  1. Wow! I never knew that! Seriously give up dairy in all forms and see if it helps. Dairy can actually cause intestinal villi damage per the University of Chicago's Celiac website. So, it is not always gluten! But I think it is also not that common either. I have been on a low carb, high fat diet to control my blood sugar for two months. Yes, it...
  2. They make cheese from almond milk? I have never seen it, though I do not exactly browse the cheese section for new products!
  3. I am allergic to milk and I still am (casein, a protein). It is not a lactose issue. I think the ability to regain a lactose tolerance depends on the severity of damage. Remember, it can take a couple years for complete healing from what I have gathered on this forum. Not to mention that as everyone ages they tend to develop lactose intolerance whether...
  4. I use Pamela's AP blend. I hear K A. Is good, but Bobs is beanie. How long have you been gluten-free? It helps to avoid baked goods for a while to forget what wheat-based products taste like. However, my gluten eating family can not taste the difference when I bake apple spice or chocolate mayonnaise cupcakes with homemade frosting. My old toll house...
  5. I agree with Karen's suggestions. I am hosting Easter and this year I am allowing a cross sweet bread and rye in the backyard. There's a dedicated table for sandwich making. My FIL is being condiments from his frig. We will go first thru the gluten-free Buffett. I am holding back some of the food. I made a bunch and I want the leftovers. Better to...
  6. Here are two of my favorite tips to speed healing: 1. Do not eat outside of the house until you are feeling well or have this gluten-free diet down pat. There will be days that you just do not want to cook. My fast food is Costco chicken, frozen veggies, and green salad. I also freeze meals to have on hand. Simple foods are best until your gut has...
  7. Rest, drink lots of water and be patient! Read the newbie section as it contains valuable tips. I agree -- no eating out until she feels better and you get this all down.
  8. Welcome! Be sure to read the newbie thread about going gluten free. The tips are invaluable! Since it is a holiday weekend, I am not sure you will get a good response from parents of small children. So please be patient! I did test my daughter who is 13 and she did not have any symptoms at all. Amazingly, she was negative and both of us have gluten...
  9. I would get the biopsy. It will help confirm a diagnosis and create a reference point for future testing. I was just barely positive on my blood test, but had moderate to severe damage. An endoscopy can detect other issues like an ulcer, etc. Plus, it may convince others in your family to get tested.. Not all celiacs have GI issues. I did not! I...
  10. I am one of those with celiac who just had anemia as a symptom (reflecting back I had some anxiety that I attributed to perimenopause), but there are others who had severe intestinal damage and NO Gastrointestinal symptoms. They went in for testing because a relative was diagnosed. Since you have been suffering for all this time without a firm diagnosis...
  11. I tossed the few Teflon pans that I had because they had a few scratches. I kept my stainless and baked my cast iron pans in the clean cycle of the oven and then re-seasoned them. I also tossed all my old cake, tart and cupcake pans because they had tiny crevices and I was not confident about cleaning them. Same goes for my wooden spoons, silicone pancake...
  12. You rock, girl! Persistence pays off! Here's to better health!
  13. So nice! Don't take it the wrong way that I am against chickens. Guess who always did the pet sitting? I even brought them in my yard to control pests. It is hard to do on a small city lot and neighbors are not always happy about any any kind of pet. We do miss our chicken loving neighbors and have visited them in their new country house in another...
  14. Well, I do use Gu, homemade bars and bananas. We now never stop for lunch because it slows us down, our muscles get cold and we sometimes get nauseous. No lunch even on long rides than are more than 80 miles. We snack constantly and nibble every 20 to 50 minutes by reaching into our pockets or at a stop light. A hydration backpack might work well for...
  15. Ugh! A raccoon pulled my neighbor's chicken's head through the chicken wire. Obviously, the chicken's body did not fit. Had to use 1/4 inch wire on the coop. Then a neighbor's dog jumped the fence and killed two chickens (free range). The kids were not happy. Our town has rooster laws. If a chick turns into a rooster, they have to go! Smell. Yuck...
  16. The blog section is not as active as posting on the regular sections of the forum. If you do not get a good response, try reposting. Sorry to hear about your son. I only had anemia and did not have G I issues either. Ataxia is definitely a symptom of CD. Put ataxia into the search bar and you will find postings from those on this forum who have experienced...
  17. Fasting blood glucose can be the last thing to show a positive for diabetes. Blood sugar spikes over 140 after meals cause damage. A hemoglobin A1C test will show an average over three months or ask for glucose tolerance test to see if you are getting a spike. My SIL whose mother died of diabetic complications, kept asking for additional tests beyond the...
  18. Yeah, I am on HRT (to build bone) and I am still getting hot flashes though not as severe. Ladies at the gym are still getting them and some are in their 80's!
  19. I ride. What are you eating before and during your rides?
  20. I would ask for the blood panel provided you are still consuming gluten. Villi can be damaged from other things (like milk) per the University of Chicago's celiac website. Research, print and hand it over to your doctor. I would hate to have to give up gluten for life if it was not causing damage.
  21. Good luck! I think a gluten-free candy treat will be well earned! Keep us posted.
  22. Oh, some folks do have issues after they have their gallbladders removed. That could be a factor too! I was lucky and had no issues.
  23. How long have you been gluten free? Hummmmm.....this is the danger of going gluten-free with a diagnosis -- folks tend to "fall off the wagon". That said, I was formally diagnosed last year, but my husband, has not. He has been gluten-free for 13 years. He eliminated gluten at the (bad) advice of my allergist and his GP. He will never get a formal dx...
  24. I think you will find that lots of people here on this forum understand! I also think that your health is a priority. You may have to think of another form of ministry that will be just as important while keeping you safe. Seems like it is pretty impossible to train that many young people! It is hard just training one! Good luck!
