  1. To understand celiac disease further and to print off a list of symptoms and recommended tests to share with doctors, check out the University of Chicago's celiac website: Open Original Shared Link My heart goes out to you and your family!
  2. I understand! We all do! Karen's advice is perfect! I went on a mini-vacation with my friend and our daughters. They wanted Japanese food and the restaurant was not gluten free. I ate before I left the hotel room and ordered a drink at the restaurant. We still had a great time. I was not hungry and I saved $30. Later, we walked around and I had...
  3. You have had to been consuming gluten for 12 weeks prior to the blood test and two weeks before a biopsy. Check out the University of Chicago's celiac website for more answers: Open Original Shared Link Keep us posted on your progress and I hope you are feeling better soon!
  4. 40 is way too low and dangerous. Anything over 140 cause cause diabetic complications (vision, neuropathies, circulation, etc.). Read up about diabetes here: Open Original Shared Link This was written by a type 2 but it will help you get started. You should cut carbs now! Didn't the ER doc recommend cutting back sugar significantly? You need to...
  5. Whoever you find, be sure to print off all the testing and symptom information from the University of Chicago's celiac website and discuss it with your new GP. Mention your recent ER visit and that the doc was not able to test for celiac disease and suggested follow-up with a GP or Gastro. Go in with a notepad and a list of questions. Do plenty of research...
  6. I can relate. I think we all have been there. Avoiding gluten is such a learning curve, but it doable. I think it is worse when you have glutened someone else. My husband was gluten free years before me. I glutened him plenty of times! Even with my experience, I have glutened myself! Grieving is a given. It is a lot to give up and I am not talking...
  7. Everyone begged for Mexican food and that is what they are getting!
  8. Glad you are better! I was tested for SIBO when I had my endoscopy and colonoscopy. I am sorry that you had to suffer for so long. The message for all is not to give up! It is not all in your head!
  9. Hashi's can be very unstable. Over the past 20 years, I have had some stability that lasted for years and then wild fluctuations. Have you talked to family members (e.g. grandmas)? Does he look like anyone in the family at that age regarding weight? I say this because my cousin was like Olive Oil (or just released from a concentration camp) and...
  10. Maybe you have a milk allergy and not just lactose intolerance. Milk has always affected me my whole life. Intestinal problems and nasal issues with minutes of consuming it. Use an alternative. Maybe you should try coffee made at home and drink it plain. Yucky I know, but you have to test foods in their simple forms otherwise too many variables. Like...
  11. Consider mold in your house. Your rash? I love Tea Tree oil. It is great for fungus and bacteria. Might be worth trying. My daughter uses it to treat her acne and says it works better than the commercial products I have purchased. I use it too for my nails and face. I wash with tea tree oil soap too. Though she is young and I do not want to pull...
  12. I would definitely go gluten free and maybe even further by eliminating processed foods or going Paleo. There is a lot to research! Keep us posted on your progress and let us hope that diet can lower your antibodies and slow/stop the progression!
  13. Depends on your insurance. Can a friend or family help you through the diagnostic process? It hard to handle this on your own. Your local urgent care should be able to order the tests, but again, it depends on your insurance.
  14. I have taught water aerobic for over 20 years. I have had many members who have had knee replacement surgery and have been very glad that they did the surgery! One lady did both at the same time and had to go to a rehab hospital during her recovery. She would not recommend that to anyone! Be sure the hospital is knowledgeable about gluten free. I...
  15. Take some credit too! Congrats!
  16. But what is the treatment? I know that high levels of anti-GAD antibodies with corresponding high blood glucose levels can indicate LADA (type1 diabetes) and then insulin/diet is the treatment.
  17. Welcome! Here are some newbie tips: https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/91878-newbie-info-101/ Let us know your biopsy results. You do not have to be thin and wasting away to have celiac disease. Read this from the University of Chicago for more celiac disease info: https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/91878-newbie-info-101/
  18. Have you posted on a dialectic website? Since anti-GAD antibodies are also linked to type 1 diabetes. I am glad you are finding relief on the gluten-free diet. Be careful of cross contamination. Check out our newbie section for more tips as gluten is hidden in so many places! https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/91878-newbie-info-101/
  19. Remember, celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder and NOT an allergy. With Celiac when you ingest even a tiny bit of gluten, it sets off an autoimmune reaction throughout your whole body that can last for weeks. There are over 300 symptoms, but there is usually intestinal damage. Allergies can cause symptoms like itchy skin or eyes, swelling etc. ...
  20. I bet the ER did not run a celiac blood panel. Follow-up with your GP/PCP for testing or a gastro referral. High blood sugar does occur when you are stressed and being in the ER feeling awful will compound the stress. That should be re-tested after fasting for 8 to 12 hours by your regular doctor. I would ask for an A1c test too. That will track your...
  21. Awful waffle? Are you sure you didn't get food poisoning? Sorry, but that would not have been one of my last gluteny meals! Maybe some BBQ with fries made in an un-dedicated fryer with banana pudding! Seriously, I am not there and do not have all the facts (not to mention that I am not a doctor), I hope you can figure it all out!
  22. Wow, luckily I am on the Westcoast! But my family lives in Georgia. Will be there this summer. Anyway, did you see the link to the University of Chicago's website? You can share that with the ER doc. Chances are he'll refer you to a Gastroentrologist for further follow-up and testing. You have to verify that all meds are gluten free. Talk to...
  23. Testing for celiac disease on a Saturday night? Are you in the ER? I hope you are okay!
  24. One week without gluten should be okay......
