  1. It's not just the buying it to later find out it sucks. It's the fact that you spent a small fortune on it and it tastes like crap. I spent $60 on regular food last week, enough to last my kids and me a week. Then I went to the health food store and spent $20 on 3 items. It sucks. I am a single mom, I have no money to spare, and frankly it ticks me off...
  2. I hate my diet. But, I follow it. I hate it when there is a box of Tim's donuts on the coffee table in the staff room (the dr's bring them in for us on weekends). I hate it when I go to my mother's house and the house is full of the smell of home made bread. I hate it when I sit down in a restaraunt and the whole menu looks fabulous and if I'm lucky,...
  3. This recipe looks like the one that was in Gourmet magazine last fall. I have been searching high and low for extra finely ground brown rice flour. The woman who developed the recipe said to get it from authenticfoods.com I have looked into getting it online, but a small bag of flour shipped to Calgary would cost me in the neighbourhood of $30 and I just...
  4. Paxil is a slow one to come off of. I was on half a pill every other day for months. I kept taking it for a lot longer than I needed to because the withdrawal was just nasty, I didn't have time for it. I had dizziness, headaches, visual disturbances. However, in spite of that, I have no regrets of taking it (I took it for post-partum depression), since...
  5. Pancakes, in general, have a lot to do with the weather. Mine have been runny lately too. I think it depends on the humidity or something. I have made the same mix in the summer and they come up light and fluffy. I have no idea how to fix this problem, just sympathizing!! FWIW, my recipe for "regular" pancakes used to do the same thing. Some days...

    ARCHIVED Oahu? Maui?

I love Maui, so beautiful. I wasn't gluten-free when I was there, so I'm not a lot of help. However, I remember a Cheeseburger In Paradise in Lahaina, and I recently read they have introduced some gluten-free options. The fresh fruit is so wonderful in Hawaii, you could live on that if you had to! I haven't travelled since my Dx, the thing that bums...
  7. You can't see the villi themselves with the naked eye. However, the damaged intestine can take on a scalloped appearance. Mine was like this. However, the biopsy was still required to verify the microscopic findings and verify the diagnosis. My GI told me I had classic scalloping associated with celiac disease as soon as my endo was done, then he called...
  8. I kinda dig Pamela's Luschious Chocolate Cake mix, very yummy and actually tastes like cake. My sister and I have tried some others that definitely tasted like chocolate, but didn't taste much like cake. I doubt it's low fat, but it sure is good!
  9. I eat Dare gumdrops, jujubes, and jellybeans. They are gluten-free, at least in Canada.
  10. I recently made chocolate cupcakes from Pamela's Luscious Chocolate Cake mix. Everyone was impressed, even my parents and kids who eat normally thought they tasted just like regular chocolate cake. I'm a chocolate cake snob, lol, and I really quite liked it.
  11. I think this is a very personal decision, that you and your husband need to weigh all the potential pros and cons. For myself, I *had* to do it for my own peace of mind because I am asymptomatic. I know the stage of my disease when I started the diet, and I am glad there is a baseline to guage my progress. However, before I had my kids blood tested, I...
  12. I use food for comfort. Not a great habit, but hey, it's the truth. I indulge in the stuff I can still have. I confess I ate ice cream and chocolate sauce for breakfast today (it's not a habit, I've never done it before, I just needed it today because I would have cut my right arm off for a piece of toast). I put real butter on my popcorn. I eat chocolate...
  13. I ate Santa's cookies on Christmas Eve. They were damn good too. But, I was ticked off I had no symptoms following, so I decided it wasn't worth the mental anguish. So, besides that one time, I would have to say no, I don't cheat.
  14. I keep a tub of Bette Hagman gluten-free flour mix around, I use it for all that sort of thing. For gravies it tastes exactly the same as wheat flour, I found I needed slightly more moisture or less flour in white sauces, or they get a little thick/gummy, but overall the flavour has been good.
  15. My friend near Boston is pretty sure she has seen Hershey cocoa in Shaw's Supermarket. Hershey will clearly list wheat on the ingredients list. I use Fry's myself, but not sure if it's available outside of Canada.
  16. I haven't actually tried any gluten-free baking yet, to be honest, besides cake mix. I just want to say I understand the loss of the hobby, as well as the diet. I used to love to bake, and I was pretty good at it. I still bake regular stuff once in a while for my kids or for company (I'm not sensitive, so my house is not gluten-free even though my diet...
  17. Well, I am a newbie at this as well, so I might not be of much help. I have kept track of my gluten-free spending on an excel spreadsheet similar to the sample on the Rev Canada website. So far I've not gone to the grocery store to fill in the costs of "regular" food, but need to do that soon. I really doubt they will give you the cornstarch, but it...
  18. Congratulations!!! What everyone else said..........just eat well, get lots of rest, and the rest is pretty much out of your hands. I have had 2 healthy babies, long before I was dx with celiac disease. Besides the morning sickness, I had very normal and healthy pregnancies and labours. I did have a miscarriage in between my 2 girls, and it was very early...
  19. I tried toast this morning. I haven't had toast in 6 months, and really it was more the jam I was after. So, I have some Kinnickinnik white sandwich bread, which I chipped apart with a knife because it was so stuck together, and threw it in my dedicated gluten-free-but-not-used-in-6-months toaster. The bread sort of curled up and didn't even turn brown...
  20. I am having one in June. It is the only way I know if this diet is doing anything. I have no symptoms, never did, the once or twice I know for a fact I made a mistake and ate gluten, I had no reaction at all. I just need to know what is going on in there. I will be 10 months gluten-free when I get my next scope.
  21. I made cupcakes for Valentine's day using Pamela's luscious chocolate cake mix. They are soooooo yummy, I am truly thrilled with how well they turned out. Even my non-gluten-free kids and parents couldn't tell the difference! Just wanted to sing Pamela's praises!!!
  22. Ahhh, I feel your pain. Went out after work a couple weeks ago with the girls for beer and nachos. Needless to say, I had a Coke and nothing to eat. I think a couple of girls felt like I should have chipped in on the bill.......uh, I don't think so. I'm sure not going to pay for food I didn't eat!! Nachos are probably ok, but in a pub, I was just too...
  23. Honestly, icing is about the easiest thing in the world to make. If anyone wants to know how, just ask me. I have never used canned stuff.
  24. I tried the Kinnickinnik ones. They are pretty good overall, but sort of gritty. They are also quite expensive at around $5 a bag. My sister has made the ones in one of Bette Hagman's cookbook. The texture was quite impressive but we found we had to reduce the cinnamon quite a bit to get a more true flavour (at least, a flavour similar to the ones we...
  25. Me and my sister have it. My parents both tested negative. I was kinda surprised since they both have GI "issues", but I don't know exactly what tests they were given (I think their GP is a quack), and given their age (71), I really doubt they would change their diet now anyhow.
