ARCHIVED Traveling To France & Germany
Ursa Major replied to tanyad's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Actually, if you already know the languages, you will be able to figure out what the translation says (even though you might die of a laugh attack). But since German sentences are generally backwards from English ones, the translations usually don't end up making much sense at all. You can get words translated, maybe a sentence, but a page? This is the... -
Sue, I get the same problem, and I know that my heart is skipping a beat then, as I've seen it on a heart monitor. I've been told that there is nothing wrong with my heart. On the other hand, a doctor said that lack of potassium or magnesium can cause these problems. It is possible to overdose on potassium. I suggest you make a doctors appointment and...

Nancy, I had ALL of the above symptoms, with the exception of the hand tremors (even though I sometimes had that problem, just not consistently). They all went away when I stopped eating all the things I am intolerant to! I just googled Graves disease and found this list of symptoms. on this site: Open Original Shared Link And the only symptoms...

ARCHIVED Anyone Else Rice Intolerant?
Ursa Major replied to covsooze's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am intolerant to lectins, which is present in ALL grains, including rice. I tried rice about five weeks ago to be sure, and it was awful. First I got a terrible stomach ache, by the next morning I was wheezing, and by that afternoon I had awful pains in my wrists, feet, ankles and knees and had trouble walking up and down stairs. I was also really tired... -
covsooze, yes, it is a good idea to get a new colander. When you strain noodles it's almost impossible to get all the stuff out of a colander, even in the dishwasher, since it's so sticky. Also, test yourself for what milk products do to you specifically. Completely avoid mild products for at least a week (includen small amounts in gravy etc.), and then purposely...

Carrie, I am glad your heart is feeling a bit better already. But don't forget the potassium - actually, when you see the doctor, have him check your potassium levels, that way you know where you stand with it. Especially because potassium supplements are bad if you don't have low potassium, it is possible to overdose. And potassium overdose can lead to kidney...

Carrie, I had the same symptoms for years, but since I've been supplementing with potassium and magnesium, they have improved so much, that I now rarely get heart palpitations. Low potassium will especially cause heart palpitations I've been told by a doctor at the hospital. My heart used to skip and race so badly at times (up to 200 beats a minute, lying...

I fractured my ankle four years ago. Being nearly 53, and knowing now that I had gluten intolerance symptoms all my life, and having tested to have low levels of vitamin D not long ago, I was assuming that I probably had osteoporosis. But my bone density test proved that theory wrong, my bones are, surprisingly, in excellent shape. So, don't assume anything...

ARCHIVED Bob's Red Mill?
Ursa Major replied to key's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Monica, buckwheat isn't a grain at all, but a seed. Which doesn't necessarily mean that some people wouldn't have a reaction to it, as anything is possible. In my grocery store (Sobey's) they have a whole section of Bob's Red Mill products, and about 75% of them aren't gluten free products. They are even selling gluten flour, which purposely has a ton... -
ARCHIVED What Does A Typical Day Of Eating Look Like For You All?
Ursa Major replied to BeccaM's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, my menu isn't very typical of a celiac diet, because I am intolerant to so many things, and I am quite restricted. This is what I had today: Breakfast: Chicken thighs with shallots and broccoli. Snack: A peeled pear (the peel contains salicylates and would make me ache). Lunch: The same as above (I cooked enough for both meals).... -
ARCHIVED New Book: Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic
Ursa Major replied to celiachap's topic in Publications & Publicity
I got mine last week and this far find it interesting and informative. -
ARCHIVED Asberger's And Celiac Disease
Ursa Major replied to mochalatta's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I definitely think that there is a link between autism and Celiac disease. I have Asperger Syndrome, and find that the gluten-free (and many-other-things-free) diet has helped me function better. I don't get sensory overload (and subsequent meltdowns) as often, I can tolerate crowds and noise better, and I don't need to be alone as much. I wonder what... -
I am intolerant to caffeine (it has salicylates in it), but I am theoretically allowed to drink decaf. But since I am intolerant to dairy and HATE coffee without cream, I don't bother. I never drank much coffee, because I've never felt good afterwards (and it makes me incredibly sleepy ), so I don't miss it.

