  1. Hang in there! I was diagnosed last November. I am going to celebrate my diagnosis date like its my birthday. In certain ways, it really is! I took a bite of jerky one day that was made by a brand that I had eaten before and thought it had great flavor, THEN I looked at the label and proceeded to spit it out before swallowing, and rinsed my mouth out...
  2. Bella, I'm 32 and was diagnosed last October. This really is the best place to be for feedback, learning, and venting. Hang in there! I went through all the same emotions you did. I'm getting settled in now and you will too!
  3. I downloaded an app for my iPhone called "MyFitnessPal" which is a calorie counter and food tracker. I entered in my height and weight. I also entered in my target weight goal. To gain weight, it put me on a 2,600 calorie per day diet. I stuck to it religiously. Sometimes I went over but never went under. I had to eat "unhealthy" by most standards to...
  4. Celiac disease never goes away. Your body can heal over time from the effects of the disease. You will never be able to safely eat anything with gluten. However, over the course of time you may be surprised by how well your body responds. To me, its actually a blessing that you figured this out. It's probably the root cause of the fibromyalgic symptoms...
  5. I'd be upset too. Your friend is not a gluten expert and risks that might be acceptable to her friend don't have to be acceptable to you. These moments are frustrating.
  6. Gemini, What you described was my exact problem. I was the skinny malnourished celiac. Because I didn't know how to cut gluten the right way I dumped all my carbs with the wheat! Whoops! It was scary. I know I'm all over this thread but these were the symptoms that freaked me out the worst. So glad to have it corrected.
  7. Ksee you are spot on with this. When I first went gluten-free cut out all my carbs in trying to cut out gluten--not intentionally, I just didn't know what I was doing. I absolutely had some ketosis like symptoms. I had no weight to give and when I worked out, my body just fed off of itself. It was scary. I don't have the issue now but the ammonia smell...
  8. 1. Every industry has good and bad--Pharma is no different. I should remind a poster in this thread that there were a lot more people dying of cardiovascular disease in the 60's than there are today. Thank you "BIG PHARMA" for blood pressure medicine that helps prevent strokes. The reality is, when society puts money behind research for a disease state...
  9. YES, you can absolutely have trouble focusing, anxious feelings, and depression from celiac disease.
  10. This is huge. I will try it. Manganese, zinc, biosil... I've finally started running again and when I hit the two mile mark my right foot starts sending a shooting pain from my middle toes and I've been wondering what the deal was. THANKS!
  11. I'm with Tanya. I think I've only had this symptom on one or two occasions since going gluten-free.
  12. I'm with Ksee, its a very serious symptom that really should be monitored closely. When I told my doctors nurse about the symptom at one point when I had it she responded "You have no clue how much you were flirting with disaster." It did resolve over time on a gluten-free diet and with an increased carb intake and water consumption. Ksee is right...
  13. When this happens, drink more water to flush it out. Then, eat plenty of carbs. Your body will do this when you aren't getting adequate carbs in your diet. Have a potato, corn, or some rice, with your meal. I don't know how active you are but don't do a work out while you are smelling ammonia and don't overdo it on protein while you are having this symptom...
  14. I haven't had my Vitamin D check since January. I will most likely have it checked again in July along with some other labs. I keep forgetting to take my Vitamin D in the morning. Went for a light jog this evening. The good news is that the shooting pain around my shoulders during running has gone away. The bad news is, I'm getting a shooting pain about...
  15. I've had flu shots in the past. Couldn't tell you if they helped or not because the flu has not typically been an issue for me. It went fine though.
  16. Wow... This thread blew my mind... I wasn't referred around too quite as many specialties but had many of the same symptoms and conversations that you mentioned. During my DX, my PCP was a good guy but just couldn't nail it down, he did finally send me to a GI and uro for some symptoms, the uro symptoms resolved almost totally since going gluten-free....
  17. Okay, so.... Probably a good point... Addendum approved!
  18. First, that really has to hurt. No wants to feel like the person that takes a pass on the family casserole. Irish Heart is right, its on you to educate and cite reputable sources. I'm in sales and my thing is this... State someone's objections before they can. So... Them (Eyeroll) You (I know, right?! Its crazy! I used to think that people...
  19. I'm soooo sorry for your loss. A friend and coworker of mine died at 36 of colon cancer that spread throughout her body. It made no sense. She always looked thin and healthy. Once I became diagnosed with Celiac it really made me feel like its very possible that she was too and just never was diagnosed based on the symptoms she confided to me leading up...
  20. Be patient! Stay on the diet longer than a month. Reason being, I had some things improve but it was several months of being gluten free to see some things resolve. I encountered some anxiety as well and it has drastically improved. Take the recommendation above and ask for the blood test. Results are most accurate while you are eating gluten. I...
  21. So, make sure you are getting your daily carbs in there as well. If your carb intake gets too low, your body will let you know it. I accidentally did this when I first went gluten-free and I felt very off and anxious. No need to camp out on carbs but if you're having breakfast--a slice of gluten-free toast, with lunch try some "Nut-Thins" chips, and it...
  22. I had some leg cramping going on. On a scale of 1-10 it was probably at most a 4. Enough to notice but not enough to stop me in my tracks. Stay hydrated with water and make sure your potassium intake is adequate. If you're a kidney or heart patient, be sure to talk to your doc about your potassium before making major changes to your diet. Remember...
  23. I can't say that I disagree. I guess thats why I am looking for verifications. I needed someone to say "you are a brave soul". I typically don't have major symptoms but recently had a couple cramping episodes that I'm not used to and it made me start questioning a few areas of my routine. They are the same restaurants. There is one local establishment...
  24. My liver enzymes were about the same and dropped significantly over the course of six months on my gluten free diet.
  25. Be sure to cross reference your microwave popcorn. The popcorn is fine but its the extra ingredients one should keep an eye on. For example, I react to Kroger brand microwave popcorn and I looked it up in my 2013 Gluten Free Grocery Shopping Guide and its not listed, which means, I cannot have it. Also, some people still react to gluten-free oats, I'm...
