  1. Kids her age love to go shopping. My oldest granddaughter, who is six as well, is thrilled when I take her shopping when I'm visiting, and she is ecstatic when I ask her opinion on what treats to buy, and which kind of apples etc. So, I think your daughter would love it if you take her shopping, and let her choose some of the foods you're getting for her...
  2. It could be gluten AND dairy. So, in order to figure this out, eliminate both for a month, and then try just gluten. If you react to it (which I suspect you will), do the same with dairy. If you want to be 100% sure I suggest testing with Enterolab. But your diet response is very telling. Except for the thyroid problems you've had, your history sounds...
  3. Angie is right, sending cupcakes is what people here do, and it makes the kids happy. And there are those yummy oreo-cookies substitutes, that she will like just fine. For the birthday party, you will need to talk to the mother of the child who is inviting your daughter. You might have to send all her food with her. Let's say, they're serving pizza. That...
  4. I agree with Carla. My son craves dairy, and NEEDS it all the time, but it makes him to be in a bad mood, or hyper, it's never good. He won't believe me, unfortunately. My youngest daughter will sneak milk products when they're in the house, but they'll make her throw up, and she has been tested intolerant to all dairy. I used to crave potatoes and rye...
  5. That's great, now you know for sure that you need to be gluten-free for life. Did you get just the gene test done? I checked, and officially, they don't seem to have that option, and therefore they don't quote a price for just gene testing, either. If you really just had gene testing done, what did they charge you?
  6. It will take about six months to a year of eating a lot of gluten to even have a remote chance of a positive biopsy. After only five weeks on gluten, it is pretty much impossible to get a positive biopsy. Also, without a doubt, if she would have had blood tests, they'd have come back negative as well. Both the biopsies and blood tests are meaningless if you...
  7. I just saw that in some places they have 60 cm (about 30 inches) of snow, and more is in the forecast! 200,000 people are without power right now, and some will be all weekend. In comparison, we had no problem at all, as none of it actually ended up staying on the ground. They are saying that this is the most snow in 137 years this early in the year. Crazy...
  8. Well, what are you doing living in Calgary, then, of all places?!
  9. Britni, I can hardly believe that your doctor actually told you, that since your damage is not too bad yet, it is okay to cheat once a week! If you would actually do that, you would never heal, but keep getting worse and worse, until you'd be really sick. If you would cheat once a week, you might as well not bother with the gluten-free diet at all! I...
  10. Sandy, it sounds like it may be much more than lactose intolerance. I suspect it is an intolerance to casein, meaning that just giving your daughter lactaid, rather than avoiding all dairy completely, won't be much help. But I guess you'll find out soon enough which one it is. If lactaid won't stop her from having those symptoms, then I am sure you'll eliminate...
  11. You may be intolerant to coffee, I am.
  12. Yes, I agree that it can be confusing. If it says wheat free, it isn't necessarily gluten-free, but if it says gluten-free, it must be wheat free as well.
  13. Emily, I am about 50 miles north of Toronto. And even though we were affected by the ice storm, we didn't have major damage like the Ottawa area and Quebec. Well, it was like a blizzard for a bit, and it's snowing on and off. Temperatures have gone down to freezing now. I just hope that it won't snow enough for our beautiful maple tree to be wrecked by...
  14. Vegetables contain all the complex carbs anybody needs, nobody needs grains at all to be healthy. So, cutting out your remaining grains and starches and making sure you eat lots of vegetables will give you plenty of healthy carbs. And try to eat several smalls meals a day, instead of three large meals, to keep your blood sugar level steady. That is also...
  15. It sounds like you have an amazing doctor, can we all switch to her? One 12-year-old girl on this site replied to somebody else, saying that she had been diagnosed with osteoporosis already, which sounds like might have been the case with you as well. But at your age, I agree with your doctor, a cocktail of the right combination of supplements, some...

    ARCHIVED Doctor Vs. Test Results

Yes, you say in your signature you've been a DH sufferer since 2003. If you have been officially diagnosed with DH, then you automatically also have a firm celiac disease diagnosis, and need to be gluten-free for life, no question about it, and no more tests needed. And yes, it is highly unlikely you would get a positive blood test after two months gluten...
  17. I am sorry about the osteoporosis and osteopenia, and understand that you're scared. It is very likely that you are deficient in vitamin D, Calcium and Magnesium. Supplementing vitamin D and Magnesium is even more important than calcium supplementation, because your body can't use calcium without the D and magnesium. Depending on your age, it may still...
  18. Dear Lisa, you must NEVER give up. Just because all those doctors and your family are in the majority doesn't mean they're right. There is no such thing as IBS, and if you get a terrible reaction to gluten, the so-called IBS diet is utterly ridiculous for you. Don't give in to all those clueless people, it's your body, they can't force you to eat gluten!...
  19. Well, thankfully, it has stopped already. The problem with a lot of snow this early is, that the leaves are still on the trees. If the snow is wet, it clings to the leaves, and many trees will break. About ten years ago we got a ton of snow before the leaves had fallen off the trees, and all through the night and day it was like shots were being fired. But...
  20. Natlay, it is quite common for people with celiac disease to have fertility issues, including not getting their period. Hopefully, once you recover and gain some weight, things will normalize. But it can't hurt to mention it to your doctor.
  21. Here I am sitting at my computer, and the phone rings (the church secretary, wanting to talk to my husband, who works from home twice a week). And she says, Ursula, have you looked outside recently? It's snowing! And sure enough, it's REALLY coming down, in big flakes. Yikes!
  22. My temperatures seem to be going down, and they were already way too low. Yesterday morning it was only 34.9 degrees Celsius (94.82 Fahrenheit), and even in the afternoon wouldn't go above 35.6 C (96.08 F). Previously it would always be 35.3 C (95.94 F) in the morning, and by the afternoon it would be 36.3 C (97.34 F). I measured many times yesterday and...
  23. Angelina, a high fasting glucose is never normal, and is a good reason for concern. I suggest you eliminate pretty much all starches and sugar for a while (eating mostly meat, vegetables and fruit) to control that. Because, really, you're on the brink of being diabetic, and you don't want to go there.
  24. Robina, if something says gluten-free, it must, by default, be wheat free as well. Because if it contained wheat, it wouldn't be gluten-free.
  25. Well, I found that it was the easiest and best (and cheapest) to exclusively breastfeed until about 8 or 9 months old, and then start with vegetables like carrots and potatoes (mashed or put through a blender, depending on the baby, some hate lumps). Banana is a good first fruit, as you can just mash it with a fork, and I haven't seen a baby who doesn't like...
