I just think it's funny that someone starts a new thread on this subject like, once a week now.
Dave, I do think your point about additives and preservatives causing symptoms is very legitamate. People should take that into consideration when consuming processed foods.
But seriously, how many times in a row does this same conversation about gluten in shampoo (etc.) have to take place on this board?
Everyone who wants to use gluten-containing shampoo is welcome to do so. Everyone who wants to use gluten-free shampoo....is welcome to do so. Why is everyone so sensitive about this subject and so determined to convince others that their way is the right way? If I were to choose tomorrow to purchase a gluten-containing hand cream, it would not bother me personally that people I know on this board choose to stick to gluten-free hand cream.
And yes, rules, regulations, ingredients in products, labeling laws etc. etc. vary greatly from country to country. A specific brand of toothpaste in Ireland, for example, could have completely different ingredients than the exact same brand of toothpaste in the US.
Just thought I would use colors and weird sizes to go along with the original tone of the thread LOL.
Ugh okay I'm done now.
I am in full agreement, Mango. Your point has a great deal of merit and was well said.
This forum is full of valuable information and personal testimonies, but it is not doctrine. It's important to weight your options and make your own informed choices.

Perhaps you can include in your questionnaire that you suspect Celiac (describe) and currently in the process of pursuing medical treatment/testing.
-
Sounds like your mother is in denial herself. None of this is something she has caused. Many of us a genetically susseptible to many things and in my case itis Celiac. I don't blame my parents and if my children someday are diagnosed with Celiac, I would do my best to help them adjust to whatever their needs may be.
Kindly remind you mother, that there are no perfect children... physically, mentally, socially or intellectually. But you are her child with all the good and the bad.

I have the red, bleary allergy eyes and the under eye circles. Both combined together really make me look sick.
It does sound like an allergy of some sort. Are there any culprits this season in your neck of the woods?

Well, I was doing well (previous post).
I still haven't smoked, but I take it back. I now have thought about having 1 cigarette. I almost lost it this morning (frickin' doctors). I guess this is when it's hard. I'm going to hang tough (I hope).
Determination.
Think how the aftermath will taste in your mouth....eww. But, yes, I talk big now. Hang in there babe. I need you to be strong so you can tell me how to do it.

Sandy,
I too hope you find some answers soon. You both have been through so much. I'll keep you in my thoughts and sending well wishes.

Hey Bravie:
Always remember, you are not alone. We number 15,000 people here on this site and we have all been where you are. This is the best place you can come for information and support.
I know how hard it can be for family not to be supportive and especially your mother. That must be hard to deal with.
Celiac CAN be very overwhelming in the beginning. But it is very do able even in a shared household. You seen to be doing well under the circumstances. Continue to do the best you can and look forward to the time that you can feel 100%.
On a side note, many here have been on antidepressants for some time and now that they are gluten free, the need no longer exists.
If you have any need for support or just want to vent, there are a lot of really great people here.

Today in North Carolina the thermometer indicates 100 degrees (in the shade) and the relative heat is 112 degrees.
Last night we had our first thunderstorm (or rain of any kind) in a months time. It's awful!
How about you?

Yes, I had heard may people speak of the dark circles diminishing after some time on the diet, myself included.
Since two years on the diet, I have had many people come up to me and tell me how much better I look. Guess they didn't have the nerve to tell me how BAD is really looked, back then

Hello,
It sounds like your doctor is on top of things. You are one of the lucky ones.
I have had both proceedures and there is nothing to it.
But, just a word of advise....do NOT start the diet until all your tests are over. Continue to eat gluten foods and dairy. You want the optimum opportunity to detect any damage due to potential Celiac.

Wait... Lame Advertisement has gluten??? I was going to ask my doctor about it! Anyone else have gluten reactions?
I quit smoking for 14 years... and then last summer I "vacation" smoked after several glasses of wine. What a dope. It's been almost a year and I promised myself and hubby that I'd quit before we moved (from PA to AR) later this summer.
I called Pfizer and talked to a Lame Advertisement Representative. She assured me that Lame Advertisement had NO gluten ingrediences.
I started today. Day one! Quiting day is next Monday. Wish me strength, determination, and a continued hopefull attitude.

Hey Jenny,
Glad to have you back with us again. You have been through the worst, so everything else is a down hill slide.
A speedy recovery!!!

