  1. I agree with what everyone is saying. I personally think its a great litmus test (that and meeting my cats). People who have no respect for my needs in regard to my illness probably aren't going to have a good respect for me in other areas too, and that's unacceptable. I've dated people who tried really hard but just didn't get it, and that's different, but...
  2. I saw the new rice chex box as well and got all upset cause it didn't say Gluten Free. However, upon further perusal I noticed it does say Gluten Free, its just on the side now instead of the front. So its still good I don't know about the other stuff, as I've moved to Organic Products and Products without Laurel Sulfates.
  3. I use Pamela's shortbread for crusts, and people love it. Just crumble, add butter and smoosh into the pan.
  4. My fav thing from them is their brown rice tortillas. Nom. The granola is pretty good too.
  5. I donate blood all the time (as often as they'll let me). Celiac is definitely not a problem there.
  6. I eat at Mixt Greens everyday, but I'm not sure if that qualifies as not $$$$$. Bistro burger is pretty good about burgers with no buns, but beware the fries. They are CC, no matter how many times the stoner at the register tells you they are ok. The Indian place in Embarcadero 2 is pretty good, I haven't gotten sick ordering simple "safe" dishes and I am...
  7. I used the Kinnikinnick Crispy Chicken Coating, and it tasted remarkably similar to Original Recipe. I posted my experimentation results here: Open Original Shared Link I found that the real key to that taste is to brine the chicken. That gives you that lovely salty flavor that you get from kfc. Remember, if doing this in a frying pan, a spatter guard...
  8. Some companies do follow their grain sources from field to factory to make sure there is no cross contamination. General Mills new change of Rice Chex did exactly that, with the help of celiac specialists. Even Quakers Rice products test as contaminated and make people sick. I won't eat anything they make. I eat Lundberg Products, as they make many things...
  9. Please don't be embarrassed to ask a doctor. That's why they are there, to answer all those weird questions about why our bodies do strange things. I always write a little list before I go in, to make sure I don't forget. Ask all your questions in the beginning so that if they need extra time for you they know it up front. These are people that had to touch...
  10. Basically what that means is that there is a change for the gene to be passed on and for celiac disease to be triggered. I don't remember what the percentage chance of first degree family members is off the top of my head, but there are many stories on here, including my own, where once the first person discovered it many other people in the family did too...
  11. You could ask revolution yourself, might get a faster answer. Open Original Shared Link
  12. I highly recommend Ristotteria, which is on those lists. Its gluten-free italian, and they have baked goods and beer. So delish.
  13. I am surprised Quaker told you something was gluten free. They usually have a blanket statement saying everything they make is Cross Contaminated. I won't touch anything they make.
  14. Nacho cheese in general is not safe, though there are a few brands that are. The frito Lay one is, as is at least one of their Quesos (check the labels). I hardly ever eat fries out side my house anymore. Finding a dedicated fryer is difficult, and many of the prepackaged fry brands for restaurants are coated in stuff that has gluten in it. Better safe than...
  15. Even though they are not "no boil" noodles, I don't boil them at all, I just layer them in the lasagna and then cook. comes out fine. I find them hard to handle and very sticky/slimy when I boil them first.
  16. I think this is horrible. It just propagates what I call "plastic food". Especially pandering to kids. Ew. jerks. That being said, I work in advertising (I'm a tech, I don't actually help make the commercials, but yeah I'm a sellout, but hey, its a job) and Disney has nothing to do with the commercials they air. I mean, yeah they pay attn to who buys their...
  17. You're talking about Leaky Gut. Check out this web site. Its a lot of reading, but its well laid out. Open Original Shared Link
  18. I describe it this way: When I eat gluten, my body identifies it as a poison which triggers an auto immune response. This creates antibodies that then attack my body, causing x symptoms. This also damages my villi, which then keeps me from absorbing vitamins and stuff, and causes secondary complications. I use that or a variation thereof as a laymans cliffnotes...
  19. You could also take some gluten-free chocolate bar and shave it with a grater. That could look like dirt.
  20. In my extensive reading about the disease I have repeatedly come across references to "non-responsive Celiac disease" which is basically where people do not get better on the diet, usually due to the damage being so bad that its not reversible. Is that what he's referring to?
  21. Tinkyada has Penne too, though theirs is actually nummy
  22. I would avoid it just because it is Godiva. Godiva is one of those brands that puts barley malt in pretty much everything, and won't give any definitive gluten statements. "Company states none of their products are gluten-free due to potential cross-contamination." The good news is, cheesecake is pretty easy to make at home. There are some good recipes...
  23. Looking at the ingredient online there is wheat flour in the fruit roll and the nacho seasoning in the maxed version: Open Original Shared Link And barley malt in the chocolate in the regular version: Open Original Shared Link So if he's old enough to not eat the chocolate, then the regular one is probably fine, beware the "maxed" version.
  24. Are you referring to the type of hot dog known as red hot dogs, or a specific brand? These things vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and its important to contact each one separately. I know that some Oscar Mayer Hot Dogs are gluten-free as are Applegate Farms. I'm sure other people can chime in on gluten-free hot dog brands.
