ARCHIVED My Seven Year Old Hates His Diet
Ursa Major replied to GraceA's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
No, Grace, please don't think that way. Many of us are depressed, too, and we do care. I am glad you had that family meeting, and are going to figure things out. You will feel much better, too, when your son is happier. It sounds like you feel much better gluten-free, too, so running a gluten-free household will be good for you, too. I am glad you came... -
ARCHIVED Digestive Enzymes
Ursa Major replied to Anne AMP's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Anne, you may try taking them AFTER eating, rather than before. I heard that they're a lot more effective in people with celiac disease that way. I followed that advice before I discovered that the enzymes I was taking had salicylates, and stopped. But while I took them before meals, they'd give me a stomach ache, and they didn't when I took them after meals... -
ARCHIVED Newby...what To Do Next
Ursa Major replied to dyankeetoo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Laurie, and welcome to this board. It sounds like you've been pretty much gluten-free for three months now. Therefore the expected result of having the tests run now, would be false negatives, because your bowels should have healed pretty much by now if you have celiac disease. If I am right about the gluten-free diet, I wouldn't advise you to go back... -
ARCHIVED My Seven Year Old Hates His Diet
Ursa Major replied to GraceA's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Brendygirl, if you think the celiac disease diet is hard, you should try mine! I'd give anything to only have to cut gluten out of my diet. That newspaper article was as misinformed as doctors these days, when they say that the gluten-free diet is the hardest diet to be on. There are many fresh foods that aren't expensive, if you stick to the basics. In... -
Kathy Ann, if you've been tested for B12, it says 'Vitamin B12'. There is no other way it's put. So, apparently you haven't been tested for it. Go back and ask specifically to be tested for B12. What other things were you tested for, and what were your results? Your symptoms could be the result of generally low B vitamin status (I think it was deficiency...

ARCHIVED Could I Have Celiac
Ursa Major replied to Phillip's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Phil, and welcome to this board. Yes, the likelyhood is very high that you have inherited the celiac disease from your dad. And your symptoms fit the profile. Having the tests run is a good idea. But even if those turn out negative (there are many false negatives), it would be good for you to try the diet (after the testing is done). Why hasn't your... -
ARCHIVED My Seven Year Old Hates His Diet
Ursa Major replied to GraceA's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree with the previous posters. You need to have a gluten-free house for him to be happy. And since he inherited the celiac disease from either you or your husband (not infrequently it seems to be both), it would benefit the one who passed it on to him as well. I like the suggestion of involving him in the planning, shopping, cooking and baking. Kids... -
Julie, I am sorry you are sick. Official flu meds will not help you to get better faster, all they do is cover up symptoms. Your best bet is, to drink echinacea tea, take lots of vitamin C, extra vitamin A, zinc, vitamin E, drink lots of water (orange juice is NOT a good idea, contrary to popular opinion) and get plenty of rest. Garlic (either straight, in...

ARCHIVED Are Smarties gluten-free?
Ursa Major replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I had no idea that smarties can be anything other than chocolate candies, how confusing! -
ARCHIVED ***could My Son Be Allergic To His Diapers?
Ursa Major replied to azmom3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Azmom, you make me blush. I agree that the chlorine could be a huge problem. Try unbleached disposables, that's a great idea. And Mariann, the chlorine could also have been the problem with the diaper service. I am sure they have to use chlorine to get the diapers clean, and no amount of rinsing will get all of it out. Also, you're right, it... -
Wow, you wonder why a mother would make McDonalds french fries part of the child's everyday food, instead of a once-in-a-while treat. You also wonder why it took so long to figure out what was the cause of the little girl's decline. Still, I am glad they finally figured it out. What gets me is, that Geraldo keeps saying that gluten is in wheat, he never...

Georgie, my GP isn't very informed, and will go with whatever ranges the lab tells her are normal. And since she is around 50, she would probably not know that the ranges have changed, and trusts the lab to know all that. So, I don't blame her. And my naturopath decided to have me take my temperatures after looking at my values, and listening to me telling...

