  1. Hi and welcome! I can't answer the yeast extract question sorry but you and I are similar in that we don't have a celiac diagnosis. I chose to live as if the diagnosis was positive however due to the severity of gluten impact on my health and the risk of a false negative. As such, I've had to be very strict on the diet and so I avoid any 'maybe' items...
  2. This must be awful for you both. One suggestion, keep a food diary for her and document how she's feeling. It could be helpful in diagnosis, but also perhaps in later years if she's tempted by gluten or anything else she doesnt tolerate well. Hopefully her memories of being poorly will fade, so having the record may be useful? Best of luck to you...
  3. I understand starting a new job isn't the best time to miss work but you surely need to see a dr and perhaps get a dermatology referral. If only to exclude anything like Cycling lady's link above. You have an auto immune condition and need to look after yourself! Given it can take time to see a doctor, perhaps you could make an appointment for a few...
  4. Just to repeat the warning above, please don't go gluten free yet. Your doctors need you to keep on your regular diet whilst they're testing. Otherwise you may wind up with a false result. and please don't be worried, yu are taking steps to find out what's wrong and you have found a doctor who is taking you seriously. This is positive. Trust her and...
  5. I wouldn't dream of it - one thing this site and this condition has taught me is that each of us have to be our own advocate and ultimately take responsibility for how we approach this. The question of whether to pursue a diagnosis or not is not always clear-cut, in part because there's no treatment available at the end of the process, so it really depends...
  6. Hello Admin!

I don't know whether this is of interest to post on your articles feed:

Thanks Karen I hadn't realised that was an option :)

  7. We have similar Walkers baked crisps in the UK and they're verboten here too: Open Original Shared Link It's a pity as I used to like them, especially 'square crisps' I used to munch them with abandon! Ah well...
  8. When you mentioned the university I wondered it it was Sheffield, that was where I'd planned to contact before I gave up on the diagnostic process. Wherever it was I'm impressed with their diligence, it's good to know that there's this level of expertise available here. That sounds sensible. If you find any changes upon excluding gluten I...
  9. I love spinach and eat quite a lot of it...
  10. No one here can diagnose you obviously, but so many of the symptoms mentioned above fit the celiac profile, well done on looking into this and don't be disheartened if your mum and brother aren't receptive. Get your tests, if they're positive they will both be screened in any case. If you test negative give serious thought to trialling a gluten free...
  11. I know the feeling! I found more and more symptoms on here that I'd had and had almost trained myself to ignore from muscle twitches to a white tongue. I have to stop myself blaming every ill on the damned stuff be it the Kennedy assassination, sinking of the Titanic, or the fall of Troy Hope the skin issues are soon resolved.
  12. I think there's a wide variation in knowledge along with a portion of wishful thinking. When I first realised I had a problem I went out for a drink with a diagnosed coeliac guy to get some guidance. He was telling me that he could now drink lager as his stomach had 'healed'... It's a good point. I enjoy coming here because I've learned...
  13. Welcome Carole You may want to start a new topic if you need any advice. Otherwise, you have found a great site.
  14. Ah sincere apologies! I did worry if I was a bit preachy in that last post, it wasn't my intention, particularly as I said before I'm not exactly a poster boy for dealing with this myself... No reason why you shouldn't be able to drink. There's plenty here who are fine with alcohol and I haven't discounted a return to it, especially on days like this...
  15. Hi Jenni, Why not start a new topic so that others can advise you? There are some great people here with a lot of knowledge around the different ways it can manifest. For what its worth I've had a lot of the symptoms Modernlife details above improve or resolve completely after going gluten free, but the advice above is so important about eating gluten until...
  16. Welcome Sarah There are lots of people more knowledgeable here, but just from reading the site there's lot's of coeliacs who have had gall bladders removed and there are some who are negative on blood but positive on endoscopy. I've seen pregnancy cited as a catalyst in onset also? There is also a 'silent coeliac' version where no symptoms are apparent...
  17. Awol there's so much in your story that I identify with. The early shingles, back pain and more. I think your husband sounds like a great guy. Good on him for being so supportive and understanding. Your sister, er less so! If she does it again break her broomstick, or throw a bucket of water over her, worked for Dorothy. I hope writing this down...
  18. Well he comes across as a nice, balanced chap...
  19. Thanks for posting the follow up Sterling, like others I found this topic very interesting and it should prove useful to others. Certainly for me, I had a negative endoscopy but am left wondering if damage may have taken place further down the intestine. Are you in the UK by any chance? Do you have any other symptoms that might be attributable to...
  20. I've found myself choosing simpler drinks and food since I went gluten-free. The fewer variables the less chances for something like this. Even so there seems to be so many ways you can get glutened. A soy latte is about as adventurous as I get now and as my palate changes the starbucks one of those seems too sweet. I had heard the chocolate sprinkles...
  21. I love both mainstream and alternative. No point me telling you to watch The Shawshank Redemption or The Godfather however so I'll pick a couple off the beaten path: Book - The Master and Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov - One of the greatest novels ever written came out of the hell of Stalin's Russia. So much within this book and a great feat of creativity...
  22. By sure do you mean that it's been confirmed by your doctor, or that having excluded thyroid you've concluded it must be celiac? There's a big difference between the two! If you go gluten free before testing you will make getting a correct diagnosis very difficult and potentially needlessly painful. Everyone here will understand your urgent desire to...
  23. I think you need to see the doctor. If you're worried about being dismissed by them you could write down in note form clearly and concisely before you go in exactly what symptoms you're experiencing, for how long and that they are worsening. Ask them if they can exclude Addisons or adrenal issues and if not can they refer you to someone that can? Note...
  24. Yep, ditto. It's take it's toll on self esteem, relationships etc. To the point where I don't much like my pre gluten-free self for seeing the world through a prism of negativity and cynicism, although I guess I should forgive him I'm now trying to process all this so I can get on with my life, but it's been a rough couple of years and sadly I was, depression...
  25. I didn't. I only realised once I cut it out. It was like a constantly running tap, after awhile you no longer notice it's there. I lived with constant anxiety, depression and various physical ailments that just became 'normal'. When I changed my diet I had a massive shock.
