  1. It happens. Believe me, it happens. I was lucky that most of my dumb mistakes affected my husband. By the time my diagnosis rolled around, I had the gluten-free diet and label reading down. I was the gluten police! Which is bad, because my husband is not that careful still after 13 years! Yikes!
  2. Well, I don't think you had enough biopsies in your small intestine. Let's face it. The surface area of your intestines is the size of a tennis court! A lot can be missed. Maybe where the GI saw flattening, he accidentally picked a intact spot to biopsy. Who knows? I have had food allergies forever! The same ones run in my family (and no, those...
  3. No. I was diagnosed with a few food allergies and lots of inhalant ones many years ago. I avoided these for a few years. Later, I was able to add eggs back into my diet, but only baked in cookies, etc. Thinking that I have been feeling pretty darn good these last few weeks (aside from a hyperthyroid), I ate an egg for the first time in 20 years! I soft...
  4. Oh, I like this advice. Nystatin never did anything for me and Diflucan is systemic and can be hard on your liver. The G. violet makes a mess! I would give this a try.
  5. Read the newbie thread under the "Coping" section. Your mom has to really commit to the gluten-free diet. Cross contamination is a big problem at restaurants or even in your own home if you have gluten eaters. My daughter has to eat gluten-free and she does not have celiac disease. She eats gluten at school, etc. Later, if your own symptoms get worse...
  6. My husband went gluten free 13 years ago at the advice of my allergist and his GP. It would be much easier if he had received an official diagnosis, but he didn't and he's doing great. My cousin, tested negative for both blood and biopsies. She went gluten free because it makes her feel good and she already knows her mom has an issue with gluten and I...
  7. Okay, I am not a doctor not an expert of anything….. How many biopsies were taken? Have you really been gluten-free? It's such a huge learning curve. Take a look at the Newbie thread located under the "Coping" section of this forum. You may be still consuming small amounts of gluten via cross contamination (cc). Yes, cc is serious issue for u...
  8. It might not be celiac disease, but she could still react to gluten. She responded well in the past going gluten free, right? The proof is in the diet. Like Lisa said, the others items might resolve on a gluten free diet. It is worth a try and costs nothing if you stick to whole foods. My cousin, an adult, tested negative in both blood and biopsy. She...
  9. Yeah, I went on Hormone replacement to stop my 30 day periods that dropped my hemoglobin levels so low that I could not breathe well. It worked (and I did not need a hysterectomy that my GYN. Was hoping for!) I took iron and then my ferritin level increased to just within the normal range. Hemoglobin always is just below range due to genetic anemia...
  10. Do not fall for the old heavy menstrual bleeding routine! That and a genetic anemia masked my celiac disease. I mean it could be related, but maybe not. I was diagnosed last year, but my husband was not. He went gluten-free 13 years ago at the advice of my allergist and his GP. The proof of his intolerance occurred with the strict avoidance of gluten...
  11. Who knows? You said that you tested negative to the celiac blood panel. Do you have the test results? Many folks do not get a complete panel. I ask because it is much easier maintaining a gluten-free diet with a formal diagnosis. Then there is never a doubt or cheating -- 95% adherence to the diet is meaningless for those with actual celiac disease...
  12. It is really hard to stick to the gluten-free diet without a formal diagnosis, but I understand the lack of insurance. Two weeks is not long enough. Many of us take months to years to heal. Everyone heals differently. Read the newbie thread under the coping section, learn about the risks of cross contamination and have patience. I am formally diagnosed...
  13. I would get another opinion. Get copies of all test results to present them to the new GI.
  14. How long have you been gluten-free? My anxiety has diminished significantly (ask my family) in the year I have been gluten-free. Gluten can mess with your head too -- not just your gut! Sorry, that no one has responded. You can check glutenfreedrugs.com.
  15. But a cheap meter from Walmart and test yourself. give yourself piece of mind for less than $30. Check out YouTube to see how to do it. Visit Blood Sugar 101 to learn more about diabetes, what are acceptable glucose numbers, how to test, and how to change your diet. Really? Telling you to eat potatoes and pasta? It sounds like they are not worried...
  16. Have you asked for a HIDA scan to check the efficiency of your gallbladder? I never had classic GB symptoms except for pain (passed out and I got diarrhea) and it was never where my gallbladder was located. It worked on and off since I was a teen. I finally hit 0% functionality and it got infected. I never had gallstones. It was the infection that got...
  17. Not enough calories! I consume over 1800! I have to have enough energy to run, swim, and ride. That means eating hearty meals. Here is what I eat on a daily basis and note that I am also diabetic: Breakfast: salmon, green beans with some crumbled bacon and olive oil, coffee with coconut butter added for extra fat calories Lunch: Salad with veggies...
  18. Like I said, some prepared foods may be naturally gluten free, but there could be a risk of contamination. You just never know. When in doubt, I google the product seeking responses from those who have celiac disease. I call the manufacturer. If the response is intelligent, I will give the product a try. If not, I experiment on my husband. He has...
  19. Thanks, I will try to catch a few.
  20. That is very low for a ferritin level! He is not absorbing iron well enough to store it. I am not a doctor, but my ferritin was 2 and despite iron supplements, I could not increase that number until I went gluten free and started to heal. I have plenty of iron stores now and am no longer anemic. Being anemic deprives you of oxygen -- even to your brain...
  21. Lesson learned: everything in moderation! Try canned salmon as it has less contaminant, especially if you are in a jam and can not cook. Look up the safe fish list for more suggestions.
  22. Karen is right -- you are either gluten free or not. My only celiac disease symptom was anemia and I was shocked that my biopsy revealed moderate to severe intestinal damage.
  23. I think you are still getting glutened. It can take weeks to heal from just one exposure. And if you keep getting exposed....... Did you get a chance to read the newbie thread? One suggestion is to eat whole foods prepared by your hands. Even though you think your salad is fine at your fav restaurant, the chances of cross contamination are very high...
