ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal
Ursa Major replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
First of all, back to the original topic. No, I didn't have any withdrawal symptoms when eliminating gluten. I started feeling much better by the next day after figuring it out and going off gluten. To what gfp said: Steve, I had to read your original post twice to realize that you meant you purposely ate gluten for 2 - 3 days AFTER you got glutened... -
ARCHIVED Absorption Problems With Calcium And Vitamin D
Ursa Major replied to BeckyW's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow, I watched the whole thing and it's amazing. When I was retested to check my vitamin D levels in October (after taking two tablespoons of cod liver oil a day for a year), my vitamin D levels had gone up from 25 IUs to 158. According to the lab, the normal range is 40 - 150. 40 is way too low, and not normal at all. This guy says that we are designed to... -

ARCHIVED Update On My Brother
Ursa Major replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think he acts just like your twin. I remember you doing the same kinds of things, always doubting the gluten problem was real. How long did it take you to face reality? And for that matter, you yourself are still posting in the pre-diagnosis forum, as if you were still not sure. Sheesh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
ARCHIVED Absorption Problems With Calcium And Vitamin D
Ursa Major replied to BeckyW's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, if I'd try to get my vitamin D from sun exposure right now, I'd be sunk. It's the middle of winter, with snow and cold, and I have to bundle up to stay warm. The sun isn't out anyway, but even if it was, it wouldn't do much good. The only places where you can get enough sun to make the vitamin D you need all year round are around the equator. Everywhere... -
All things considered, this is a great article. But I agree with Tiffany, that it is ridiculous that they call a diet without gluten or dairy products unbalanced. NOBODY needs either of those to be healthy. In fact, I don't believe those are really healthy for anybody.

ARCHIVED Absorption Problems With Calcium And Vitamin D
Ursa Major replied to BeckyW's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Becky, have you tried getting your vitamin D from a natural source such as cod liver oil? I had low vitamin D levels a year ago and started Carlson's cod liver oil (the only kind that doesn't taste awfully fishy), and my vitamin D levels went too high within several months! The other benefit of cod liver oil is, that it supplies you with omega 3 essential... -

ARCHIVED Diagnosis
Ursa Major replied to nothing but nicole's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Did your doctor take multiple biopsies while doing the endoscopy? Unless he did that, you won't really know if it's celiac disease. Your sister's doctor is as ignorant as most doctors when it comes to celiac disease. Celiac is seriously underdiagnosed thanks to doctors like that. He is very wrong when he says that celiac disease is often misdiagnosed.... -
ARCHIVED Question, Blood Work, Please Help
Ursa Major replied to PeaceAngel22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
After being on the gluten-free diet for 11 weeks, your bloodwork will more likely than not be negative. Which won't mean a thing, you might still have celiac disease anyway. The same goes for a biopsy. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Cure.... A Possible Pill To Cure Celiac
Ursa Major replied to PizzaGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have heard of that, too. But of course, as with most pharmaceuticals, it will be a bandaid solution, not a cure. It will cover up/stop the symptoms, but will do nothing to fix the cause. Which of course, no pill can do, as pills can't change your genes. Since, even after it comes out, nobody will know what the long-term side effects of taking a pill... -
Actually, the vitamin D deficiency is both a sign that people don't get enough sun exposure, AND a symptom of celiac disease. We do get some vitamin D in food (in butter, for instance), and it can't get absorbed when your small intestine is damaged. I was deficient in vitamin D as well when tested in November of 2005. I started supplementing with cod liver...

ARCHIVED Cocoa ?
Ursa Major replied to georgie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Georgie, cocoa is usually gluten-free, but as Larry mentioned, hot chocolate mix may not be. Larry, some celiac specialists are doubting that there is a difference in celiac disease and gluten intolerance, and want the distinction removed. Celiac disease (destroyed villi) is just one possible form of gluten intolerance, there are many other ways it can... -
ARCHIVED Giveing Emmah Gluten
Ursa Major replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you, yes, she is awfully sweet (and so are the other six grandkids, of course) As said before, if Emmah vomited and has tummy aches so soon after one sandwich, you really have your answer. Also, you simply can't keep feeding her gluten with such a strong reaction the first day! It could kill her. So, obviously, it's not even an option any more. ... -
I would avoid all soaps that claim that they have moisturizers in them. The likelihood of that being wheat germ oil is high. And it is true that those antibacterial cleanses are useless, since gluten is not a bacterium. And the alcohol based one is just as useless, unless you rinse your hands with water afterwards. If you don't rinse your hands, the gluten...

ARCHIVED Giveing Emmah Gluten
Ursa Major replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Not a wasted post at all. It shows what people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance face these days, because doctors refuse to diagnose just by diet response. I don't think he should have even suggested option no. 2. I am glad you can't do the diet challenge with Emmah. Poor little tyke has suffered enough already. Can you afford Enterolab? I... -
ARCHIVED Newbie, A Lot Of Confusion...
Ursa Major replied to Lindsay GFMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Lindsay, and welcome to this board. I have seen many parents here reporting their kids having significant growth spurts after starting a gluten-free diet, and gaining weight (if they were underweight). I wouldn't use the Bosch mixer for making anything gluten-free, unless you can be absolutely, 100% sure that you are able to completely scrub and... -
ARCHIVED Infertility And Celiac Desease
Ursa Major replied to Katanya16's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Susanne, and welcome to this board. First of all, OF COURSE your blood tests came back negative, that was to be expected after being on the gluten-free diet for several years. If your tests would have been positive, that would have indicated that you were still eating gluten. I expect that if you'd be tested now, that your test would come back positive... -
ARCHIVED I'm Prepared To Be Frustrated
Ursa Major replied to itsmaryj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Mary, and welcome to this board. Of course it's obvious what you ought to do if your test results are negative! Those tests are not very reliable, and yield many false negatives. That goes for the blood tests and the biopsy. So, after testing is finished, you need to try the gluten-free diet, no matter what the results. Because it is possible that it isn... -
Jenny, I am so sorry things are so hard for you. It almost sounds like they're going out of their way to make life difficult for you. It is your husband who needs to talk to his family and deal with them. They will never listen to you. He is married to you, and needs to be on your side, not his mom's. He needs to eat with you, rather than with them, so...
