There's a good book (non-celiac related) called Bird-by-Bird, written by Anne Lamott, and it deals with the act of getting through tough stuff that you really don't control. Lamott is a writer, a mom, and a person who has had to steer through lots of unexpected and unpleasant stuff in her life. And she writes with humor and grace. I found the book helpful...

Hi, Here are a couple things I'd check out: -your olive oil: is it your own dedicated bottle? Does anyone else use it? I ask because I once asked my cousin to drizzle "my" olive oil on the salad, and I watched (in horror) as she did the following: after cutting her bread with her bare hands, she took my bottle of olive oil and placed her thumb over...

ARCHIVED Food Dyes And Fake Sugars
gabby replied to Lizz7711's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just a quick note on Stevia....it comes from a plant that is related to the ragweed family. If you react negatively to ragweed, then you might also react negatively to stevia. Just thought I'd pass that along.... If you have no problems (or just insignificant problems) with ragweed, then stevia is a great sweetener! Hope that helps, -

ARCHIVED Got A Laugh Out Of This Analogy

Interesting stuff to know. HOWEVER, that bit of info on how cats eat the 'innards' first, was WAAAY too much information! -
ARCHIVED Concerned Father Needs Your Help.
gabby replied to ble123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, I find it is a good idea to keep a detailed food diary for a couple of weeks. Then you should be able to pinpoint where the possible contamination is happening, or if it is due to dairy, etc. (i.e. does it happen out of the house? in the house? when a certain friend is visiting? etc.) Then you can narrow down your search. You just never know... -
ARCHIVED Should My Whole Family Get Tested?
gabby replied to Waldz1's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Here's another great reason for your family members to get tested now: it will provide some baseline test results, which can be used as a reference point in the future. So if in a few years, new health problems crop up, or current mild symptoms become more problematic, doctors can do new tests, and then compare them with the old 'baseline' tests and see... -
ARCHIVED Toronto Food Company Looking For Celiac Input!
gabby posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, An organic butcher/food shop in Toronto (The Healthy Butcher), is planning on making products specifically for people with celiac disease. They've put out a call asking people for their input. So I thought I'd post it here. This is copied straight from their website: ATTENTION CELIACS The Healthy Butcher is in the process of creating a line... -
This is just a made up joke..it didn't actually happen this way. Me, calling 1-800 food manufacturer number: Me: Hi, do you know if there's gluten in your products? Customer service guy: No, but if you hum it a little I might recognize the tune.

Hi, On today's episode of Oprah with Dr. Oz, he mentioned that one woman in the audience was getting healthier on his eating/exercise program, AND after he discovered she had celiac disease. Now, he did say that it was a wheat allergy (which we all know isn't so), but he did state how serious the problem is. So I see it as progress!

Hi, Sometimes you don't get glutened from the hair products so much when you put the products on. I learned in my particular situation, that I get glutened when I have a shower the next day, and all that gluteny gel, plus hair spray, plus conditioner, plus finishing creme, plus anti-frizz cream, plus curl-enhancing spritz...... all those things wash...

My heart goes out to you, and I do hope you get relief soon. I wanted to offer you my recipe for a hearty soup that is really gentle on the digestive system, is very nutritious, and is also gluten free, dairy free, sugar free, but tasty. I use this soup when something has glutened me, and I need to give my body a rest so it can recover. I highly recommend...

