  1. With regards to Trix, check the last 5 or 6 ingredients on the label. I suspect you'll find wheat starch. I only mention that, because my husband was in Colorado (we're from Canada) a month ago and he emailed me the label for Trix, he was going to buy some and bring it back. The last or second last line said wheat starch. Open Original Shared Link Wheat...
  2. Slightly off topic here - What is the white dusty stuff on the "old fashioned" gum? By that I mean soft gum, not the chiclety kind that everyone makes (so I can't find the good soft cinnamon dentyne anymore). I know that Dentyne, Trident and Wrigley's are all supposed to be gluten-free, so what's that dust made of?
  3. I use sorghum a lot for Ty's cookies and cakes. I use Carol Fenster's sorghum/corn flour blend. 1 1/2 cups sorghum flour 1 1/2 cups potato starch or cornstarch 1 cup tapioca flour 1/2 cup white corn flour I have never found white corn flour, but the yellow is pretty cheap at Superstore or Walmart, so that's what I use. This flour blend is good...
  4. OFF TOPIC-Richard, you're beautiful...not at all like I imagined.
  5. I'm 39 and I'm not Celiac, and the words "thingy" and "whachamacallit" are two of the most frequently used words in my vocabulary.
  6. We don't really buy anything labelled gluten-free except pasta, cereal, cereal bars and flour. Everything else I've made from scratch (it hasn't always been edible, but I cringe at spending $7 for 4 hamburger buns). The sheet the association gave me said something about spices. There's only one 6 year old eating the specially labelled gluten-free stuff, so...
  7. Hi All, I have a question that Revenue Canada couldn't really answer for me. It was regarding claiming something that I would buy anyway (cornstarch) but the quantity of what I am purchasing has changed. Example: in the past, I might buy 2 boxes of cornstarch a year, but since August, I've bought about 10. When you look at the price per box $1.77/50...
  8. My younger son is the celiac in our family. He has a follow up with pediatric GI doctor March 7th, and I am going to ask for a blood test. Ty doesn't have any symptoms (that I am aware of - I can't feel what he feels) so for me the results of the blood test will at least indicate if we've been doing a good job keeping him gluten-free. Depending on the results...
  9. I thought and endoscopy and biopsy are kind of the same. Isn't the procedure an endoscopy and the samples they take are the biopsy ? I don't get it.
  10. Hello Calgarians! Just a quick note to say that Amaranth (on John Laurie Blvd & Arbour Lake Something, just past Nose Hill Drive Northwest Calgary) is having a sale on certain gluten-free items. $3.79 for a box of Envirokids cereal bars, and some of their cereal is on sale also. If you don't usually shop there, I've discovered that the Tinkyada...
  11. The usual price at Co-op is $5.29, $4.99 at Safeway, I've never seen them at Sobey's or Superstore. Ty usually has one for an afterschool snack. We took a couple of boxes over to Gramma's house in case of a snack emergency as well (like when everyone else is having cookies and she doesn't have any gluten-free). I was quite impressed with the health food store...
  12. Thanks Karen! I snagged the box while the big kids were on the ice and I figured the same thing - it's Kraft, nothing suspicious so he was happy...even though the other kids were having Rice Krispie squares, and he'd already eaten his gluten-free Envirokids bar while they were playing. He kept saying, Mom, I'm hungry. He'd already had a bag of popcorn...
  13. Hi All, Are Kool-Aid Jammers drinks gluten-free? I checked the Kraft Canada gluten-free list, and Jammers aren't part of the beverage section. I don't have a package right now, but I know after hockey today the drink part of the snack will be Jammers and will be offered to my gluten-free son. Thanks in advance.
  14. Here's one I've used for fish batter. For what it's worth, my sister tried it with all-purpose flour and didn't like it. I guess the trick is the sweet rice flour. Fish Batter 2 egg whites 1/3 cup cornstarch 1/2 tsp paprika (helps the batter turn a lovely light golden brown) 1/4 cup sweet rice flour Beat egg whites until stiff, but not dry. Sift...
  15. Thanks! Maybe Tuesday after volunteering at school and going to the off-leash I'll try them. (Or maybe I'll have a nap)
  16. Karen, Guacamole (in Canada) are gluten-free. I gotta call Frito-Lay one of these days. The Dorito Cheese/Nacho cheese or whatever has wheat, but the Dorito Rollito Cheese or Nacho Cheese was gluten-free. I found exactly one bag at Walmart right after Ty was diagnosed, and have never seen them since. I wonder if they quit making them. And what was the difference...
  17. Holy Cow!! 6 months into Ty's diet and he's gained 4 lbs. I thought that was good. He eats at McDonald's at most twice a month (but we're in Canada, and I saw a post somewhere from Canadian Karen - I think - that had a quote about how Canadian McD fries are okay). Ty is 6 and weighs 37lbs now. 33 when we started the diet in August 2005. Meanwhile, his brother...
  18. Brownies!? Will you post the recipe? I haven't found a good one yet. Thanks. Ditto for Smunkeemom's biscuits. Will you please post or pm the recipe?
  19. Yes, that's what I meant, or if you have to comply with certain guidelines to advertise as "gluten-free". The whole CYA mentality. Make sure all the i's are crossed and t's are dotted, if you know what I mean. As far as the newsletter, do you mean the Suburban Journal? It might not be a bad idea to get an ad or notice of some kind in the school newsletter...
  20. We're in Canada, so we don't have this 504 thing I read about all the time. What we have is an elementary school with no fridges (except in the staff room) and no microwaves (except in the staff room). There is no lunch room or cafeteria. 90% of the kids attending stay for lunch. We all pack lunches with ice packs and/or thermoses. Everyday (except the...
  21. Not necessarily. If the damage is like my son's - only in certain areas, they might not get a sample of the damage. Depends on how many samples they take. Check on the blood tests they used and maybe send a pm to KaitiUSA or Nini. Kaiti seems to be quite well informed on blood test vs biopsy and often says that a biopsy can confirm the diagnosis of celiac...
  22. My now 6 year old son had a biopsy in August 2005. He was 5 3/4 at the time. From what I understand, it was a piece of gluten-free cake. He and the nurse went off to the surgery, he was given a general anaesthetic, and an hour later he was back in the ward eating a popsicle. He had no problem with it, didn't complain about a sore throat or anything and was...
  23. Hello Torontonians, Torontoites or Easterners. I am trying to find out if China Lily Soy Sauce is gluten-free. The ingredients are: Soya based hydrolyzed plant protein water sugar salt caramel starch spices sodium benzoate I can't find any info on the internet and I can't find an 800 #. I have no desire to spend a lot of $$ on long distance...
  24. Hi, I'm in Calgary, too. About the soap...all Colgate/Palmolive products are gluten-free. That's toothpaste, dishsoap, laundry detergent and hand soap. We use Soft Soap liquid soap. Open Original Shared Link That's a link to a Canadian list of gluten-free products. Also try this website: Open Original Shared Link Here's the link to the Calgary Celiac...
  25. We've never even SEEN Cocoa Pebbles (or Fruity, for that matter) in Canada. In fact, my husband is in Aspen, Colorado this week so he bought some Cocoa & Fiesta Fruity Pebbles to bring back. (I must admit that I rarely venture out of NW Calgary, so that may explain it.)
