  1. At least three months (at this point, four would be better); at least three slices of bread a day (or the equivalent).
  2. This is not the reason the flue shot only works against the current year's strain. It's because the flu mutates quickly even outside the pressures of the body, and there is generally a different strain every year. The body does not become less able to fight it, you are dealing with a different strain. (If the flu didn't migrate so quickly, you'd probably...
  3. You ate gluten and got sick - adding in more gluten isn't going to make you feel better. Nancy noted, you may also have caught a bug. But up until you 'poisoned' yourself (gluten is essentially a poision to us) you seem to imply that you were doing better. Don't waste that knowledge! Stick to plain, natural foods for the moment (and it can be tough figuring...
  4. Both items have oat flour, which is - outside of a two or three expensive specialty suppliers - pretty much universally contaminated. It is a personal decision, but be aware that commercial oats are a very risky item.
  5. emi - no, that luna bar was not gluten free - if you check the ingredients, you'll see that it has barley. (it also has oats.) Thought I'd update my contribution to the list of gluten-free (and, in this case, also CF, which makes it a good sight tougher, let me add!) power bars. (aka, all the food I get when I go out skiing for the day ) Open...
  6. And magnesium. The majority of the American population operates on a slight magnesium deficiency (even on a very healthy, well rounded diet, it can be difficult to get enough magesium on a regular basis, and it's mandatory for bone metabolism). You should get magnesium in a 1:2 ratio with calcium.
  7. yep - I've had it a couple times from the inhaled steriods I've taken. it's quite icky. keep brushing your tongue, rinsing well (hydrogen peroxide is a good one to use as well, or tea tree oil), and if you want something OTC, you can get genetian violet. be careful - it stains *everything* and will leave you with *purple* lips for about three days and...
  8. this is one of the reasons why I *have* to get the flu shot. because people come in to work unless they can't get out of bed. no - I'm not blaming you personally. some work places condone this behavior and encourage it (even if they say they don't) by making it very hard on someone for being out sick. but with everyone and their brother and their brother...
  9. I would not have eaten it either. But I think - and I say this on here all the time - that it is *VITAL* that you make it clear that you will not argue with him about what is safe and what isn't. You make a choice, you stick to it, and he gets to either respect your choice or not respect it. Period. The choice is yours alone to make. The only decison...
  10. I don't feel that we have good numbers of the specificity and a sensitivity of the blood tests (or biopsy, for that matter). The reason I say that is because while values have been calculated for perfect use in the lab, I've seen at least two studies that suggest that average use in clinical settings is much lower than that. It's important to keep in...
  11. when I had dogs growing up, they generally got 'people food' - but don't mistake people food for 'corn chips, french fries, and hot dogs'. Most of varieties of that stuff doesn't entirely count as people food either. It'd be meat, veggies (mostly things like carrots), a few grains, and a few fruits. They did primarily get dog food, however. (*raises...
  12. I'm sorry. I have no idea what high serum IgA means. I'd agree that, with those results, it doesn't seem likely that you have celiac. But if you have any other symtpoms besides osteoporisis (and look up the full, 200-symptom list before saying no as many of them are *not* intestinal at all), then I'd encourage trying the gluten-free diet for six months...
  13. lol I think many of us have been in your shoes (dancing) - and many of the others soon will be! Yay!
  14. You have a number of options, even if you're using Internet Explorer (which doesn't have the ctrl-"+" or ctrl-"-" trick). (The following instructions assume you have Windows.) 1) You can change your screen resolution. Right click on your background, and select Properties. Select the Settings tab, and slide the "Screen Resolution" slider to the left...
  15. Hehehe... I have seen this same post on every forum I have been on, at least once or twice a year. *sets watch for six months from now*
  16. There are some ... interesting ... decisions about vaccination programs that are a bit frustrating. It would be nice if they could determine who has mounted a response to a vaccine and who hasn't (not sure if this is possible), and if they would better investigate proper 'vaccine logistics' on the human end. Call it tailored vaccination, if you will. ...
  17. I also generally have Que Pasa.
  18. While still specialty foods, I've found that Health Valley Rice Crunch 'Ems and Corn Crunch 'Ems are gluten-free and taste just like Chex. Nature's Path and Health Valley both make corn flakes (one yellow, one blue) that are gluten-free and I think taste better than Kellog's (particularly the blue).
  19. no. it is not that simple, particularly in this case.
  20. always talk to a tax preparer on questions of a more complicated nature like this, but you may be able to deduct medical expenses IF they sum to being more than 7.5% of your AGI (adjusted gross income).* *this is for the US tax system. I don't know about Canada.
  21. in this article's case, it's specifically referring to the protein structure coded by the allele with the DQ nomeclature (which, iirc, is fairly common). what I had recalled - and may well be off on - is that it is just one of the HLA genes (there are numeous other ones, I think) which has alleles that allow for the development of celiac, and the alleles...
  22. Based on this, Open Original Shared Link (which really appears to be the same as 2 and 8), I came to a different conclusion. Could you point me to the areas of research you've done regarding the two separate genes, since at this point, I'm confused, and would like to look into it a bit more?
  23. I think sushi is fine without soy sauce. I make my california rolls with real crab (and avocado and cucumber). You make the rice (sushi rice, of course - it's short grain variety; rinsing first is a good idea), and while that's cooking, make the rice vinegar, rice wine, salt, sugar combination. (I'd look up a recipe and then alter it to your tastes......
  24. Not all antibodies work the same way, and no - not all antibodies stay in the system for ever. There isn't enough 'space' in the body (and I mean that literally) to hold antibodies to *everything* that your immune system produces an antibody to. It may produce antibodies for a while, but the immune system is somewhat intelligent (no, I don't mean 'intelligent...
  25. The blood tests are tests for antibodies to gluten - reactions to gluten. If there's no gluten in your body, there's no resonse, and no antibodies to find. That's why they often test in 6- or 12- month intervals in order to verify that blood tests show no antibodies. If you originally tested gluten free, or know otherwise from your symptomatic history...
