  1. My younger son was diagnosed by blood test and biopsy when he was 5.5. He had VERY low iron and he first had a blood test in November that discovered the anemia. Then another blood test in December to see if the liquid iron was working. Then in January, and then in June he had another blood test only this time they took 5 vials. Then he had the biopsy. After...
  2. Sasha try Safeway or Sobeys (IGA). Look in the produce section, though. They are refrigerated before use as well as after. They won't be with Kraft or on the salad dressing aisle.
  3. Hey Judy, found this in the FAQ on the website: Availability I am in the US and can’t find one of your products at the supermarket. Can you help? At present, certain Renée’s Gourmet products are available at selected US stores only. We are currently working to get more Renée’s Gourmet products listed in more areas of the US. Please email us at cser...
  4. Thanks for the kind words. Sometimes I feel like a terrible mom for saying that. On the other hand, at Ty's follow-up about 3 weeks ago, I asked the doctor to do a blood test, so I could see how the diet was working and he said he wouldn't do it. He said, I can look at him and see that the diet is working. He's gaining weight, slowly, but he's gaining, his...
  5. I couldn't find any! We went to Superstore, Safeway and Co-op. I didn't even see the rice flour at Superstore, but they have Asian rice flour one aisle over. At both Safeway and Co-op, I found the Club House rice flour but not potato flour. It's still listed on the website. I guess you could call and find out if it's been discontinued or find a store here...
  6. No. We are a family that rarely (touch wood) gets sick. The occasional cold or sniffles. A 24 hour upset stomach/vomity kind of day - gone the next day only once in a while. Once every couple of years my husband gets a flu that morphs into bronchitis that lasts for a month or two, but it's a pretty mild bronchitis compared to my Mom. It's peculiar to me...
  7. Thanks for the tip. I'll be down to one boy for a while this aft and I'll try to get out to the Superstore and Safeway re: where to find the Club House Potato flour.
  8. You don't say how much he weighs. How long has he been gluten-free? My six year old son weighs about 38 lbs. Since he started the gluten-free diet, he's gained 3 or 4. Last August at diagnosis, he was 33/34 lbs. The dietician wanted to up his caloric intake too, and we're having a hard time with it. He just doesn't eat a lot. He's never been a big eater before...
  9. Safeway and Superstore, but it's not exactly with the other flour, or the Bob's Red Mill displays, the Club House is (trying to remember) might be closer to the pudding/pie filling section of the baking aisle. Also, my Mother-in-law found her potato flour-also Club House brand at Co-op. I'll try to remember next time I go to the store to look at what it...
  10. Rusla, I was going to ask about the salt, too. Is it seasoned salt, or table salt? I'm sure you've asked about new suppliers, equipment, oil, etc.
  11. Isn't Celiac villous atrophy of any kind, not just total villous atrophy? Ty's biopsy indicated sections with normal villi and others with "severely blunted villi consistent with Celiac Disease", which I took to mean he was diagnosed reasonably quickly. Well, quickly enough that he didn't have total villous atrophy. Meanwhile, there is a teacher at Ty...
  12. Hey Karen, I got that issue a couple of weeks ago and wrote to the magazine. I said that I thought it was great that they were promoting Celiac and gluten-free recipes, but that I wished the article had focused less on the "classic" symptoms, mentioned some symptoms kids/adults might have: irritability, anemia, brain fog, etc. and told them to keep up the...
  13. Thanks!
  14. Ditto to Felidae's answer. I use Jamieson Naturals and so do my kids. The bottles of multivitamins have a big list on the label that there's no gluten/dairy/soy/etc.
  15. Carrie's right. All sauces gluten free EXCEPT Teriyaki. Then it goes on to the next item. Pam is gluten-free EXCEPT the kind that says "with flour" or "with wheat" or something like that in the title of the product. ConAgra is a company that will always put in bold: Contains: Soy, or Contains: Wheat, Contains: place top 8 allergen here. They just have a poor...
  16. VH Plum Sauce. We use this. It's more for dipping, but it's available everywhere. (Only in Canada, eh? Pity.) Oops. Edited to say that I don't know if it's Dairy free, but it's Gluten free. It's manufactured by ConAgra. I couldn't find an ingredient list on the website, and I'm at work, so I can't check my bottle.
  17. Can you not find Club House Potato Flour on the baking aisle? Club House is owned by McCormick. Maybe it's only in Canada. It's in an Orange and yellow box and with it will be rice flour and minute tapioca. I don't have the vaguest idea what minute tapioca is...I get Tapioca starch from Superstore (Loblaws). As for the difference between starch and flour...
  18. NO! They are NOT the same thing. Potato starch is very fine, like tapioca starch. Potato flour looks more like all-purpose wheat flour. I can't really describe it very well. The starch is bright white, and the flour looks like it's not such a brilliant white and it's not as finely ground. Tapioca starch and flour and Tapioca starch flour are the same....
  19. Try adding a 1/2 tsp of paprika. My batter for deep fried fish is egg whites, sweet rice flour, cornstarch and paprika, and it's the paprika that gives it the nice colour. Fish Batter 2 egg whites 1/3 cup cornstarch 1/2 tsp paprika (helps the batter turn a lovely light golden brown) 1/4 cup sweet rice flour Beat egg whites until stiff, but not dry...
  20. I would say that I am spiritual, but not religious...and this not allowing a gluten-free communion is a good indication of why I'm not religious. Wouldn't God WANT you to be healthy, wouldn't God, being a good Christian (whatever that is), allow you to consume whatever communion cracker/wafer/bread is safe for you to consume? It's the guys who say they are...
  21. Actually, she's my Mom's friend, I haven't seen her in 20 years (she lives across the country...my sister sees her once in a while). She's 70 years old or thereabouts. Her daughter is around 42 and decided that she wouldn't ever have kids, because of the NF. The son (if it's the right one I'm thinking about...she has 3 boys) has 2 kids I believe, and I'm...
  22. If you're in Canada, try Goldaskitchen.com.
  23. Key, how did they diagnose the NF1? Cafe au lait marks at birth? I know a lady with it, and two of her four kids have it, but I don't think they knew about the two kids until they were over 20 years old and started to get the tumours.
  24. Rusla, that's great! We don't go out too much anymore, it's tricky with a 6 year old celiac. We pretty much stick to the Crowfoot Chianti, but I'll make a mental note for next time we want a treat. Thanks for the info. Have you tried that Chinese place south of the Foothills? I think it's on Parkdale or whatever Memorial turns into about 6 blocks east...
  25. Hi Patti, Can you have corn? The following flour blend calls for tapioca, but I wonder if you could use 1 1/2 cups of potato starch and then replace the tapioca with cornstarch. Carol Fenster's sorghum/corn flour blend. 1 1/2 cups sorghum flour 1 1/2 cups potato starch or cornstarch 1 cup tapioca flour 1/2 cup white corn flour I have never...
