  1. This is true in most aspects of life. Just part of the world.
  2. The problem with telling him this is that you're telling him what he can't do, but not (at least by what you've written) giving him options for what he CAN do. "You need to learn to handle it" may just be leaving him with a big "well how the heck am I supposed to do that?" so that he's not only angry at the situation, but angry that he can't deal with the...
  3. Generally, if you're uncertain, I would suggest three months of COMPLETELY gluten free. (Make sure you've eliminated all sources - lots of cereals have barley malt (like corn flakes and rice crispies), regular soy sauce has it, beer, there's even one flavor variety of tomato paste that has it. Make sure you've eliminated all cross contamination - no shared...
  4. If you're celiac (or "just" gluten intolerant), it'd make sense that you get a reaction from corn flakes - outside of one or two specifically gluten free brands (like a couple of Nature's Path varieties), they have gluten in the form of barley malt. Yes, it's quite possible that your tests were inaccurate. I was gluten free for only a couple weeks before...
  5. This is only true if you don't care about keeping your job. As I learned the hard way when I was laid off last year. I had something I had to make a stink about (a biased, negative review from a boss who had a personal distaste for me and clearly used different standards to evaluate me as opposed to other people in very similar positions), and though it...
  6. Not everyone finds that they go through withdrawals, or that they get so uber-sensitive to any little tiny contamination that they're holed up for a week. And though playdates with a toddler are going to be a little nerve wracking, bring along plenty of wipes to keep your hands clean (and eventually your kids) and even a change of clothes if you'll be around...
  7. No, the tTg IgA alone is pretty useless. If he had done at least a total serum IgA as well, to find out of she's IgA deficient (which affects a decent number of celiacs - 10%?) then it wouldn't be worthless, but wouldn't be all that great. The whole point is that the tests need to be done and analyzed in concert. Her doc's clearly kinda useless on the...
  8. we have a gas grill. we *definitely* do NOT keep that thing at 600F for half an hour. it can get that hot, but you risk damaging the grill.
  9. I think you're making the right choice. Don't get me wrong; I TOTALLY understand the desire to stick it to your boss and say "haha, no you really DO have to", but this isn't the time to waste any good will you've got with ... most anyone. There may well come a time in your job that you really do have to be a hard-@@@ about something, and if you only take...
  10. Heh, no dumb question, that. FAM stands for Fertility Awareness Method. (/rant on - When used for contraception this is NOT the rhythm method. it's absolutely nothing like it. The rhythm method is basically taking a wild, shot-in-the-dark guess at doing FAM without any data to support the implementation. /rant off) I would HIGHLY recommend that you...
  11. There are approximately three other homes I feel comfortable eating in (or being cooked for in) - and they all know that I am even happier to bring my own food than to have them cook for me. They are my in-laws (but I've done lots of cooking there too, especially during the holidays), a couple that we visit fairly often for game night where they tend to...
  12. Most any bag of lentils (and other beans/legumes) will tell you to sort through the beans before rinsing and using because of the issue with harvesting. Trying to make sure that not a single stalk of wheat grows in a field that either is rotated with wheat or even just within the rough vicinity of growing wheat is virtually impossible.
  13. To quote my husband, after I read him your post, "You're screwed." Doesn't really matter what you want it to be, you know what it is. Your tests are all positive and your "contra-indications" are not really contraindications. You can have allergies without sneezing. You can have a cold without coughing. You can have the flu without miserable body aches...
  14. If he's getting gluten, he's going to have outbreaks. If he ever has to eat with other folks, he's likely getting gluten - particularly if he (or you) isn't the one who cooked the food. If you're trying to avoid a diagnosis that badly, then just continue for him to be about as dumb about it as he can be. It's quite often missed, so you have a chance. ...
  15. Illness can certainly trigger it. It could also have allowed a non-symptomatic version to start displaying symptoms. Even if it's not celiac disease, you, and she, knows she feels better without cereals/bread/starches. (Have you taken out *all* gluten, not just the obvious sources?)
  16. Whole Foods (in Bellevue, WA anyway) carried a gluten free licorice. (It happens to be this one: fancy schmancy gluten-free licorice ) (looks like that site has a number of gluten-free licorice candies.)
  17. If you have any sort of a regular wake up time, I would encourage you trying FAM. The reason I'd suggest that over (or in addition to) a ovulation test kit. I say this for two reasons. First, you get a better idea what's going on with your cycle - perhaps you have a short luteal phase and you are having sex at the right time, but a too-short luteal phase...
  18. That's exactly what silent celiac is - damage occurs to the intestine (and potentially other parts of the body) without any symptoms. If left untreated, it causes all the same problems that a symptomatic untreated celiac has - increased risk of nutritional deficiencies (aenemia, osteoporosis, etc.), increased risk of intestinal cancer and lymphoma, increased...
  19. Are you charting? Do you know when you're ovulating and are having sex the three days leading up to and including ovulation?
  20. If it's being caused by an iron deficiency that was itself caused by malabsorption due to celiac - sure, it could totally do that. I developed RLS well after going gluten (and dairy) free.
  21. An IgE test does not test for celiac. Do you have a copy of the results that you could share? (IgE is the immune modulator in a classic allergy. Celiac is an autoimmune disease that is mediated by IgA and IgG antibodies.)
  22. Good news/bad news. Good news: The risks of getting glutened depend somewhat on your symptoms (if you get really bad, long duration diarrhea, then dehydration is a problem, of course). But getting glutened once isn't likely to bring on deficiencies (that couldn't come from being pregnant anyway - like anemia). All in all, one time mistakes aren't going...
  23. It's tough - while your pregnant, your stools WILL be softer, and you may experience "urgency" (particularly when the baby kicks your intestines!). But yeah, you're kinda on hold, while you incubate. But even if you're not celiac, going gluten free isn't "for nothing" right now, because it's the one thing you can do that doesn't have (health wise) adverse...
  24. I generally say "I'm not feeling well, so I won't be able to make it tonight." Then again, I have fibro and chronic migraines as well, and if I'm feeling exhausted, I'm exhausted. The details aren't important, and my friends know that I don't really care about their sympathy, I just want to stay home and rest. If they ask, I certainly won't lie - but...
  25. Salmon oil on kibble also tends to make it more appealing, besides giving dogs some excellent omega-3's. (Weaning is definitely a good thing to do if you generally only feed your dog one type of food.)
