Hi Sonia and Welcome:
You have found the best information around.
I am sorry about your son's diagnosis, but isn't it great that he can begin to heal without surgery or medication. A change of diet can get him on the road to good health and development.
The TENDENCY for Celiac is inherited. Twenty percent first degree relative will develop Celiac. Even if a person prosess the tell-tale Celiac genes, there is no guarantee that they will develop the disease. Perhaps, you might know someone in your family who might have had "tummy" problems.
Here are some essential links that will help you get through the early days:

The Celiac Disease Foundation and the Celiac Sprue Association have chapters in most all states. They can direct you to a local support group in your area. Or, if you would like to post your location, we can find someone near you.
I am certain you mind is spinning. We have all walked in your shoes, so please feel free to ask away. We are here to help you in any way.

This thread is over four years old.
I believe, currently Progresso Creamy Mushroom soup is still available. Not always easily found, but still available.
When I find it, I buy six or more cans.

How do you test for mercury toxicity?
-
nora posted an excellent answer. If by cheating and healing is hindered, then yes, absorption can be compromised due to uncontrolled Celiac.
-
Ok, I'm sure someone has already asked this but I searched like crazy and couldn't find anything.
Why isn't gluten one of the top allergens according to the FDA food labeling? From what I could find it looks like including people with celiac and gluten intolerance it must be as common as wheat, fish, peanut, soy, dairy, eggs and fish allergies. I know it
-
Probably not. Here the price sticker has the ingredients on the sticker. Don't know about there. They use flour as a binder in meats, especially ham.
I don't think I have heard of that practice in the US mushroom.

What have your doctors recommended?
-
Sounds like you have wonderful people around you, people who are used to working together to achieve a common goal.

Dylan,
We are not doctors. We can offer experience, but you should seek professional help. As said earlier, if you are not comfortable with the doctors you see now, find others.
A doctor can test for chemical imbalances. With a past suicide attempt and your current emotional state, you should be dealing with professionals. Sit down and try to talk to your parents about your concerns. Talk to someone you trust, until they hear you.
Your current emotional state may be due to gluten, msg, chemicals or something of greater concern, but this is something that a doctors should explore. An eliminating diet may not be your answer.
Before you explore on your own, please seek professional advise.

If you're going to a Japanese restaurant for the first time after gluten free and have not talked to the staff prior to eating... I would get steamed veggies and chicken with white rice. Bring your own gluten free soy sauce (LaChoy). There is always a risk for cross contamination and difficulty with a language barrier.
I think that you'll find that dining out takes a bit of research these days.

I found that the Trellis Restaurant at Market Square to be VERY accommodating. Check with the staff during off hours and make a reservation.
I was offered several recommendations and all were excellent. The chef was very knowledgeable and my entre arrive just as glamorous as my husbands.

Rice gives me gas and the big "D"and joint pain.Anybody else?Anymore info on this would helpful.
Rices (unseasoned) should not be gluten problem.
-
I don't think you should have any problems regarding gluten. Now, the tabasco flavor is HOT!
-
I think some members here have already scarfed about a thousand boxes already.
-
Now that's exciting news. If all IBS patients are screened for Celiac, the rate of diagnosed could sky rocket.
It could be a new day for research, pharmaceutical and product development.

Hi Kelly and Welcome!
You've found a great place here. Here is a wonderful link to the Celiac Survival Guide:

If an ingredient is not one of the eight allergens required by law to be listed, anything can hide in "natural flavors". There is no way to know, unless you contact the company.

If you haven't already, the internet is full of information on MSG. Here are a few.

I've always wondered how airborne gluten could be.
No you cannot absorb it through your skin but I'm almost positive you can absorb it through the sinuses.
When I started using the Microwave at work I had vision problems. Sinus swelling would cause some optic nerve problems. Happened 5-10 minutes after eating lunch.
Never any stomach problems at all but since its a anti-immune disease your body will attack it anywhere it finds it, which would be in the sinus if you've inhaled it.
Makes me wonder why if you get some in your lungs what happens.
If your taking a hot shower, can the soap material float with the steam and water vapor or is it heavier and fall to the ground?
Sounds like you may have a gluten allergy

Hi Lisa,
A recent article by Fasano suggests that celiac disease and the associated production of the cytokine zonulin may be the "mother" of other autoimmune disorders, so to speak. Here is a link to the abstract:

JoAnn
Wow JoAnne, it's a bit "heady" for me and I will have to read it about twenty more times in any attempt to understand it.
Could you imagine the scientific breakthrough if...
On another side note. I had a conversation with someone who mentioned a friend with Celiac Disease. She traveled to the Republic of Georgia. And in this very remote section of the world, she was able to eat the bread and wheat products without issue (and always aware of her particular symptoms).
The wheat there has been grown and harvested, without genetic engineering and organically, for centuries, in it's most natural form. Another thought to ponder.
Don't mean to get off topic.

K.
But what was is not made clear, is what came first, other (not to include Celiac) autoimmune diseases or (as you so carefully demonish, but is a recognized scientific term) Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance. It is widely known that other autoimmune disorders can be found in association with each other. But, is gluten the "cause/trigger" of Hashimoto's, or is Hashimoto's the "cause/trigger" of Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance? Does the removal of gluten relieve symptoms of all autoimmune diseases?
The chicken or the egg so to speak. I'm just throwing out some questions. I certainly don't have the answers. Supported research links, I would find interesting.