I read of a study last year of older people with heartburn and acid reflux. It was found that they didn't eat enough meat for the stomach acid to be used, so it caused heartburn. They had them eat more meat, to give that excess acid something to do, and after several weeks all of them found that their acid reflux was gone. I used to get acid reflux, too...

ARCHIVED Traveling To France & Germany
Ursa Major replied to tanyad's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
The one thing that helps my stomach ache when glutened (or otherwise 'poisoned' by something I am intolerant to) is a homeopathic remedy called Sepia. You get it in the health food store. It usually works within minutes of dissolving six little white pills under my tongue. Since all herbs and spices and a lot of chemicals are poisons to me, I can't use... -
ARCHIVED Hypermobile Joints - Ehlers Danlos
Ursa Major replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can't bend my thumbs back, but got all the other points. But my knees bend way back, I've never seen anybody else being able to bend their knees backward as far as me. And my chiropractor has to adjust both my feet and ankles every time I see him (twice a week), and will comment on my feet and ankles moving way too easy and far (which of course causes them... -
Fairysprinkle, I just got back from a cruise. I have known for years that I am very intolerant to all nightshades (potoatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant), and found out about gluten, lectins and salicylates fairly recently. I knew that potatoes caused severe gastronintestinal distress, and tomatoes horrible migraines, but didn't know for sure what...

Actually, Susan, I agree with you on the '20 somethings drinking at the pool' part. I stayed away from that part of the ship altogether, the same goes for the casino. I didn't need the sight of 1000 people crammed on deck in deck chairs in varying stages of being roasted, while drinking and talking vulgar talk (of course, I am 'allergic' to crowds anyway...

ARCHIVED Traveling To Europe
Ursa Major replied to GlutenFreeAl's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
One thing I read about Finland is, that they allow 300 ppm of gluten in their 'gluten-free' foods. And as a result, when they had the international celiac convention there, many Celiacs from Canada and the USA, who aren't used to such high levels, got quite ill when eating their specially prepared foods. -
ARCHIVED Hypermobile Joints - Ehlers Danlos
Ursa Major replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I also have hyper mobile joints (meaning for instance, very unstable ankles, I've sprained them many times, and fractured the left one four years ago). My wrists are also not very strong. The awful pains went away after going gluten, lectin and salicylate free. -
ARCHIVED Hair Loss And Misscarraiges/baby Died With Anencephaly
Ursa Major replied to jennifervan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As everybody else says, yes to all your questions. I had eight miscarriages before I finally gave up wanting a brother or sister close in age to our youngest, who is six years younger than the rest, due to miscarriages (she should have been a twin, too, and I lost the twin). Nobody could find the cause. Now I know why I had those. My mother (who undoubtedly... -
I thought I'd just let you know how my holidays went. We went on a cruise with the Carnival Cruise Lines (the ship's name was Imagination), from Jan. 26th to Jan. 30th, and afterwards to Key Largo until Feb. 4th. The cruise was great, even though they messed up two of my meals. The first time was the first breakfast. The maitre'd had promised me salmon...

ARCHIVED Traveling To France & Germany
Ursa Major replied to tanyad's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Beware of their 'codus alimentarius' or whatever they call it. They allow 20 ppm of gluten in their so-called gluten free foods. Also, they are adamant that there is no gluten in wheat starch or wheat germ oil. From what I've read, those should be avoided when you have Celiac disease. The store to go to in Germany to buy gluten free food is called 'Reformhaus... -
My husband and I just got back from a cruise with Carnival cruises, and they were awesome. Of course, I can't eat any of the gluten free things most of you eat, anyway. But as someone said before, the assistant maitre'd or one of the hostesses would go over next day's menu after supper with me. I got to pick and chose items from any of the choices that I...