I have found myself in my car, stopped at a stop light waiting for the light to turn RED. Scary!

Hi everyone!
O.k....here's my problem: I usually don't buy any pre-mixed flours, convenience food, etc. (Mainly because of financial reasons). I cook by recipes, etc. Well, I purchased Arrowhead Mills Pancake and baking mix this week. (I've been craving good pancakes and can't seem to make them). Anyway, these pancakes did not turn out yummy at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do with the rest of the mix? I certainly won't be making any more pancakes, but surely there is some kind of other use for this mix. I'm not throwing it away.
So...you guys are so helpful and creative, I thought maybe you could offer some alternative recipes besides just pancakes and/or muffins.
Thanks so much! -Julie
Julie,
I think that Angie makes fried onion rings with pancake batter. Her picture looked wonderful. It's on my to do list.

Actually Tom, if the truth were known, I should call him Dad - right Nik?
Do you like that senario better?
We don't refer to each other as Mom and Dad, other than references in talking to our children. There IS something very odd about that.
-
Oh goodness no. Vinegar quality differs. White vinegar might not differ so much, but that stuff is so harsh, I only use it for cleaning. Apple cider vinegar definitely is different by brand, as is red wine vinegar. And balsamic... don't get me started on finding a good balsamic! I would try a couple different brands to find where your tradeoff of cost/quality lies.
I was thinking along the line of distilled whites. Balsamic gets better with the price tag.
-
Nope, six! One was adopted though.
Every one was planned.
I'd have had more if my health didn't decline like it did.
I had two until my husband retired and two became three.
In a "manly" voice "Mom, where is this, where is that". Oh the joys of retirement.

For them, it is a cure-all ... but at least there's only one thing on their lists of things they want from us ... if we take care of that one thing, they'll deal with all the garbage we dish out. Amazing, actually.
Sheesh Carla, no wonder you have five kids.

Can someone tell me which mustard is gluten-free? I had it in my mind that distilled vinegar was a gluten culprit, but people have said french's is okay. What about dijon. A recipe in the Gluten Free Bible calls for it, but I don't know which one to get. It's found nowhere on my whole foods list.
Distilled vinegar should be no problem. The distillation process is said to remove any gluten elements. When in doubt, Kraft will always list if a product contains wheat, barley and malt.

Hi All,
I've been gluten-free since 3 March 2007 and on the whole feel a billion times better than before. My D is totally gone and most days I have clear brain (no fog) and lots of energy, etc. But the last month I've had more tired days than I'd like, along with some 3-4 day headaches and stuff. I suspect I've cross contaminated myself somehow because I'm still on the learning curve. But I'm kind of stumped. I feel like I'm getting CC'd at home (I never feel ill after eating out).
I checked all my skin care stuff (i don't wash my hair and i made my own soap from scratch, and i don't wear makeup or anything besides burts bees lip balm from a new container).
I replaced all my wooden and plastic kitchen utensils, and consigned my beloved cast iron skillet to the basement.
I also took all the gluten containing foods out of my house (I live alone so I can be 100% gluten-free).
I'm using my same stainless steel silverware, ceramic plates, glass glasses, and stainless steel pots. Is it possible these are the culprit? I hate to replace every single appliance/piece of cookware in my kitchen (I already got a new skillet and stick blender thingy) but I'm at a loss.
I keep my knives (another item I don't want to replace if possible--good quality Henckels) in a wooden drawer that is part of a wooden butcher block in my kitchen. I haven't replaced the butcher block, but I use a (new) plastic cutting board on top since I assume the wood is filled with gluten residue in the cuts. I cleaned out the drawers when I went gluten-free, but is it possible there's some in the corners that is getting out somehow?
I'm just frustrated, because I can't tell if this is just normal ups and downs--I know it can take months to years to totally heal, OR if I'm unneccesarily suffering because of CC that I could take care of. I'm kind of driving myself crazy obsessing about how I might have CC'd myself (in case you couldn't tell that from the post...) Is there something else obvious that I'm missing???
Thanks!!!
Yes, it's normal to have some ups and downs while the healing continues. Have you considered that you may have a problem with dairy. For many people newly diagnosed with Celiac, it is often recommended that they go dairy light or eliminate it altogether until the healing is well on it's way and then gradually reintroduce it down the road. A dairy reaction is very similar to a gluten reaction.
