ARCHIVED Brain Fog
elonwy replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I find it very interesting that one of the recommendations for adrenal fatigue is a low-gluten or gluten free diet. Fascinating. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED Oats?
elonwy replied to kevsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thats why I keep getting my bloodwork done, to make sure I'm not reacting. ANd to make sure Gluten isn't sneaking in anywhere else. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED Oats?
elonwy replied to kevsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Quaker will state on one hand that some of thier products are gluten free by ingredient, but then will state that thier is gross cross-contamination in all of thier facilities and they can't garuntee gluten free for any of thier products. These kinds of mixed messages just tick me off. Especially since the first time I called them they said "oh yeah grits... -
ARCHIVED Do You Ever Start To Think...
elonwy replied to Natlay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ah the pain. Maybe we talk about it less because we block it out? Severe stabbing, wrenching, gut twisting, burning pain. Pain with cold sweats that have left me so incapaciatated I've spent days and nights lying in bed, there is always one strange position, usually on my side, that feels slightly better. Pain so bad I would lie there and cry, not sob, cause... -
ARCHIVED Oats?
elonwy replied to kevsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have a small amount of Oats in my diet, though I only eat Mccanns. I don't trust quaker at all, everything I've ever eaten of theirs made me sick before I discovered that they themselves say there is cross-contamination in thier products. Not even oats, thier grits and rice cakes, all made me really sick. I don't eat oats every day, oatmeal maybe once... -
I have a contact allergy to wheat as well as Celiac and DH. It's definitely a different rash. My DH shows up as itchy pimple like bumps on my scalp and hairline, and my contact rash is just that, a red itchy rash with tiny bumps. Elonwy

ARCHIVED My Vegas Trip Did Not Go Very Well
elonwy replied to j9n's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Along with all that, did you check on the juice in the drink? Not all juice is gluten-free, and I have had severe reactions to several juices, and alway check the label when ordering a mixed drink. I also cannot tolerate grain vodkas, though my reaction is different than a gluten reaction, and based on several other things, I think I am also allergic to wheat... -
ARCHIVED Grilled Cheese And Tomato Soup
elonwy replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kinnikkinick is perfect for grilled cheese. Annie's makes a gluten free tomato soup that's pretty good. I had to do the same thing about a month in. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED Is Gluten Free Gravy A Myth?
elonwy replied to FeedIndy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The cornstarch is most likely what gave you the lumps. Like others have said, make the slurry first, with cold water. That'll prevent the cornstarch from lumping up on you. Cornstarch can be tricky at first. The first time I tried a gluten-free gravy with cornstarch, it bombed. Of course I was expecting company, so I had to call my mom in a panic, and she... -
ARCHIVED Bleu Cheese
elonwy replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have switched to Feta for my salads, since its so hard to find blue cheese without "wheat" in the label. Or at least within my price range . Atheknos is owned by Kraft, and stands by Kraft's labeling policy. MMMMM. Goat cheese. Elonwy -
I eat out alot. Not as much as I used to, but still quite a bit. I have weeks of work where I'm on call 24 hours for 7 days straight, and I have neither the time or energy to cook, or even be home sometimes. That being said, I'm really really picky about where I eat out. I eat alot of sushi, and have several sushi restaurants I'm a regular at where they...

I'm a Bushmills fan. Triple distilled. Good stuff. Elonwy

K's cider is gluten free. Can be found in six packs at many grocery stores. Elonwy

My GERD went away completely. I was however, unresponsive to GERD medication, so it was purely a symptom of Celiac, and I only had it for about a year before being diagnosed. It was really bad, but I didn't have that much damage. Elonwy

Soft Polenta is a good base for alot of things instead of potatos or rice. Goes best with birds and fish. Soft Polenta: salt & ground pepper 3/4 cup Yellow corn meal 3 tbsp butter In a large saucepan over high heat bring 4 cups water with 1 1/2 ts sa;t and 1/8 tsp pepper to boil. add cornmeal slowly in a steady stream whisking constantly until...

I used to love salad bars. I don't go near them anymore. The ones at Whole Foods are better at segregation, but how many times when making a salad did random things drop in the wrong bowl, or tongs get moved around? When I first was diagnosed, I thought "how bad can at be?". Then I went and took a good look, with new eyes, and saw possible contamination everywhere...

As a semi regular who tips very well, I have to say it really does wonders. Everyone wants to be appreciated at thier job, and if someone goes the extra mile for you, and pulls out all the juice boxes so you can read the labels, and answers those bazillion questions so you can get a fruity girly drink, they deserve a really big tip. I personally love the...

ARCHIVED Is This Another Possible Symptom?
elonwy replied to floridanative's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When I was a kid and would stay over at friends houses, they would call my mother and complain "Why didn't you tell me she ate so much?" I was a short under-weight little vacuum. Funny how those cute stories from childhood can come back and make you think "hmmmm, yep had it back then too." Elonwy -
ARCHIVED Is Beer A Trigger For Celiac's?
elonwy replied to capecodda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Beer has always made me sick. I've never liked it, because it aways gave me that too-full ucky feeling. Now I know why. Elonwy -
Yeah I've also gotten sick while sharing a cigarrete with someone who was drinking a beer. That was a while ago. Had I known he was going to kiss me I probably wouldn't have let him, but I got taken by surprise. I think it was because he was drinking beer at the time, and I could actually taste beer. I didn't get really sick, but there was definite gurgling...

I loooove martini's and fruity things. I always ask what brand of juice they're using, and ask to read the label if they'll let me, its usually not a problem. I don't trust Tropicana. Pucker is gluten free, so thats an easy one, I love my green apple martinis. I go to bars that carry blue ice and Chopin on purpose so I can have martinis. Rum and coke is always...

ARCHIVED Annies
elonwy replied to Lister's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love Annies Balsamic vinagrette. Its really good. I have never had a problem with any of Annie's gluten-free products. Elonwy -
I'm always just open and up front about it. I explain that I'm gluten intolerant, they respond with Wha?, I go into no WRBO, and they go wow, get slighlty overwhelmed at first and then I offer to deal with the food part. Seriously, I think he'll be more offended if he finds out later that you couldn't eat that stuff that if you tell him up front. And the...

ARCHIVED Envelopes
elonwy replied to nannyb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, I'm of the garunteed to get paper cut on tongue variety as well. I also look at all those people in front of me in line at the atm and think "no way I'm putting that in my mouth". No for gluten, but just germs. ick. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED Ok, Now What!?
elonwy replied to mythreesuns's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My GI insisted there was no way I had celiac disease, since my blood work, though positive, was low, and my biopsy was inconclusive. "no gross evidence of sprue" whatever that means. I went gluten-free the day after the endoscopy, and came back to discuss results two weeks later, and you could SEE the change in my face. I went militantly gluten-free though...