ARCHIVED Confirmed Glaucoma Diagnosis Today
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Autumn, I did a google search for glaucoma, and it looks like celiac disease could have caused it. Also, instead of using the medicine, you can use natural ways of controlling it, which wouldn't harm a baby. Here is an excerpt from one website: Here is the link to that site: Open Original Shared Link Here is another link that looked promising Open... -
ARCHIVED Horrible Biopsy Experience
Ursa Major replied to wonkabar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Kristy, I am sorry you had to go through this, I wouldn't stay with somebody like that, either. But Alison is right, you ought to write a letter, explaining why you're switching doctors. I hope that at least you're getting the answers you are looking for. -
ARCHIVED We Did The Biopsy....thank Goodness It Is Over
Ursa Major replied to LauraW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Kathryn's Mommy, and welcome to this board. What a horrible experience you had! But I am glad Kathryn is fine now. Who knows, she might end up being a relatively normal height in the end. But being healthy is the most important thing, being petite isn't too terrible for a woman. Laura, you can get quite a few pre-made flours. The good thing about making... -
ARCHIVED ***could My Son Be Allergic To His Diapers?
Ursa Major replied to azmom3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Azmom, why is your son taking Zyrtec to begin with? If it is because of allergies, is it not possible to remove the allergens, if known? But if he has to take it, I would still not use Huggies, knowing that he is obviously severely allergic to them. There are brands other than Huggies and Pampers out there, every store chain seems to have their own brand... -
ARCHIVED ***could My Son Be Allergic To His Diapers?
Ursa Major replied to azmom3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My oldest daughter's five kids were/are all allergic to some brands of diapers. One kid could use one brand another one was allergic to, and the other way round. The two youngest are in cloth diapers, it's much easier for her. The twins had to have different brands of diapers when they were younger. My youngest daughter was allergic to every brand on the... -
ARCHIVED We Did The Biopsy....thank Goodness It Is Over
Ursa Major replied to LauraW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Laura, I am glad you got through this, and that your daughter is fine. Your doctor sounds great, that is always nice. I hope that you get the answers you're looking for. Are you going to start your daughter on the gluten-free diet now? Since she's had the biopsy, there is obviously no need to wait. -
You might need to investigate the ones you're looking at, by asking them what school they've gone to, how long they've gone to university, etc., search for their names on the Internet, and interview them before you decide you will have them. My doctor has a policy, where you can see him for 15 minutes for free, before you decide if you want to see him...

ARCHIVED Happy Birthday, Momma Goose!
Ursa Major replied to jerseyangel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Oops, I meant to wish you a happy birthday yesterday, but somehow forgot. So, Happy late Birthday, Lisa! I hope you had a wonderful day. -
Tiffany, you didn't hijack 'my' thread! It is still on topic, and if it's helping others discover what might be causing their problems as well, I am happy. You know, you don't need a referral to see a naturopath. You might just want to find yourself a good naturopath, like I did, to finally get some answers. Georgie, the lab my bloodwork was done...

Hi Justin, and welcome to this board. The reason you couldn't find your post right away (even though if you click on 'view new posts' you would) is, that a moderator has to read and approve it first, and then pin it. Which I have just done. Justin, how old are you? If you don't stop eating gluten, you will end up very, very ill and maybe die. Yes, you...

ARCHIVED Need Places To Buy Gluten Free Items Any Ideas?
Ursa Major replied to aaron's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Aaron, Im a three hour drive north of you, so don't really know what is specifically in London. What I do know, though, is that really the only places you can get things like good rice bread are usually health food stores. This is a link to a site with the addresses of two health food stores in London. The Canada 411 site is down right now, I tried to... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Scream And Have A Meltdown!
Ursa Major replied to Turtle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
THAT is a very good point. I can just see you flying down the aisle in the wrong direction, shoving the bride and her dad out of the way, on your way to the bathroom. -
ARCHIVED I Want To Scream And Have A Meltdown!
Ursa Major replied to Turtle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Turtle, I am sorry you have to deal with all that. The nerve of some people! First they think EVERYBODY has lots of money, and can afford whatever they demand you should buy, then you get trampled by the other bridesmaid, and finally the bride gets angry with you for having an illness? I totally understand your feelings of wishing you could just back out...
