  1. Is your gallbladder functioning? A HIDA scan is used to test functionality (emptying/squeezing). Mine reached 0% and became infected after having attacks for 30 years.
  2. Thanks Adalaide! Me, of all people (I have another genetic anemia which will never go away, so I guess I dismiss it) should have known better that to say an anemia will get better on a gluten-free diet. I was able to resolve my iron deficient anemia by supplementing while my intestines healed. Goodbyegluten, be sure to follow up/monitor with your doctor...
  3. Karen is right, but when you are newly diagnosed, keeping gluten out of your house helps with any anxiety you may have (and so many of us had anxiety when we were really sick) and prevents any possibility of getting glutened and setting you back. When you feel better and confident, then you can relax your new standards. That's my two cents!
  4. Everyone heals at a different rate based on the severity of their damage. I finally felt better after nine months! At one year, I feel great. I have had set backs from accidental glutenings. I found that my healing improved after taking iron, calcium (fracture last June related to celiac disease), glutamine for intestinal healing, vit. d, a multi vitamin...
  5. I did take iron supplements for about five months. Not taking them any longer. My last labs were all in the normal range. Standard blood work should identify any discrepancies, but I do not know that much about anemia. I would think you should be on iron until your ferritin levels improve. Obviously something else is still not right in your intestinal...
  6. Go Picnic boxes can be found at Target. Toss in a tangerine, apple or banana. I drag a mini cooler around in my car. Am on the hunt for a "pretty and fashionable" cooler to take into places (i.e restaurants with friends). Lara bars are kept in the glovebox. My husband keeps both the Lara bars and Go Picnics in his car and in his luggage when traveling...
  7. I do not think that thyroid replacement is based on body weight, it is based on your blood tests in an attempt to keep you in normal ranges.
  8. There are several gluten-free bakeries. Sally's or gluten-free Cutie are both good and are dedicated. Just make sure if you find others that they do not allow Gluten in their facility. There is a new bakery by my house, but they bake everything on the same equipment. Ugh! I like baking and I can do so at my Mom's house., but once in a while I will pop...
  9. Just want to clarify that my thyroid has been stable for the last 15 to 20 years (dx Hashi's). Then I went through menopause. It started acting up and I was then diagnosed with Celiac Disease. My doctor has been monitoring my thyroid ever few months. Normally, I let him know if I start to display hypo or hyper symptoms. Right now, I'm hyper. It's affecting...
  10. I have had allergy issues (cats, mold, tree pollen, and some foods) my entire life (so has my family). I don't think it's related to Celiac Disease at all. Just the luck of the draw! I forgot to add that my husband has NO allergies. He's been gluten free for 13 years and enjoys good health! It's no fair!!!!!
  11. Here I sit with a gurgling stomach, red tchy eyes, swollen nasal passages, body aches, feeling blah! Why? It's tree pollen season, Santa Ana Winds kicked up mold this week, a big plate of steamed spinach as part of my lunch and pulling weeds in my veggie garden did me in. My cup is running over with allergens! I have taken a Claritin and that's has...
  12. Buy a set of "gluten free" utensils to use at your MIL's house. I did that at my Mom's. It is kept in a plastic bin with my name on it. I feel safer, that's for sure. I also help out preparing the food and I make sure that my husband and are are the first to be served at all buffets and we do not go back for seconds! Other homes? Depends. ...
  13. Flame Broiler is NOT gluten free! The marinade they use has soy sauce it. Flame Broiler does not accommodate gluten free eaters (maybe for those crazy dieters who think gluten-free is healthy). Their marinades contain soy sauce. It stays on the grille, even if you ordered fresh chicken, I have never seen a second grille……not to mention staff who do ...
  14. Fox Brothers for BBQ, Stony River Steakhouse in Roswell, Good Grub Subs in Alpharetta offer gluten free items. I have celiac disease and have eaten there. Always talk to the manager and include the head chef if possible. Good grub subs is owned by a celiac disease person. Employees are well trained. I visit my family in the Atlanta area for about eight...
  15. Dairy can cause some intestinal damage in SOME people. Frieze was right. Give it up (you already know it bothers you). Make sure you are taking a good multi vitamin and some calcium to replace what you would normally get in dairy products. I had a normal BMI and gained 26 pounds during my pregnancy. My doc was adamant about not gaining more than 2...
  16. Left side pain or a rock feeling (even swelling) occurred and still occurs if I accidentally eat gluten. My only symptom was anemia, but I had to wait seven weeks for my endoscopy. I ate a loaf of bread a day, along with cakes and cookies until then, and then I got that "rock like" feeling, pain that felt like pinching, etc. I felt better six weeks into...
  17. My dosage has decreased barely in one year since going gluten-free. I am running hyper now (requested labs yesterday) but I have been hyper and hypo for the past three years. Keeping my thyroid stable has been difficult.
  18. Based on your previous posts, You were just tested for celiac disease in the middle of March. It was positive, right? Now, you are waiting for the endoscopy, etc.? You have been gluten-free for four weeks? Dairy free for one week? If all this is true, it will takes months or years to heal.
  19. How lovely! Keep it. It may someday benefit a niece/nephew or grandchild too.
  20. Cali, When was the last time your ferritin was checked? If you have been gluten and dairy free for over a year, you should have seen improvement in your ferritin level ( maybe help with a celiac disease diagnosis too). If it was recent, then I would push for an endo and a colonoscopy to determine the inability to store iron or have your blood work checked...
  21. Welcome to the forum! You responded to an old posting, but that is okay! Maybe one of our current members is having a similar issue.
  22. Thyroid antibodies, if high can be either hyper or hypo thyroid. I have been both and the rest of the family is either one or the other. Tomatoes and rice are not a problem for me. Just in case a newbie is reading this post, not all celiac patients have issues with allergies or intolerances. This most common is milk due to damage from celiac disease...
  23. Welcome! Here's a link to our Newbie thread located under the "Coping" section: https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/91878-newbie-info-101/ It contains tons of information that you will find useful. We recommend starting off with plain whole foods like veggies, fish, poultry, meat and fruit. Afterall, your gut is in pretty bad shape and needs...
  24. Gluten doesn't have to be in the actual recipe! It just takes the salad guy to refill the bread drawer and then go back fixing the salads without washing his/her hands. Those who prepare salads are typically one of the lowest paid kitchen employee, right with the dishwasher! The cook could have been preparing a gluten dish and then used the same spoon...
