Next time you're at Risotteria, try the Risotto. Its incredible. I am a huge fan of risotto, but find it often either over or undercooked in American restaurants. They get it right here. There is a kitchen downstairs too, and they have separate areas where they cook and prep stuff.

ARCHIVED The Eggs, The Milk Or Both
elonwy replied to artselegance's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Eggs can also be the culprit. I have a severe reaction to eggs, which I noticed and removed well before we ever figured the gluten thing. I still to this day can't eat eggs straight. I don't have an allergy to them, they just destroy my stomach. That being said, many people have issues with dairy their first few months. -
ARCHIVED Fried Chicken And Onion Rings
elonwy replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hehe, I hope they come out as nummy for you as they did for me. My pic is me dressed as Kaylee, though zoomed in so you can't tell so much. Luckily there is the movie Serenity and the comic books and things, so it did not die completely, but yeah... Fox is dumb. -
ARCHIVED Fried Chicken And Onion Rings
elonwy replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just made the batter by mixing the dry stuff together then adding the egg and water, then dunked the onions in it, then straight into the oil. They did better the less they sat in the batter. -
ARCHIVED Fried Chicken And Onion Rings
elonwy replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just used my large deep skillet, with a big spatter guard (essential) I found one at Bed Bath and Beyond with a folding handle, its awesome. I had the oil about an inch thick. -
ARCHIVED Easy To Freeze Recipes?
elonwy replied to wilspika's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Simple and hard to Cross contaminate: Chicken parts (breast or thighs) with or without bone, vegetables (I use those pre-packaged veggie medleys carrots, broccolli, etc) onion and mushrooms. gluten-free Italian dressing. Cut up the onion into wedges (garlic can be added too if you like) Put it all in a large glass baking dish, cover with foil, cook at... -
I'm not a big fried food person, but every now and then, I just want an onion ring or a piece of fried chicken. I normally do a baked version (kinda like shake and bake) but I wanted to go all out this weekend. I had some great success and wanted to share. I used Saffola Oil, which is lower in saturated fats than vegetable oil, but still has a high flash...

Mine was a few months after I turned 14. I think its definitely all around better to get it at an older age. Enjoy the hassle free time

ARCHIVED Buttermilk Powder

I use Saco's too. I usually find it in the baking aisle near the corn starch and baking powder. -
ARCHIVED Frozen Pizza
elonwy replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well I use the pre-frozen ones, but since they are so boring as to just come with cheese I jazz them up and then cook them according to the directions, just adding some minutes. I also add more cheese, cause i love cheese... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cafe Frozen Meals
elonwy replied to colorado's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thats exciting. I like that it has prebiotics in it, since we have so little of that in the gluten-free diet. Thanks for the heads up -
ARCHIVED Frozen Pizza
elonwy replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like the Amy's better personally. I get the cheese pizza, then buy a bunch of my own toppings, pepperoni, onions, olives, etc. I cook it a little bit longer than it asks for to make sure the crust is cooked all the way through the middle, then serve with ranch dressing for dipping. Yum. Also: try a compromise, have a pizza topping party, where everyone... -
ARCHIVED Going To Trader Joe's And Whole Foods Market
elonwy replied to CeliacMom2008's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Trader Joes has new gluten-free ginger cookies that are just amazing. TJ's brown rice tortillas, nom. They also have a gluten-free granola that is on the sweet side, but very yummy. Whole Foods has their line of gluten-free baked goods. I like the biscuits and the scones. On the pricey side, but yummy. Also the lemon/poppy seed muffins are to die for when... -
ARCHIVED Safe Canned Tuna Fish?
elonwy replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't like mayo either so use olive oil and lemon pepper. So delicious. Capers and chives can jazz that combo up too I get the kind in water so my cats can have the juice. -
ARCHIVED Good Basic Cookie/muffin Mix?
elonwy replied to glutenfreegirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you can find it, I love Gluten Freeda's Real Cookies. Its basically frozen cookie dough in a tub, preshaped into cookie sizes. I love it because I can make one or three at a time and not end up with an entire sheet of cookies to munch on... but I live by myself so its important not to have an entire plate of cookies The chip chip hooray and Peanut,... -
ARCHIVED Safe Canned Tuna Fish?

Chicken of the Sea is gluten-free, thats the brand I buy. The broth is made of soybeans. -
You do really pretty work. I can understand not wanting to give that up. I don't think you have to, but I do think its important that you protect yourself. I've gotten violently ill from ingesting airborne gluten, (flour is seriously poofy). My mom bakes gluten stuff all the time for my dad's VA buddies, and what she does it wear gloves and a mask, which...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried The Foot Detox Cleanse Pads?
elonwy replied to susieg-1's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Google "Detox foot pads hoax" and you'll get a bunch of different links to various news sites and doctors testing them to see if they really work. As far as I can tell, its a hoax. -
ARCHIVED Pleasantly Surprised- Newark Airport
elonwy posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
So I always have food with me while traveling, because everything sold in airports seems gluten based. However, I had gotten through security faster than usual, and was perusing the option for breakfast. I flew United out of Newark, so was near gates 12-18 or thereabouts. Little kiosk-type breakfast joint called The Grain Station (not so appetizing)...but... -
I second the endorsement for Triumph. They hold up well, are translated into a bunch of different languages, and I've had a great response to them. Just used one this weekend, in fact.

ARCHIVED Glaceau
elonwy replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As of late 2006 all of their products are Gluten free. I drink them with no issues. -
Just an extra reminder, if you are going to get the blood test, you have to stay on gluten for that. Going gluten free before your test can give you a false negative. That being said, it takes a while to feel better, especially if you've been sick for a while. It does get better though

ARCHIVED Mixed Drinks
elonwy replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
One of my favs, though its sneaky cause its all alcohol is a Silk Panty, as a drink, not a shot. Its Peach Schnapps and Vodka. Tastes like candy. I'm a big fan of Green Apple Martini's, as mentioned all the Dekuyper mixers are gluten-free. I go one for one with water when I'm drinking with those having beer, so I don't get drunker than them too quickly. I... -
If you get more north and feel up to it, try the one in Emeryville. The manager's wife has celiac, and they don't screw up. The thing about PF Changs is if you go during rush time, its going to be a madhouse. I always go during "off" hours, and never on a Friday or Saturday night.

ARCHIVED So You Think You Can Dance
elonwy replied to laurelfla's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I love that show and watch it religiously. I am bummed though, because the phone lines were not working last night, i gave up and went to bed. I love Twitch and Joshua, Courtney and Katee are my favorite girls. Will is just beautiful and an amazing dancer. I hope Comfort gets voted off tonight, I really don't feel like she's on par with the other dancers...
