  1. Kame brand Hoisin sauce is gluten-free. And it's fairly easy to find...at least in my experience. I use it on practically everything! Basically all the Kame sauces are gluten-free unless they contain soy sauce. Their added "starch" is from corn. I also recommend the Oyster sauce.
  2. Oh, I LOVE Big Bowel Restaurant! My only complaint is that the lines for the bathrooms are so damn long!
  3. Yeah, that IS a good question. I am a self-confessed Other-tini whore. The more infusions and exotic liqueurs added, the better! But ever since I was diagnosed, I've been really careful about sticking to a classic Vodka martini with a twist...or vodka and soda. But I've long suspected that there probably are plenty of cocktails out there that would...
  4. 7:30 is fine with me. Is anyone else taking the train out from Manhattan? PM me if you want to meet at the station and ride together.
  5. Yep I'm coming. With a possible plus one.

    ARCHIVED Flax Oil

Be careful. I tried flax oil and flax seeds for my eczema a few years ago and it only made it worse. Apparently a LOT of people are allergic to flax. If it works, great. But if you are only getting worse, you might have an allergy to it and you should stop taking it immediately. Also, keep in mind that it has a long half-life in the body so if you are...
  7. The wine shop across the street from me just started carrying "spirits" and one of the vodkas they sell is a potato vodka I'd never heard of before called Luksusowa. It was kinda pricy but I tried it and LOVED it. Then I heard that my wine store did a major markup on it and it's normally a pretty reasonably priced vodka. So if any of you are sensitive...
  8. I can do Saturdays and Wednesdays!
  9. I just started taking probiotics three days ago and I am very pleased. Even though I haven't glutened myself in a while I still get these inexplicable bouts of diarrhea related -- I think -- to a round of antibiotics that I took recently. The probiotics brought me immediate relief and my digestion has been remarkably steady lately. I bought mine from...
  10. Kari, you sound like an awesome waitress! You know on some level, sure, the customer shouldn't have to pay any extra to have his dietary needs taken care of. But on the other hand, when I, a celiac, am taken care of in a restaurant and I leave without being glutened, it usually means that some server has gone the extra mile for me and I tip accordingly...
  11. You mean your aunt, right?
  12. Okay, yeah, there's a lot about this disease to "get depressed" over. But it sounds to me like you are DEPRESSED. I'm all about the pity party (throwing bread at Elony! ) but the intensity of your angst sounds like more than just the average frustrations of a Celiac. Do you know of a good psychiatrist? You might want to talk to him or her about getting...
  13. I also get them when I eat too many salty snacks, MSG or anything citrus-y.
  14. In/Out was singled out in the book "Fast Food Nation" for being a good fast food franchise on many levels -- the beef isn't frozen, they treat their workers really well etc. It's not just the Celiacs who sing its praises. Lots of people who are simply health conscious in general love it. Also, the protein burger is actually a popular item on their...
  15. I hope you feel better soon! I have eaten there (Chestnut Hill Mall) three times since going gluten-free and have never had a problem. However, I have always ordered stuff that would/should be gluten-free anyway like pan-seared scallops with lemon and no sauce, a baked potato etc. For some reason I've always been a little wary of the foods on their Celiac...
  16. Everyone has different degrees of sensitivity to gluten. It may be that you are not that sensitive to gluten and don't have to be as careful as most other celiacs. If you are still finding that you have no symptoms and your blood tests look okay, I don't see any reason to be that vigilant just because a lot of other people are. Personally, I am pretty...
  17. Plus, if you went out with her, you wouldn't have to make her brush her teeth before your first kiss!
  18. The spaghetti and meatballs were soooo good! The best part was, as Mookie pointed out, being able to reach over with our forks and taste each others' food without fear of contamination. Like we waz normal and everything!
  19. And this "fixing" would be required by who? Everyday people go do their doctors and get help for the various ailments that they inheirited from their ancestors -- scoliosis, asthma, glaucoma, psoriasis etc. No one gets their genes "fixed". (P.S. Celiac is considered a genetic disease) Hybridization is very often a man made occurence. Farmers...
  20. That's what I do too. I always figured that slowing down the diarrhea would only lengthen the whole recovery process. I mean, if my body wants all that stuff out of my body that fast, why not let it happen? (Sometimes I even speed things up by drinking coffee.) I should probably add that no one ever advised me to do this so I'm not entirely sure it's...
  21. I always took the "new toaster" advice to mean that you should get a SECOND toaster if you had a family or roommates who use the communal toaster to toast unsafe things. That way there'd be one toaster for non-gluten breads bagels and another for glutenous breads and bagels. I live alone so I just cleaned out my existing toaster oven.
  22. Oh and I'm not saying that the boyfriend was right either. I'm just hearing about this third hand over the internet so what do I know? It's just that when you said that the boyfriend said "she wouldn't eat ANYTHING", I flashed back to crazy Kate not eating anything...because she was claimed everything had gluten in it. To some guys, "not eating anything...
  23. It's entirely possible that this person in question was actually a hypochondriac. Yes, Celiac is a real disease and unfortunately a lot of us are accused of "faking it" -- but there are people out there who don't have Celiac but convince themselves they have it. Hypochondria is a "real disease" as well and I'd imagine that Celiac would be a great disease...
  24. The worst is when people are well intentioned, go out of their way to accomodate me, do research, ask questions and STILL serve me food that makes me sick. It's almost easier when someone is just a dick about the whole thing and tries to serve me pasta. At least then I know where I stand and I don't have any social qualms about leaving, refusing to eat...
  25. Whenever I see a liquor that contains a lot of flavorings, colors and sweeteners, like wine coolers or Irish Cream, I automatically think, there has to be some gluten in there. (Sometimes I feel like the gluten-free version of that creepy guy in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang who is all, "I smell children!") If I don't have one of those lists handy, I just stick...
