Where I don't think that Tropicana has specifically gluten ingredients, I have gotten very, very sick from their orange juice. There was a list I had for a while that I can't find right now that said that someone had information from the company that some of their plants had CC possibilities. I avoid all Tropicana products now. I don't know what the exact...

ARCHIVED Macaroni And Cheese
elonwy replied to Mama2GFKid's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I buy Annie's mac and cheese (in the light blue box, says gluten-free) and then add a bit of the topping to that cheese packet. Gives you the flavor of Kraft without using half the tube of cheese. The Annies is yummy all by itself too, but I understand missing that exact flavor. -
ARCHIVED Northern California On Fire
elonwy replied to fedora's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am far from the fires, right by the bay, but its really creepy and I can't really go outside. My asthma is in overdrive, and the air is so bad it makes me dizzy and gaspy to be outdoors. The sky and light is red. I can't even imagine being closer to the fires. -
ARCHIVED Need New Recipe Ideas!

Enchiladas with Spanish rice and beans? -
There is, in fact a "complete Idiots Guide to Gluten Free eating" . You can get it on Amazon, or other places where they sell the idiot guide books. As for beer, you probably won't find any in a bar, sadly. Red Bridge is gluten-free, as is Green's Beer (Belgian, and excellent). There are others, but those are the only two I like, so I don't remember the...

ARCHIVED Food For Life Brown Rice Tortillas
elonwy replied to DawnS's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know NC's a big state, but are you anywhere near the 4 Trader Joes that are out there? Their Brown Rice Tortillas are way better than Food for Life's. -
How bout getting creative with sandwiches? I grabbed some Ener-G bread (I like this best for sandwiches), got some cream cheese, salami, spicy mustard and arugula and made little sandwiches. Throw in some cole slaw or a salad, you got yourself a non-cook, light meal. Hefty up a cobb salad as a meal, or any salad, really. Throw in some meat or chicken and...

ARCHIVED Who Has The Best Cake Mix
elonwy replied to Chrissyb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I second the vote for Pamela's. Excellent chocolate cake mix. I don't like carrots, so I'm no help there. -
ARCHIVED Mom's Spagettii Sauce
elonwy replied to SweetAmber32's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are lists here and there online (someone posts one on this board every now and then) but like was mentioned, there is no substitute for reading the labels. There is a company called Clan Thompson that makes one you can subscribe to that you run on your computer. They check things regularly and have updates all the time. It costs money, buts its the... -
ARCHIVED Large Tonsils And Adenoids
elonwy replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My mom chose not to have my tonsils out when I was kid, though I had repeated issues, and mine are definitely oversized. I'm now dealing with the possibility of having to have them out as an adult, which is much more traumatic than if the surgery is done to a kid. This isn't really something that gets better as you get older. Just a thought. That being said... -
I want them to come up with a pill so I can not get sick everytime someone waves gluten near my food. I don't want to eat gluten, I just want to be not so sensitive to CC. I haven't volunteered for anything cause theres nothing near me, but I think I would if I qualified.

ARCHIVED Berry Berry Kix From General Mills
elonwy replied to savvvyseller's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The difference between Rice Chex and the other cereals is that GM actually traced the entire line of manufacturing from fields to box to makes sure that the product is indeed gluten free and doesn't come in contact with gluten. They changed the way they actually make it to meet those criteria, not just the ingredients. So for me, Rice Chex num, everything... -
ARCHIVED Having Problems Eating First Thing In The Morning
elonwy replied to Karwei5's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I also forgot to mention that probiotics might be worth a try. I know that that has helped settle my residual issues after going gluten-free. -
Just let them know you need it to be gluten-free, and they can accomodate. According to my dentist, he has some registry that tells them all about what of their products have allergens, etc. I have not ever been glutened by a dentist, though one of them did buy different gloves to work on me, and a different kind of dental dam, so maybe somethings gluten...

ARCHIVED Having Problems Eating First Thing In The Morning
elonwy replied to Karwei5's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I could never eat in the mornings as a kid, well into my early twenties. Would be totally naseous, but sometimes hungry, and my body would try to reject breakfast. Would school let him have a break for a snack earlier? Thats probably a long shot, but my mom had the teacher have a snack for me off to the side during a break or something where the other kids... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have Problems With Rice Malt?
elonwy replied to traveljunkie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am glad you posted this, as I would have assumed Rice Malt was fine. I did some digging, and it appears that the "malted" part of rice malt is indeed made by adding barley to it. The ingredients I found for Rice Malt are rice water and barley, across the board. Since its a sub-ingredient and barley isn't one of the main allergens, it appears you indeed... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Oyster Sauce?
elonwy replied to urbancowboy717's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes please, is there one? I've only found one and its from Australia, so I can't get it here. -
ARCHIVED How To Be A Gracious Guest And Remain Gluten Free?
elonwy replied to hilwacat's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Its less rude to bring your own food, I think. Also, gracious guest or not, nobodies feelings are worth getting sick over, as far as I'm concerned. I always bring my own food, and then if cooking is happening, I volunteer to assist in the kitchen and watch everything like a hawk. Even if they go on and on about wanting to make sure I don't feel "left out... -
ARCHIVED Your Favorite Cookbooks Now
elonwy replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I love cookbooks and collect them like other people collect... other things. The ones I use the most... oddly, not my Gluten free ones. I try to eat healthy and whole, so the ones I use the most are my two South Beach Diet cookbooks. I have the Quick & Easy and the original orange one. I don't really "do" the diet, I just use the recipes, substituting... -
As for Green's I have sofar only found it at two places. Bevmo here on the west coast, and served at Risotteria in NY. Here is their web site: Open Original Shared Link You may have to hunt to find it, but oh... so nummy.

ARCHIVED Nicotine Gum
elonwy replied to katebuggie28's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know nicorette is gluten-free. I would call CVS and ask. -
Check out Green's beer. Its new, Belgian, gluten-free and really, really good. Also, don't worry about trying to hard. She says "don't worry about it" but she'll love the stuff you do to keep her healthy. Saying this as a girl who often says "don't worry about it".

ARCHIVED gluten-free Canned Soup?
elonwy replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Anything with Spaghetti that is a mainstream product is going to have gluten in it. Mainstream pastas, unless specifically stated otherwise are made from wheat. -
I love PF Changs, and eat there somewhat often. I query the wait staff regularly, and always order something with a change. ei: I will order the lettuce wraps with crunchies on the side, the shanghai noodles without tomatoes, something to make sure its MY food. Then I ask them 8 times if its gluten-free, then I sniff it before I eat it (the soy sauce smells...

I make my roux with cornstarch. Takes forever, but works well. For chicken, Pamela's mixes work well. I have used the pancake mix for frying chicken and its pretty yummy. Adds a bit of sweet to it, but its a good flavor.
