ARCHIVED Do I Have To Eat Gluten Before Biopsy?
tarnalberry replied to ngj1225's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes. The tests (including biopsy) are looking for a reaction to gluten. If you aren't celiac, you won't react in the presence of gluten. If you're celiac, you have to be ingesting what you would react to in order to have a reaction. Conservative estimate: three to four slices of bread (or the equivalent) each day for three months. -
ARCHIVED Getting Married, Scared For My Future Children
tarnalberry replied to gfreegirlie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It was something that crossed my mind when we decided to have a kid. But, really, the gluten free diet is not the end of the world. It's not as problematic as so many other things that are genetic. (We've got heart disease, breast cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, high blood pressure, and other issues in our blended family that my daughter gets to... -
ARCHIVED 4 Month Old - Questions...
tarnalberry replied to JELCrawford's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's awesome that you guys have been so thorough on the reflux end of things. If you think gluten *could* be a problem, give it a try eliminating it. (My midwives noted that wheat is the other thing besides dairy that can cause reflux and GI distress in babies; we didn't think too much about it since I'm already Gluten-free Casein-free.) I'd certainly... -
ARCHIVED Eating For Long Workouts
tarnalberry replied to coastiewife01's topic in Sports and Fitness
When I go on long hikes or backpacking trips, I take plenty of energy bars (look around, you'll find a number that have a decent amount of protein, even if you're also trying to avoid dairy, though that makes it harder), dried fruit, nuts, and beef jerky (there aren't a lot that are gluten free, but some are, including Whole Foods' house brand). You can... -
ARCHIVED Backapcking...does Cheap And Gr Exist In Europe
tarnalberry replied to The Glutenator's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
If you're backpacking, I'm guessing you'll be staying in hostels part of the time. Bring something you can cook on (such as a backpackers (the outdoors in the woods kind) pan) and use the kitchen in the hostel to make some food on your own from naturally gluten free ingredients. -
ARCHIVED 4 Month Old - Questions...
tarnalberry replied to JELCrawford's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You mention that your 4mo old still shows silent reflux symptoms - regardless of pursuing a celiac diagnosis, you may want to adjust how you're handling the reflux to treat it. My daughter (almost 8 weeks) seems to have mild, silent, reflux. It didn't look like it was causing her much trouble, and she's been gaining weight just fine. BUT! The silent reflux... -
You say that you know they won't be supportive and won't understand, then ask if it's expecting too much that they will accomodate you. Apparently, according to you, it is too much to expect. I certainly wouldn't expect it for a while. Ahorsesoul is SPOT ON. She cannot make you do anything (unless she is tying you down and forcefeeding you, and that's...

ARCHIVED Celiac & Osteoporsis -Men Too?
tarnalberry replied to ivegotitalso's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Osteoporosis in men and younger women is one of the signals for testing for celiac. Unfortunately, a lot of doctors don't know this (because they can't keep up on all the NIH recommendations). He should insist on testing to get to the root of the problem, including celiac disease (which can cause osteo in otherwise unusual populations due to malabsorption... -
ARCHIVED Very Depressive Blood Sugar Crashes?
tarnalberry replied to Pyro's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Are you getting enough fat and protein in EVERY meal? And enough calories, for that matter (you mostly mention veggies). Fat and protein (BOTH!) at every meal (or snack) will help stabilize your blood sugar so that mornings won't be so tough. Of course, if you eat dinner at 8pm, and don't get up until 8am, you may find that those 12 hours are more than... -
ARCHIVED I Can't Seem To Make Myself Do It.....
tarnalberry replied to BriLee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You're not being told what you can and can't have. You're not being forced to eat gluten free. As you state in your post - you do eat things with gluten in them occasionally, so you clearly have the capability to do it. The question is - is it worth the consequences? Everything thing we do is essentially a choice. (Ok, involuntary muscle movement, like... -
ARCHIVED College Meal Ideas?
tarnalberry replied to Becksabec's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Senior year, my friends and I started doing more cooking. I wasn't gluten free at the time, but most of what I cooked was gluten free anyway. Buy yourself an electric skillet and a rice cooker, and you can make just about anything. I would make a lot of stir fries or sautees and have it with rice. You can also make soups and stews in a skillet like that... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Have Bleeding Problems?
tarnalberry replied to Philippa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Definitely keep following up until they get to the root of this. That level of bleeding is considered abnormal even immediately after giving birth! -
ARCHIVED Won't Wear Clothes
tarnalberry replied to jase's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Some kids also have sensory issues and they either really don't like how things feel on their feet or don't want things on their feet to interfere with the sensory input they would otherwise get. -
ARCHIVED Migraines After Gluten Free
tarnalberry replied to melblondin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had occasional migraines before I went gluten free, but they really started up a few years after I was gluten free - when I moved and changed jobs. It's not always a food thing (or certainly not always a gluten thing) and they can come on at any time. For me, I suspect it was a combination of stress affecting my brain chemistry and barometric pressure... -
As everyone mentioned, cake and other sugary or carb-heavy things are pretty much exactly what you don't want to be eating when you feel a blood sugar crash. It will just lead to a harder crash. If I maintain most of my meals (and snacks) at something around 25% fat, 25% protein, and 50% carbs (and not refined carbs!), I can go for "normal" lengths of time...