ARCHIVED Clearer Canadian Labelling Laws!
gabby posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, Just got a newsletter from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency outlining new labeling laws that are supposed to come into effect in 2008. The exciting part is an effort to clear up confusion about allergens by making it ILLEGAL to say that something is allergen-free if it was manufactured in a facility that processes that allergen. In their example... -
ARCHIVED Old-timers Help! Reacting Again!
gabby replied to oceangirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, and forgot one other thing.... a possible source of gluten: door handles! I was getting glutened regularly by my microwave door handle, the dry goods door handle, and the worst culprit of them all.....the fridge door handle. -

Can I chime in with a comment on eating meat/fish for breakfast? I do it all the time and it really isn't bad at all. Honestly. Give it a try. I usually cut steak up into very thin strips, and pan fry until crisp (or rare if that's how you like it). When done, throw in some chopped zucchini or a handful of chopped bell pepper (if you can eat those),... -
ARCHIVED Cocoa Powder From Williams And Sonoma
gabby posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, I got a package of pure powdered cocoa (for making hot chocolate) from Williams and Sonoma that is called Valrhona Cacao Gastronomiie 100% Cacaco. It is made in France. And is supposed to ONLY contain powdered cocoa beans. But the box says it may contain traces of soy protein. Just thought I'd check if anyone reacted to this before giving it a try... -
ARCHIVED Need Help With Weight Loss

Can you eat dairy at all? If you can, then I highly recommend two items: a type of cream cheese called Mascarpone (comes in a small tub). It is a delicious Italian cream cheese with a really delicate taste. Be sure to buy the kind that is NOT low fat, you've got to get the regular full-fat one and check the label to make sure there are only 3 or 4 ingredients... -
Can you eat beans? Try this yummy dip rolled up in lettuce leaves or eaten right out of the bowl with a spoon: 1 can organic prepared beans (ingredients: beans, salt, water) 1/2 avocado (optional) 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano few shakes dried thyme few shakes dried sage about 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil optional: about 5 tablespoons gluten...

ARCHIVED A Loaded-with-gluten Question
gabby replied to Silverfyre's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Things got waaaaaaaaaaaay better for me when I stopped having all dairy (found out I was allergic to casein). It made all the difference in the world. Just mentioning this because I noticed you are lactose intolerant...and wondered if you're possibly also allergic to casein. The easy way to test this out is to eliminate all sources of casein for... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Eat For Breakfast?!
gabby replied to LittleZoe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Breakfast soups/stew. It might sound wierd, but wholesome, well balanced, made-from-scratch soups and stews are great for breakfast. I make up a big batch and then freeze them into single portion sizes in ziploc freezer bags. The big thing about breakfast soups/stews, DO NOT add garlic. It is hard to take in the morning. Also, I don't add ANY spices... -
When this happens to me, I don't allow myself to leave the store sad and frustrated and feeling left out. So along with the inevitable plain chicken breast and broccoli for dinner, I also pick up some flowers from the store (just a small bunch, or even just one stem of something...whatever they carry at the grocery store). This way, it helps me to think...

ARCHIVED Food Coloring In Frozen Salmon
gabby replied to Yenni's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just a side-note: Look for fish that says this exact phrase: Wild Caught. It legally has to say this phrase with the words in that exact orde. If it only says Wild (like wild salmon, wild perch, etc) then it is farmed. If it says 'caught wild, or caught in the wild, or anything like that, then it is not wild caught. If the name of the product is:... -
ARCHIVED Grocery Shopping
gabby replied to smilie-girl99's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, Best of luck on getting your grocery store going! Do you (or someone you know) have celiac or have eating restrictions on food? Yes, me and my husband. Do you (or they) find it hard to go grocery shopping? Well, we can shop at any grocery store, but we are very limited with what we can buy. If there was a store that catered to people who... -
Hi, Keflex is more commonly known as Ceporex, and it falls under the category of cephalosporin antiobiotics. You should be able to look up these other names on the internet. It is important to know which brand you will be using because each brand will have different ingredients. If you don't know the brand, be sure to tell your pharmacist that you...

ARCHIVED A Little Insight From Others
gabby replied to Megz's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, With great sadness, I admit that I also have trouble with Swiss Chalet chicken. You cannot eat their french fries because they are not gluten-free. Also, beware of their salad dressings. And the salad too...mostly because of cross contamination from the buns. Have you noticed if you are reacting to dairy products at all? this was a problem for...
