@Sabaarya, exactly what antibody tests were done initially that were negative? Just the tTG-IGA or a more complete celiac panel? Also, you've been attempting to eat gluten free long enough now that if you are still having occasional symptoms, it might be a good idea to have another biopsy done to check for compliance and healing of the villi. Studies show...

Actually, I believe the biopsy was the only diagnostic test available for celiac disease until about 30 years ago when the antibody tests were developed. And since most GPs don't do endoscopies, they don't make money by referring their patients to GI docs for endoscopies. -

If you don't mind my asking, if you don't have Crohns, what was the original surgery for that started these adhesions? With a tTG-IGA value as high as yours, it is very likely the biopsy will be positive for celiac disease. -

Are they planning to do anything surgically about the adhesians? That is a common problem after abdominal surgeries and they don't go away by themselves, do they? So, with being on a low fiber, low residue diet it would seem your only option would be laxatives that draw water into the colon. -

Carrots are a good source of fiber. And mashed potatoes have some fiber. Ask the dietician about prunes. They are soft and high in fiber. -

Welcome to the forum, Dawn s D! There is a higher incidence of Crohns in the celiac population. It shouldn't be difficult to get adequate fiber in your diet if you need to give up gluten-containing grains. There are lots of fiber products out there like Metamucil and there are still plenty of non-gluten grains, fruit and vegetables that can take... -
One test that seems to be missing from the celiac panel is total IGA. If that is low, it can drive down the numbers in other IGA tests. And were you consuming regular amounts of gluten in a two month window leading up to the blood draw. Many people make the mistake of beginning the gluten free diet before testing is complete which will invalidate the testing...

I realize I left out a necessary sentence element in order for my last post to make sense. I meant to type: "However, almost half of those with the genetic potential who have a first degree relative (sibling, parent, offspring) with active celiac disease will have or will develop the disease and half of these will be largely asymptomatic ("silent" celiacs...

Alternating between diarrhea and constipation is a classic celiac symptom. Your tTG-IGA is strongly positive. Have you had any genetic testing done for celiac genes? About 40% of the population has one or both of the genes that are associated with celiac disease but only about 1% of the population develop active celiac disease. In addition to having...

Welcome to forum, Debbie! It would be helpful if you would include the reference range for the tTG_IGA value you posted. Each lab uses it's own reference range for negative vs. positive. There is no industry standard. You state the value is positive but with out the reference range we cannot tell for sure whether or not it is a strong positive. In...

It would be nice to have in your medical record so other doctors you may go won't look at you sideways when you tell them you have celiac disease. -
Inconclusive biopsy
trents replied to Jojo78's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
And this is the problem with not having an official diagnosis. People rationalize ways of cheating on their diet. Just about everyone with celiac disease will tell you that once you have become consistent in eating gluten free, you lose whatever tolerance you had for it and when you do get "glutened" it makes you very ill. I can attest to that. -

The proof is in the pudding. You have a positive tTG-IGA and you feel much better after cutting out gluten. What more do you need? Ask the doctor to write in your medical chart that you have celiac disease and tell him you feel no need for the biopsy. He himself has already said you have celiac disease. Just ask him to put it in your chart. -
Inconclusive biopsy
trents replied to Jojo78's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, eliminating or even severely cutting back on gluten for as long as you did will likely sabotage testing, whether it be blood work for detecting celiac antibodies or the endoscopy with biopsy. But, if your symptoms improve when eliminating gluten you either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). They share many of the same symptoms... -

You have probably developed vitamin and mineral deficiencies which you would do well to address with some high potency gluten free supplements. B12, B-complex, D3, Magnesium and Zinc would probably be in order. Do you have Costco where you live? -

Please post back as soon as you get your biopsy results. I am concerned about your health and you cannot continue as you are. -

You need to get some protein in your diet. All you are getting now is a small amount of carbohydrate. -

I do not think that celiac disease would cause pain in the solar plexis or upper abdomen area. If you knew for certain the physician did not want to order in celiac antibody tests I would advise you to ditch the toast and crackers immediately. Why is it that you are only eating toast and crackers? Do other foods cause problems? -

trents replied to Moomooandme13's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac disease certainly can cause pain but may not be the direct cause of the pain you experience. But the fact is, other kinds of painful abdominal and intestinal maladies such as H.Pylori, IBS, Crohns, and SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) are more commonly found in the celiac population than in the general population. When do here back... -

Welcome to the forum, Moomooandme13! There was a question mark at the end of "They said you're being tested for celiac with biopsy?" By that do you mean you are not sure of what they said? Do you l know for sure the biopsy they did was for the purpose of checking for celiac disease? Normally, the first step of celiac diagnosis is a blood draw to... -
I agree. It is a strange study. I still find it hard to believe that people who eliminate wheat from their diet are going to be really challenged in compensating the nutritional loss associated with enriched flour. That is, unless wheat products were the main part of their diet to begin with. I possibly can see it in third world settings but not otherwise...

You might find this interesting: https://www.verywellhealth.com/celiac-disease-and-liver-diseases-562618 Ideally, your next diagnostic step would be to have an endoscopy with biopsy done to check for damage to the villi that line the small bowel. This is considered to be the gold standard diagnostic step for celiac disease. But in view of your job...
