  1. Brain Fog is the worst part of a glutening. I use B12 to get me through the worst of it. And no, you are not imagining it, and if anyone tells you so (especially doctors grrr) you have my permission to kick them in the shins and blame it on restless leg syndrome. (I'm not bitter, I was just told I was "imagining things" or "exaggerating" for years by...
  2. I totally would get restless leg, and still get it when accidently glutened. Do not miss that at all. On the bread... might I suggest not jumping head first into the substitutes? Give yourself a chance to forget what the "real" thing tastes like. I waited a while, because I couldn't find things, I find the farther I get from the memory of something, the...
  3. Celiac isn't an allergy. I have a topical allergic response to wheat, which means if I touch it, then I get a rash and hives. This is an allergic reaction, and is completely secondary to my Celiac Disease. It is not a reaction to gluten, it is a reaction to something else in wheat. I could rub rye or barley on my skin all day, and not get a reaction (not...
  4. I have found that my reactions to gluten from barley are more varied than my reactions to gluten from wheat. They also tend to be a little more subtle. I'm referring specifically to a time when I unknowingly ate something with Malt flavoring, and another time when a malt beverage was involved. I though I had made myself clear, but was still served the wrong...
  5. At the risk of sounding like George Carlin, the world is unfortunately filled with stupid people. I also say this with the knowledge that I often do stupid things, but I do try to own my stupidity. I also use my disease as a litmus test for friendship. I give people the benefit of the doubt on the initial stupid reaction (my favorite thing being "Oh wow...

    ARCHIVED Sushi?

This topic keeps popping up I also want to add, that I live on the west coast, and grew up in the Pacific. I am a total sushi snob. I do not eat "cheap" sushi, so all of my assumptions are made based on higher-end restaurants that are on a coast or an island. I totally agree with the above posts about the pre-made or cheaper stuff being much more risky....
  7. Its not a nickname so much but I call getting glutened "pookie belly" because my belly sticks out so far. As in "I have pookie belly today".
  8. I agree with the Lunbergs. I add frozen veggies and shrimp while its cooking, and that makes it a meal. I only like the tuna Mr's Leepers, but I never liked hamburger helper, only the tuna one before gluten-free. I use Tuna in the chicken one as well, and it comes out quite well. Elonwy
  9. The hidden gluten in cigarettes and cigarette rolling paper is in the paper and the glue. The tobacco itself and anything else you may choose to place in said rolling papers does not contain gluten (unless you run into flavored tobacco land, in which case all bets are off). As for those who like to "roll their own". Tops and Job are NOT gluten free. Rizla...
  10. I am going to second the props for Dove and Unilever. Where they don't provide a list, they will, most definitely, clearly label wheat barley rye or oats on the label of their products (usually in parentheses after an ingredient). I use almost exclusively Dove products because I trust them.
  11. So my DH finally flared up to the point where I needed to try the drugs. Usually its manageable with steroid cream, but its been crazy lately, to the point where I wake up scratching in my sleep. He put me on 100mg/day. By the second day I was having blurred vision, dizziness and some other odd effects that had me rather freaked out. I'm on the small side...
  12. I believe WDW stands for Walt Disney World. Just a wild guess on my part
  13. Hate to bring in Politics, but not the biggest fan of IAMs right now. Open Original Shared Link Elonwy

    ARCHIVED House

As a ridiculously mad obsessed fan-girl (ok not that bad but when I met him at a panel I thought I was going to hyperventilate) I must point out that his last name is Laurie. He's brilliant. House is not his best piece of work, as I am a huge Black Adder and Booster and Jeeves fan, but its his best American work. I love the show. It's well written and witty...
  15. I just got it, and haven't had much chance to use it yet, but I think it will come in handy. I definitely can't live without the dining cards. It has definitely opened up my options up here in the Bay Area. Elonwy
  16. According to the Food Allergies statement from KFC, their coleslaw has gluten, as do their mashed potatos. Since most flaked potato mixes for mashed potatos have gluten, I'm not surprised. The corn on the cob, green beans and salads w/o croutons are about all we get there. I won't go there, but I do make chicken at home. i use corn flakes or potato chips...
  17. From their website: . Is there any gluten in Brown Cow yogurts? Though we don't add gluten, there may be trace amounts of gluten in our yogurt, which come from the processing of the fruit and flavors with a grain alcohol. The only flavors we can be absolutely certain have no traces of gluten are our nonfat, low fat and whole milk plain yogurts. We are still...
  18. I have worked in kitchens. I know what its like back there. I won't eat at chains that don't have gluten-free menus, cause they are particularly bad, unless its something high end like Houstons. I know they pay attention. They also have video cameras on the kitchen so you can watch them make your food. As far as kitchens go, I rank applebees and those sorts...
  19. The first two weeks I was an emotional wreck. I did not cheat, because I wanted to feel better so badly, but I cried and threw tantrums and was horribly depressed. The dreams were bad too. That all went away. The first few weeks are a little overwhelming, as you discover all the things that you can and can't have, and drive your loved ones nuts with every...
  20. I have reacted to their seasoning packets, but its not gluten. I have discovered that, though I don't have a problem with soy, anything with hydrolyzed soy protein kills my stomach. Just throwing that out there, as it took me a while to figure that one out.
  21. If you are going to post something like this, please begin your post with "SPOILER ALERT". I have a weird schedule and have to Tivo stuff and watch it later in the week, and I had not seen this episode yet. Thank you Elonwy
  22. Or have them make an exception, and let her take food with her. She may not like it as much, but if you've prepared everything ahead of time, and an adult is in charge of giving her her food, maybe that might work. I know they do that with medications, so make sure they understand that its just like medication. Probably difficult, but just an alternate thought...
  23. I think there is a Delphi List that is more up to date, though I am no longer on Delphi.. anyone care to point the way? This list is from March 5, 2005 so is almost two years out of date. I would recommend double-checking all of it, especially since the labeling laws have changed since then. Elonwy
  24. Curry. Basil, Oregano, Parsley, sage.. top with Parmesan. Throw in some garlic powder too. Use chicken or vegetable broth or bullion instead of water. Add some tomato paste and cilantro ( do not decrease water), some chili powder too if you like it spicy. Sometimes I throw in a little butter or olive oil with spices to get a creamier effect, only a little...
  25. Please post that when you get it. I had always heard that PACE salsa was gluten-free, but I no longer remember where that data came from. Very few Queso/nacho type things are gluten-free though. Elonwy