ARCHIVED Vulvodynia And Celiac Disease
tarnalberry replied to pellegrino's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I would not agree that vulvodynia is a BS diagnosis. Is it used as a dx when a dr can't find anything else wrong, but didn't look for everything? Sure. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist for anyone. Is there an "underlying cause"? Sure. But for at least some people, it's what it is, like saying "you have a cold" and sometimes you really DO have a cold virus... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Stress
tarnalberry replied to Jestgar's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
you won't like my reply, but it comes from being in a similar place, and getting fibromyalgia as the "reward": cut back. yes, you can. you can say no to anything (for me, this included my job). you won't like having to do it, you won't like the choices it requires, but that's how you deal with it. deciding *what* you cut back on is never easy, but... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried Acupuncture?
tarnalberry replied to novelfeeling's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I used acupuncture while pregnant (and hope to get back to it) for fibro/rls/dysthymia, especially once I had to come off my meds. I found it helpful, though not quite as much the meds. Definitely something I'd do again, and I'm hoping to be able to get back to it in a few weeks. It doesn't work for everything, but it can work for some things. -
ARCHIVED Skin Symptoms After Sex
tarnalberry replied to r0gers's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
no reason, rthen, to think it's related to celiac. perhaps a hormonal response, but that delay with no other reason dor correlation, i would look into other reasons. -
ARCHIVED Something Really Scary Has Happened
tarnalberry replied to masterjen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just wanted to add - RLS movements are NOT necessarily voluntary, but they also do NOT fit thr description you give. -
ARCHIVED Strange Sensations... Anyone Else Experienced This?
tarnalberry replied to Kim27's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you're eating meals that have a lot of carbs in them, and don't have a decent amount of fat AND protein, yes, it could be blood sugar levels. If you eat a well balanced meal (something on the order of 25% protein, 25% fat, 50% carbs), do you still feel this way? -
Find a sushi place you trust, and rely on it. Sushi is a safe go-out food for me, because we have a place we know and like. If you stick with the better restaurants, that specialize in sushi, you shouldn't have contamination issues, because, afaik, no GOOD sushi chef, worth the cost of their knife, is going to use contaminated cutting boards for different...

ARCHIVED Could Low Potassium Be Causing Leg Cramps?
tarnalberry replied to jackay's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, suddenly upping dosage of magnesium will cause diarrhea, but ideally, you should be taking a 2:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium, so you'd be wanting about 900mg magnesium per day. And yes, low potassium can cause leg (and other muscle) cramps. -
ARCHIVED Sitting Here About To Lose It
tarnalberry replied to MartialArtist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I seem to often be the "tough love" responder on the board, but it's a role I'm good at, so here it goes - meant in the most supportive way possible: Stop being a martyr and making this so hard on yourself. Your husband and kids don't need to know each and every little detail that passes through your head, but they should NOT be "protected" from the changes... -
ARCHIVED celiac disease Symptom Or Pregnancy
tarnalberry replied to Sarah2889's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yep, the symptoms overlap. Nausea didn't set in significantly until the third week or so, but there was some. Definitely more fatigue, and definitely that slight, period like cramping. Pee on a stick, have your answer today!
