  1. Hi there! Just wondering if you and your husband were actually tested. It is sooo important for family members to get tested. I have never been sick a day in my life with celiac disease, but I got tested after my sister found out she had it, and low and behold, I have it too. I actually had quite extensive damage on biopsy, but no outward symptoms. I...
  2. I like Breyers. I am pretty much into just vanilla or chocolate anyhow, you have to careful of the funky flavours. I read the label everytime I buy it, though, just to be sure. In Canada there is also a gluten-free brand called Chapmans that is pretty good. There is a wicked ice cream shop (family business) near here, their basic flavours are gluten-free...
  3. Hi. I had to go gluten-free without ever having a symptom. It has been HARD! But, ultimately, I want to be around to see my kids grow up, and I want to be a healthy mom to them, so I do it. I think we all find our own motivation for doing it. For me, it is a chance to be proactive about my future, there are a lot of things I want to do in my life and...
  4. Hello, count me in I am in Calgary.
  5. OMG Karen, thank you so much for calling! I actually just logged on to get the phone number for corporate office and thought I'd swing by here first! I am almost in tears at relief (over French fries, for goodness sakes.........this disease does wierd things to a person), but now I also feel a little bit guilty that our American friends have been ripped...
  6. I'm going to contact McDonald's Canada tomorrow and see what I can find out from them. This pisses me off. It was one of the few things I could grab on the run with my kids. I just had them tonight, in fact. Of course, I feel fine, I always do. Anyhow, I'll let you know if I learn anything new that hasn't been posted already.
  7. The problem with Chinese is manifold, but the big "hidden" culprit is the soya sauce. You just don't know what brand they are using, very few brands are gluten-free and you can bet the cheapo take out place is not using organic soya sauce. As well, the noodles are off limits, as is all the breaded/coated stuff. AND, even worse, even the veggie stuff is...
  8. SusanRachel, I know how overwhelmed you feel. Lots of people here seem to love this diet. I personally am not one of them. However, I do it. I try to keep positive about it. I keep my goals in mind. Really, what I am after is not symptom relief (I do not have any symptoms), but a long and healthy life. I have 2 beautiful little girls and I not only...
  9. Ooooooohhhhhhhh.............................I spend days dreaming about this!!! Breakfast......Pancakes! At either IHOP or DeDutch Pannekook House. Lots of them. Stacked a mile high. If it was lunch............ A burger from Peter's Drive In. Dinner....... OMG, this is a hard one! Crispy fried skinny chow mein noodles, fried rice, sweet...
  10. Blue cheese is allowed by the Canadian Celiac Association. I eat it, but not very often. Sharp cheese is a special treat for me However, I understand that it is not considered ok in the USA. I'm not sure if it is just a different philosophy, or if it is actually cultured differently between the countries. This sort of stuff is confusing, I agree! Though...
  11. Best of luck to you. I had a family member with it before my own Dx, so I was pretty much "up" on what the diet involved, plus I had some time to research things inbetween my + bloodwork and my biopsy. Yes, it is a very hard diet. I don't mean "hard" in terms of willpower. I mean hard in that there is really not a whole lot out there for us. Sure, you...
  12. Mostly what I have read, breastfeeding may help delay the onset of Celiac disease, but will not prevent it if a person is genetically pre-disposed. My mother did not BF me or my sister, we were both Dx last year at the ages of 35 and 37 respectively. I BF both my girls (long before my Dx, so I was totally eating normally) for about a year, exclusively BF...
  13. Thanks for that Monica. I don't even know why I read these threads as it tends to get my dander up. I guess if being a doctor is so easy, I am wondering why all these dr-bashers are not just going into medicine themselves. I know a LOT of doctors. Some are great people and lousy drs. Some are incredibly gifted physicians but total jerks at the bedside...
  14. Well, if you are pathetic, so am I. I haven't cried in a while, but I most certainly have cried. Not so much because I want a certain thing that I can't have, but because I get sooooo frustrated at the lack of options for me. I've cried because I've said no to dinner invitations that I know would be a really good time, but I just can't face watching every...
  15. Really???? That is so cool! I really like Hi Ball, it is right across the street from where I work and not terribly far from where I live. Can you tell me what you had there??? I have typically brought in Chinese food for Chinese New Year (which is this weekend), something sort of fun I brought back with me from my years on the west coast. The kids enjoy...
  16. I am probably the only one here, but he** yes I'd take a pill!!! I would probably not go totally back to ingesting the amounts of gluten I used to eat, but I would like to eat "normally" again (my normal is not necessarily the same as another persons normal). I'd like to not worry about did I eat something with gluten in it and not know it??? I'd like...
  17. My faves are the double chocolate almond cookies. I have not found the K-toos yet to try, and I kind of don't think I should have to order online since the factory is in Edmonton and I live in Calgary.
  18. Have you had your gall bladder checked?? I have had some gall bladder problems in the past, the pain is much as you describe. The first time, they thought I was having a heart attack as I had crushing chest pain, I had the total MI workup in Emerg! I have not had an attack in awhile, but when I do have gall bladder pain, it is up under the ribs and can...
  19. Ooooh, I am totally into SBing too! Lucky you going to a convention!
  20. I tend to oversimplify things, but I believe that God made me, I have celiac disease, and God doesn't make mistakes. I think there is a reason for everything in our lives, even if we aren't quite sure what it is.
  21. Yes! I found this too! I called my Co-Op about some of their sauces and I can have the honey garlic sauce I like so much. It is such a thrill these days when I find one of my favourite products I can still eat
  22. I eat Nature's Path Honey'd Corn Flakes. I didn't care for them at first (never been much a corn flake fan), but I found throwing a little brown sugar on them actually makes them quite good. I'm not as happy with the Crispy Rice, I find it pretty anemic to be honest. I'm not a huge cereal eater to start with, but my favourites used to be Rice Krispies...
  23. Agree with the Kraft! Also Heinz has lots of gluten-free sauces, just look it up online!
  24. No, no, no, it's not painful at all! It's like an x-ray, it takes about 5 minutes to do. I only had my hips done, they just did some views with my leg straight, flexed 90 degrees, that's about it. I had mine actually before my scope, since my sister's first symptom was a fracture. Mine came back totally normal. Don't be scared!
