  1. Maybe I will should take some potassium pills and experiment.

Mord, you might want to check with a doctor before you do some experimenting. ;)

Here is some resourse information for you. I'm not sure how much information you will find about Wilson's Disease on a forum specific for Celiac Disease.

    Good luck.

  2. Tropical Sprue is regional and treatable and not an autoimmune response.:

    Open Original Shared Link

    [edit] Cause

The cause of tropical sprue is not known.[1] It has been suggested that it is caused by bacterial, viral, amoebal, or parasitic infection. Folic acid deficiency and rancid fat have also been suggested as possible causes. In a condition called coeliac (also: celiac) disease (also known as coeliac sprue), which has similar symptoms to non tropical sprue, the flattening of the villi and small intestine inflammation is caused by an autoimmune disorder.

    [edit] Affected Regions

The disease was first described by William Hillary[2] in 1759 in Barbados. Tropical sprue is endemic to India and southeast Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

    [edit] Treatment

Once diagnosed, tropical sprue can be treated by a course of the antibiotic tetracycline(Doxycycline) or Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim(Co-trimoxazole) and vitamins B12 and folic acid for at least 6 months.

    [edit] Prevention

Preventive measures include drinking only bottled water, brushing teeth, washing food, avoiding fruits washed with tap water (or consuming only peeled fruits, such as bananas and oranges), and altogether avoidance of travel to the affected regions.

    [edit] Prognosis

The prognosis for tropical sprue is excellent. It usually does not recur in patients who get it during travel to affected regions. The recurrence rate for natives is about 20%.

  3. I'm a quiter too

Knowing myself as I do...I kept a half/opened pack of cigs in my freezer. I alway knew they were there, so that I would not panic knowing I didn't have any in the house. I think it gave ME to power to not to smoke them. I threw them out a year and a half later. :D

    Welcome Raven!

  4. they fully admit on their site now that the beef flavoring in their fries contains wheat.

    .

In an effort of full disclosure by McD's, the fries have been independently tested and the level of gluten in the french fries is considered safe for people with Celiac to consume. The cross contamination risk is high, as in any fast food restaurant. We generally suggest people to choose for themselves. I choose too.

McD's french fries has been the single most discussed topic since the birth of this forum. A search will support that.

  5. I got my results from Enterolab today and they are positive. However, I do not understand the whole gene DQ thing. Here are my results:

    HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 1: 0302

    HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 2: 0301

    Serologic equivalent: HLA-DQ 3,3 (Subtype 8,7)

What does that make me? Am I DQ1? DQ3? I don't understand how to interpret them. Can you help?

Here is good, understandable information on gene testing (it can be very confusing):

  6. Both you and your son have a gluten sensitivity according to Enterolabs interpretation. The genes indicate that you MAY be at risk or predisposed to several autoimmune disorders, but not specifically to Celiac according to what I understand.

May people choose Enterolab as a piece of a puzzle to include serologic blood panel, endoscopy/biopsy exams and dietary results. Collective results, in some combination, can be diagnostic of Celiac Disease.

To answer your question, you should remain on a full gluten diet until you have exausted your testing options in order to achieve a diagnosis, if that is your direction.

If not, try the diet and see if your symtoms improve.

Here is a good article on genetic testing:

    https://www.celiac.com/articles/21567/1/Ten...ting/Page1.html

Bonfils, Quest and Enterolab only test for the beta subunit portions and therefore their test can miss part of a minor alpha subunit that carries a risk of Celiac disease. A negative DQ2 and DQ8 report from these labs may not necessarily be truly negative for the risk of Celiac disease.

  7. Hi,

I used to drink Carnation instant breakfast when I was running late, but it is not gluten free. Does anyone know of any good tasting gluten free instant breakfasts I can have instead? I am often running late in the morning. I don't have any problem (so far) with dairy so that isn't an issue. Thanks.

  8. Here is an interesting article regarding study tests vaccine-like therapy for Type 1 diabetes involving the immune system:

The article states "that scientists hope to control Type 1 diabetes by curbing the rogue immune cells that cause it. An injection revs up the subject's immune system, part of the a quest to create a vaccine-like therapy."

It goes on to state that "a "therapeutic vaccine" must shut down only the cells that erroneously attack a Type 1 diabetics, own pancreas. Body-wide immune suppression would leave patients vulnerable to other illnesses."

This sounds similar to the Celiac vaccine study in Australia.

  9. Here is a list of companies who will clearly list all forms of gluten (as in wheat, rye, barly, and malt). There is nothing hidden in natural flavors. Many of us tend to support these companies:

  10. Others are better with test results than I, but your results are certainly on the high side of negative. If you have symptoms consistent with a gluten intolerance and feel better on the gluten free diet, it is a good indicator that you have a gluten problem.

At this time, tests are not as accurate as we would like, but a positive dietary response can tell you a lot.

  11. I'll withhold personal comments about accuracy . . . I'm already in trouble!

My home health nurse is my "acid test" with regard to gluten-free safety. Her celiac is very severe, and her sensitivity to the slightest amount of gluten is very high. She has not been able to use stevia.

Are your claims that of Stevia containing gluten? I don't use the product, but I am sure that other would like to know. :)

This Stevia website claims it to be gluten free:

What is your concern regarding accuracy?

  12. I recently found out that the Stevia I have been using, which has Maltodextrin in it, is not gluten-free....which explains why I was much much better but not totally well. According to some lists if the Maltodextrin is manufactured in the US it is gluten-free. I discovered that the Stevia I have been using is from Columbia, so I went to their website to check it out and it is not gluten free....grrrrrrrrrr. I post this for those that might be using Stevia from other places. Please check it out. The brand is Erba Dolce, here is a link to a site that shows it is NOT gluten-free.

As mentioned, if a product WHICH IS IMPORTED into the US, is also required by law to list if wheat is a source in Maltodextrin. Barley, rye or malt are not required to be listed.

Do you know the the source of the gluten?
