ARCHIVED Why Does My Tongue Sizzle From Dairy?
elonwy replied to Jeepster's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I get that with certain foods that I have oral allergies to. Burning tingling. I get it with Kiwis, mangos and cherries. Its a freaky feeling. -
ARCHIVED Soft Corn Tortillas
elonwy replied to Viola 1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I ate them all the time, but I've recently found a local brand here in the bay that also makes the gluten-free claim that taste much better, they taste really fresh. Mission are good, but mass produced. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED I've Got A Rotten Cold
elonwy replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you need a cough drop to get you through, as I just did with a cold I had as I couldn't even swallow my own spit and just needed to be comfortable enough to stop crying, Robitussin Honey cough and the Honey centers ones are gluten-free. As far as my lists go, Halls is only gluten-free in sugarless, which I can't stand, as artificial sweetners make me ill... -
If the former, also, recipe would be loved. I would kill for a gluten free Bao recipe. Elonwy

ARCHIVED San Fran, San Jose, gluten-free Rest
elonwy replied to grantschoep's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Digging through the celiacbayarea yahoo group. None of this is personally confirmed. Betelnut on Union St. has a brief gluten-free menu. Willow Glen Aqui has gluten-free items (Aqui Cal-Mex) Evidently Old Spaghetti factory has gluten-free pasta on hand. (San Jose) Dosa on Valencia in SF Santa Cruz - Al Boccalino Restaurant HTH a little. -
ARCHIVED San Fran, San Jose, gluten-free Rest
elonwy replied to grantschoep's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I asked the same question when I moved up here and got nothing. I found pizza in the East Bay, but thats it, other than the obvious ones like PF Changs. I know they are up here, but finding the info is proving difficult. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED One More "your Favorite" Question-pancake Mix?
elonwy replied to FeedIndy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm going to chime in with Pamela's. I have non-gluten-free friends who buy it now just cause it tastes so good. I think its the almond flour that does it for me. I'm very much a small griddle cake pancake type person, and these are perfect for that. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED San Francisco/bay Area- Weird Fish
elonwy replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Cafe Rustica in Oakland has gluten free pizza You should call ahead to make sure they have the dough in stock. Thats the only one other than PF Changs and Outback that I know of specifically, but I'm new to the area. I'll let you know if I find anything else. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED San Francisco/bay Area- Weird Fish
elonwy replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Whoops, forgot I had posted this on this board as well. Yeah, about a week and a half after I posted this, they changed chefs, who changed the way the fryers were segregated. So it WAS gluten-free, but is no longer. Very sad. I'm in the East Bay, and made a special trip as well, but missed the window by about two days. I had Celiac friends who ate their... -

Ok, wheew. I was baffled there for a minute. Thank you for the clarification. -
ARCHIVED Can We Talk About Iodized Salt For A Bit?
elonwy replied to SarahTorg's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Why exactly, other than the obvious, is iodized salt bad. Where is the gluten? I use sea salt to cook at home just cause it tastes better, but I'm very confused by this thread. Elonwy -
ARCHIVED I Need Pizza. Pizza Made By Someone Else. That Tastes Like Pizza.
elonwy replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants

ARCHIVED What Are You Craving?
elonwy replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yup. It has to be the AMC Tostitos Movie Nachos, those are the only ones. Its made by Frito Lay, and its the same cheese they sell in the stores. I contacted Frito Lay directly regarding them. All the other movie theater with their generic brand weird movie cheese came up as not-gluten-free, but the Frito Lay stuff is ok. Even has ingredient list on the cheese... -
ARCHIVED What Are You Craving?
elonwy replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
AMC movie nachos are gluten-free, made by Frito-Lay. Sometimes I will pick an AMC to go to, then the movie, just cause I want movie nachos. I have been eating pretzels like nobodies business, cause I found a place that sells EnRG and Glutino pretzels. First pretzels in a year and a half. I cried when I opened the first bag, then called like three people... -
ARCHIVED South Beach Diet And gluten-free Compatible?
elonwy replied to elfkin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yeah, I didn't really add it up until after the fact, but when I was on phase one I felt great, and then when I added in bread and stuff in phase two I would feel icky again. Same thing when I did that Atkins thing way back in the day (which eventually made me feel sick just cause its not healthy, just in a different way). After the celiac diagnosis it all... -
ARCHIVED South Beach Diet And gluten-free Compatible?
elonwy replied to elfkin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
South Beach diet is awesome. Phase 1 is completely gluten free. Phase 2 and 3 depend on adding in whole grains, but you can substitute with grains that are gluten free. Its not super strict either, so you can change it to suite YOU, as long as you stay within the guidelines. He does add in nuts to alot of things, but again, easy to just leave it out... -
ARCHIVED Another Birth Control Pill Question
elonwy replied to Dancypants's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmm. This could be an issue. Are you worried about the pill working for pregnancy purposes, or just so that you'll be getting the effects of the hormones that they are trying to give you? Not a dig, just wondering. I never saw a change in effectiveness, but my malabsorption never got THAT bad, was relatively mild compared to many. Is the patch an option... -
ARCHIVED I Need Your Top Ten Dining Out Questions/concerns
elonwy replied to tiffjake's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I'm sure I'm repeating, but this is what comes to mind: Communication: Is the wait staff communicating to the kitchen what the needs are. Should they consider allowing direct communication to a manager or to the kitchen to avoid crossed signals? I often ask for this if I don't feel wait staff is "getting it". Training: Do they KNOW what gluten is and... -
ARCHIVED New Here, Lots Of Questions
elonwy replied to freedomart's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome, I hear you on the drug issue. I have no problems taking stuff I know I need, but the tendency to throw antidepressants at people instead of trying to actually figure out whats wrong with them is rather appalling. Over the years before we discovered Celiac I was told over and over again that I was depressed and needed to be medicated, or that I... -
ARCHIVED Birth Control Pills?
elonwy replied to Electra's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm going to basically ditto the previous post. I've been on the pill since I was 14 due to crazy periods. You have to find the one and the dose that works for you. And make sure they are gluten free. I have never had problems with BC, except for once when they switched me to a "new, better" pill that they had come out with which made me really moody and... -
ARCHIVED Gardasil

ARCHIVED Gardasil
elonwy replied to Katie618's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hey- I wasn't attacking you. I'm trying to figure out if I can get the vaccine or not, as I have had HPV. Your comment was interesting to me, and I went to the FDA website to get more information for myself, and posted what was relevant so as to further discussion. I think the HPV vaccine is awesome, I just want to make sure I can get it without getting... -
ARCHIVED Gardasil
elonwy replied to Katie618's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is the information I was looking for: # Will Gardasil help a female who already has a vaccine type HPV? In the studies, females with current or past infection with one or more vaccine-related HPV types prior to vaccination were protected from the diseases caused by the other remaining HPV types contained in the vaccine. So it doesn't help with... -
Thats a hard one. I have been brought to tears because I grabbed a can of tomato sauce that wasn't gluten-free and didn't read the label before dumping it into the pot of food I was making. I didn't eat it, but it felt like I'd been smacked with a hammer once I realized what I'd done. For me its just a matter of setting my resolve and moving on, and not...

My gotcha in a restaurant with cheese was a cheese and fruit plate, with sliced cheese. They used the same knife and cutting board to cut the cheese as they had the bread for someone else. Granted, tiny restaurant, but something to think about. I've never had issues with shredded cheese.
