ARCHIVED aged cheese
Jays911 replied to ironictruth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Check the labels, as many products of the brands mentioned above are not real cheese, just "cheese products", I go to a good deli and buy good cheeses with no problems, If you do have a lactose issue, stick with the hard cheeses as previously noted. -
Don't give in on dining out. Almost every pizza place I know has gluten-free options. You have to,tell them about cross contamination issues sometimes, but I have not had any issues. Mexican restaurants have options, and numerous chains (Jason's Deli, Schlotzsky's, Chipotle, Noodles) all have many options. I wishyou well, but you are limiting yourself needlessly...

ARCHIVED could i have had celiac disease for 30 years without knowing?
Jays911 replied to Librarychick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes. I wasn't diagnosed until age 60. Looking back, I know I had the disease for at least 20-30 years before diagnosis. But the good news is that things do get better once you go gluten free. Hang in there. -
For fast food, both Jason's Deli and Schlotzky's have gluten free options. I am told Panera is starting. We have regional pizza chains like Pie Five and Uncle Maddio's that have gluten-free crusts and take precautions for gluten-free eaters.

ARCHIVED Gluten Reduced Beers OK for Celiacs?
Jays911 replied to Zozo16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't get sick with Omission, but it kind of makes me feel odd. Sticking to wine and liquor from here on out. -
ARCHIVED How soon do you get a sore stomach after eating gluten?
Jays911 replied to MelissaNZ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Symptoms really vary. My main one is a nasty cough that usually begins 20-30 minutes after being glutened. But folks I know with GI symptoms report a delayed reaction as not unusual. -
ARCHIVED New to this gluten-free life
Jays911 replied to Calmjm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Kareng is correct. There are also a number of good reference books on celiacs and gluten free issues. Also several magazines. The main thing is to find out the hidden and unusual sources of gluten, and also to be very careful when eating at restaurants. I got glutened quite a few times at restaurants before I learned to triple check and began to find... -
ARCHIVED How long before you know you were glutened?
Jays911 replied to gem1030's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Usually 20-40 minutes. Sometimes sooner, rarely longer. But one of main symptoms is coughing, so that makes it easier to tell. -
There are great gluten-free pizza crusts out there, as well as good dairy free cheese. I find the key is to add good toppings, e.g. meats, carmelized onions, other veggies, white anchovies. Life goes on. Congrats. Hope the good feelings keep up.

About 3 days. But everyone is different.

Once I went gluten free, my anxiety level dropped almost 100%. Brain fog also disappeared. As to yros, you have to check. Some of that meat has gluten in it--some does not. I think they use it as a binding agent in some of the meat. If in doubt, go the chicken route. Healthier, anyway.

ARCHIVED My 11 year old's test results - advice
Jays911 replied to lily414's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Not really. For gluten intolerance, maybe, but for true Celiacs, no. It has been about a year and a half for me. It is very manageable now, although maybe once every two or three months I get glutened. The last time was at a reputable restaurant where I ate spring pea soup, and asked three times about it. As I finished it, I found fragments of bread in the... -
ARCHIVED My 11 year old's test results - advice
Jays911 replied to lily414's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Echoing what the others have said. Keep him on gluten until the testing is done. And if he does have celiacs, that is not a big issue. Once you make the dietary adjustments, life gets much better. Blessings. -
ARCHIVED United Airlines Club Lounge
Jays911 replied to sdlane's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I am platinum for life on American, and since 9-11, they allowed you to bring food into their club. Amex platinum severed their ties with American, and has set up a new series of lounges that, at least the two times I have used them, designated which of their food items are gluten-free. I use the United Club in Houston quite often, and have never had a... -
ARCHIVED Safe food in Kansas/Recommendations NC to Denver?
Jays911 replied to upsilamba's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Another thought. We bought an electric cooler that works great without the mess of ice. It has dual plugs, one for the car charge, and another to run off regular indoor outlets. -
ARCHIVED Safe food in Kansas/Recommendations NC to Denver?
Jays911 replied to upsilamba's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
The Hog Wild BBQ chain has good gluten-free choices. They are based in Wichita but have locations throughout the midwest. I have also had good luck by trying the Mexican places. As long as you stick to corn tortillas and skip the spanish rice, you generally are OK. -
ARCHIVED Are these all celiac symptoms?
Jays911 replied to oli97's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I experienced 4 of the 6. There are hundreds of symptoms. Don't go gluten free yet. Get tested before you do, as it is necessary for proper readings. I hope you get some clarity and relief soon. -
ARCHIVED First Week Gluten Free
Jays911 replied to zenjess1980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hang in there. It gets better. Everyone is different. For me, after 3 days I felt wonderful. I literally glowed with well being. But others take awhile. Give yourself at least 30 days. But know you are improving your life. I could not imagine going back to the pain, depression and brain fog of my pre-gluten-free days. -
ARCHIVED Recovery Time, Non-Gluten Grains and Alcohol
Jays911 replied to JustinSB81's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I never had a problem with either one. -
ARCHIVED Is it worth treating symptoms of glutening?
Jays911 replied to melprkr's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I guess we are blessed here in Omaha. There are safe, gluten-free options at restaurants all over the place. Most are sit down types, but there are chain options as well. Schlotzsky's, Jason's Deli, Panera, Tom-Chee. As to deals not with glutening, when it does happen, I find drinks no extra water helps. As does a bland diet for a few days. Blessings -
ARCHIVED moderate to severe villa damage
Jays911 replied to carle's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed last New Year's Eve. Looking back, I probably had celiacs for at least 20-25 years. It all depends on the person. Mine is only moderate, according to my docs. But I was miserable for years before going gluten-free. -
Colts is spot on. One other tip. I find the better the restaurant. i.e., the higher end it is, the better prepared they are to address gluten-free issues. Most chain restaurants (with a few exceptions, like Schlotzsky's and Jason's Deli) have virtually no safe food. And you will indeed be surprised how many restaurants offer gluten-free menus. But much...

Traveling is an issue. For car trips, I recommend an electric cooler. We bought one that runs both off he car battery and can plug in when you take it inside a hotel or home. I take safe food with me. You can take some food (e.g. gluten-free crackers and snacks) on plane trips as well. Download the gluten free around me app to find safe restaurants on...
