grain Brown Rice * Uncle Bens Instant Brown Rice * Uncle Bens Boil-in-Bag Rice *...
  15. Need a donut? Open Original Shared Link They're more of the cake donut variety ( I always liked cake donuts better anyway) but yummmm. If you order them online, be sure to put them in the freezer as soon as you get them to keep them fresh. Many Whole Foods carry them, there is a store locater on the site as well. Elonwy
  16. Have you checked the ritalin itself for gluten? The pharmacy might know, or you may have to call the manufacturer directly. I had to do that with all my daily drugs. I was put on ritalin in high school. ( teenager that doesn't want to pay attention in school - go figure) It made me nuts and I'd stay up until 2am every night. I've also been put on several...
  17. Your symptoms are word for word what I went through before going on the diet. The itchy scalp thing especially used to drive me insane. I fought for a diagnosis here in the US, but alot of that had to do with convincing my family that indeed this was something real and that it wasn't "all in my head" or "just IBS and stress". Since you already have a first...
  18. Wine does not contain gluten. The really cheap stuff that you get in grocery stores thats "peach flavored" or whatever and wine in a box, maybe those have gluten ingredients, but if you were out at dinner, chances are that's not what you had Elonwy

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

The FACT remains that commercially grown oats in the united states are not safe for celiacs because of cross contamination during growth and processing. For those Celiacs who can tolerate oats there is at least one company who grows and processes them in such a way that they are free of contamination here in the US, and McCanns in Ireland also has safe growth...
  20. I'm glad you had good eats! A Votre Sante is great. I can't do raw foods, they just go through my system like gluten. Its great when people are freindly though Elonwy
  21. Yeah that really wierd. Mine was outpatient surgery as well, though they did make me sign the form saying I wouldn't sue them if I died while under anesthesia. There are risks and complications that are possible, but you go home right after you wake up. Some people get really freaked out by this kinda stuff though. Feel kinda bad for the husband. Elonwy

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

Mainstream oats in the US are not ok. HUGE CC issues. Its not ok for Celiacs to oats that aren't grown specifically for gluten free use. Here is the link to Taco Bells allergens list. Open Original Shared Link Elonwy
  23. Yeah my mom has had thyroid issues for years, and was specifically instructed not to take melatonin. I was advised not to take it as well, because of her history. They actually use it in some cases to treat thyroid issues, depending on the case, but when not prescribed it can cause problems. Melatonin is naturally created by our thyroids, so we're adding...
  24. Valerian root is another herbal supplement that works as a sleep aid. It also helps with anxiety, which can contribute to lack of sleep. Your body eventually gets used to Melatonin, and you have to keep upping the dose as you go, and there have been studies that link it to thyroid problems. Anyone with an abnormal thyroid should not take melatonin without...
  25. I've never used Dapsone, my DH went away with the gluten free diet. Be as supportive as possible, and don't ever encourage him to cheat. There are alot of really scary side effects and risks of illnesses like several forms of cancer, that go along with gluten intolerance is you don't follow the diet. There is a big link between gluten intolerance and fertility...
