  1. I used to have SEVERE joint and muscle pain, which initially stopped when going gluten-free, but came back three months into the gluten-free diet. I then figured out I am intolerant to ALL lectins (not just gluten). They were causing the joint and back pain (amongst many other things). And I am intolerant to salicylates as well, which caused the muscle pain...
  2. Manja, I am so happy that Anna is eating well now! Of course, eating out will always be tough, as will be visiting family or friends. She'll get used to not being able to eat certain things, and will eventually not ask to have them any more. And think about it, you have to say 'no' to a lot of things a child that age wants to have/do, not just food, as...
  3. My stomach definitely gets inflamed when glutened. I doubt that you need a doctor, you just need to wait it out, don't eat anything that would be hard on your stomach for a bit, avoid gluten, and you'll be fine. And yes, you can have symptoms from ONE glutening for two weeks, never mind several in a row.
  4. Cari, do you really want to wait until September? It sounds to me that your whole family could benefit from being gluten-free. Testing in children under five is highly unreliable through the traditional methods. If you want testing done fast, reliable and convenient, you should get your son, daughter and yourself tested by Enterolab (in the US some insurance...
  5. KristiAnne, I suspect that you have other intolerances, and aren't really constantly glutening yourself. You may want to try eliminating dairy, corn and soy for a while and see how you feel. If you feel better, and your 'glutenings' stop, keep off all those for a few weeks. Then, test them one at a time (two weeks apart) to see which one(s) is causing you...
  6. LJannise, you are saying that rice will give you the same kinds of symptoms as gluten. You may be intolerant to ALL grains, not just the ones with gluten. Check out the link on lectins in my signature, it may help figure it out. You certainly don't sound crazy. I believe that you are definitely gluten intolerant, and probably have a wheat allergy as well...

    ARCHIVED Stomache Ache After Testing

Evie, I am sorry you feel bad. Hopefully those things will pass through your system quickly, so you can feel better. I know the general consensus is (here and that's what doctors think, too) that you can't get gastrointestinal symptoms through something that enters your skin. I've always disagreed with that. Obviously, if you had testing done with...
  8. Yuck, doesn't the safety and wellbeing of the many people with celiac disease mean a thing to them? I thought it's difficult here, but I see that living in the UK with celiac disease is much more of a challenge.
  9. Welcome to this board. Testing is highly unreliable with children under five, with many false negatives. All of her symptoms are very typical of celiac disease. Plus, there should have been five tests done, not just two (somebody else will have to tell you what they are, I don't really know). A skin biopsy is a good idea, you'd have to be referred to a...
  10. Erika, it sounds like you're doing just great on the gluten-free diet. It can take up to two years to be actually symptom-free. Nobody can accomplish that in a week! Also, have you made sure you really don't get any gluten from anything? Have you checked all your personal care items (soap, shampoo, conditioner, lipstick, toothpaste, lotion etc.) for gluten...
  11. You're right, it is totally illogical to consume any amount of gluten on purpose. What if in one day you drink barley water, eat something with wheat starch (which in Europe they claim is no problem), and eat several other things that have 'safe' levels of gluten in it (I personally don't believe there IS a safe level), eventually you should think you would...
  12. You could try testing her through Enterolab Open Original Shared Link for some definitive answers. It's not cheap, but worth it. My joint pains were caused by lectins (which gluten is one of). For more information, follow the lectin link in my signature. My joint and muscle pain started when I was about three, maybe even younger (salicylates cause generalized...
  13. Well, my family apparently doesn't care about keeping me safe. They've all declared that it is my own responsibility to make sure I'm okay. Meaning, that my husband and two youngest daughters (20 and 14) leave crumbs, gluteny knives and dishes EVERYWHERE, and expect me to clean them up. I suspect that is why my health has improved to a certain point,...
  14. Netty, sorry about forgetting to add the link to Nini's website last night! Here it is: Open Original Shared Link No, you can't 'acquire' celiac disease, but yes, surgery can trigger it if it was silent before. You were likely showing signs of intolerance before without realizing it, but not full blown celiac disease. And yes, the immune system going...
  15. I am totally stumped on this one, as it clearly contains barley and should have gluten! Here is a link to a recipe in case anyone has any doubt: Open Original Shared Link Maybe you're going to have a delayed reaction? Even though, of course, I hope you won't, it is possible.
  16. Hi Becky, and welcome to this board. I recommend you follow the link in my signature on lectins, it sounds to me as if they could be the problem. Rice and eggs cause me to have almost the same symptoms as if being glutened, and so does soy. Potatoes cause similar problems as well. Anyway, you would do well to read what it says, and try eliminating lectins...
  17. My mother was a control freak, too, and very abusive. I thought it was normal to be treated that way! She kept me as dependent as she could, until I rebelled at the age of 20, and moved out. But I had never learned to look after myself, and felt I needed somebody 'strong' to look after me. Controlling people seemed like strong people to me, I didn't know...
  18. Hi Mary, and welcome to this board. Poor little guy, I hope he will heal fast. I think it would be good to check his calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, ferretin and vitamin B12 levels, to find out where he needs supplementation, and how much. In the meantime, make sure he gets a good (gluten-free) multivitamin every day. You're doing the right thing with the...
  19. Hi Netty, and welcome to this board. You sure sound like you have celiac disease, and most of your problems are common ones for celiacs. Leah is right about the blood tests, you could do those, but would have to have the blood drawn before going gluten-free. Once the blood is drawn, regardless of results being back, you should start on the diet, since you...
  20. Well, I voted "I have one but not the other". I used to wake up gasping for air (suspecting sleep apnea), but since going gluten-free haven't had that problem! Thank God, it was scary.
  21. If you suspect that gluten may be a problem, get tested for celiac disease! And while you're at it, get tested for other allergies/intolerances as well, to get to the bottom of this. Since you only experience this problem right after eating, it's obviously food related. I agree with the food diary idea. Start writing down exactly what you eat at every...
  22. Wasted post???? This is fabulous, that you had the energy to do this, and came in second! Congratulations!
  23. Actually, the first counselor did tell him that we can only change ourselves, that's the first thing he pretty much said. And we tried marriage counseling with another counselor, who said the same thing, and again, it was the same story. It was utterly useless. Ken is still convinced we'd have a fabulous marriage if only I changed. Since he is perfect...
  24. That certainly sounds good. Most of this article is very helpful to celiacs, while only a small fraction isn't based on fact. Overall, a good article. And I hope that it will get much easier once even the preliminary guidelines are out, to find gluten-free foods. Mind you, I find it sad that the manufacturors don't just produce food that is 100% gluten...
