  1. Autumn, make sure you're eating enough! Too little and your body will start to conserve fat, even though the scale might say you're losing. Be careful!!!
  2. Hi Cathy, Eating that much in a binge isn't exactly ideal... it's probably far from ideal, but I know that I will likely binge every month or so, so I might as well make sure it's not more than that. If you're satisfied by less calories, then it only helps to not eat that many. That's my goal: to work on making my binges smaller. And sure, you could...
  3. kbabe, I'm going to try that right now. I've got my fingers crossed! Ruth, I'm trying to think of something that I do everyday. The only thing I can think of is making coffee in their coffeemaker. Maybe I should make it at home, pour into a huge thermos and just reheat during the day? That's the only thing I can think of, especially if it is the parts...
  4. Were you super hungry or just tempted? Lara bars aren't horrible for you, but they have no protein - all they are are carbs (from all the sugar in dried fruit) and fats (from nuts). I bet something with protein would have satisfied you more. I love lara bars, so I understand the temptation!
  5. Hi everyone! I'd like to join. I have a problem bingeing on sweets because before I went gluten-free (and for most of the months after it), I couldn't handle any dairy and only the slightest bit of fat, so I hadn't had any desserts in several years. Now it is hard for me to not eat thousands of calories in one sitting if I allow myself even one bite. Because...
  6. Hi Ursula and Sandy - Urusla, I wish I could babysit for her at my house, but he has an older daughter that I have to watch for an hour in the morning before school and an hour and a half in the evening after school. And they live about 30 minutes away, so it would be about 2 hours of driving every day. Sandy, it's more of a sharp stabbing pain in the...
  7. I forgot to mention that we have separate colanders, except for two of the new silicone ones that we share. I'm unsure about whether the silicone ones are safe to use for both of us... but I know that silicone doesn't "hold" gluten, and we wash them very well even before putting them in the dishwasher.
  8. Hi everyone - Since Christmas, where I got glutened multiple times over a week, I've not felt consistently well. Usually it takes me about a week to get over a glutening. I realize it could take longer because I was glutened so much. But I've not had normal glutening symptoms. Somewhat normal, but not quite. Usually, a glutening is followed by a week...
  9. My husband eats gluten, but only in the form of sandwich bread or bagels - no flour or mixes made with flour because the flour gets in the air and makes me sick. If you want to keep a general purpose mix around for muffins and such, buy Pamela's Ultimate Baking Mix. I can't have it anymore (because it contains xanthan gum) but it's really good. Here's...
  10. Is there any chance you can get a note from your doctor to include with your note? My first thought would be to say that your kid couldn't go if you couldn't chaperone, but she'd probably hate that...
  11. To be honest, I wouldn't bother with a gluten-free wedding cake. We got married in June and had a large wedding. There was no way that I was going to bake a cake for 200 people nor was there a certified gluten-free bakery in the area. So we got a really good baker who baked our bride & grooms cakes and everyone LOVED them. I, obviously, did not eat any...
  12. YES! Isn't it funny how much the bloating goes down at times? I eat loads of veggies, but I do notice that raw salad greens help some. Good luck!
  13. Yup, I should have mentioned this. But I'm pretty sure you have to have a prescription for it to buy it anyway. We buy it from our vet and tried to buy it from Pet Smart one time and they wouldn't let us without a prescription. At the vet, they always ask our name and our pet's name before they let us check out. That said, my cat is so fat that this seems...
  14. The email I got: Dear : Thank you for visiting HillsPet.com and contacting us with your question. Your interest in our company and our products is greatly appreciated. There is no gluten in the Hill's
  15. Pleasant topic, I know... Mine has gotten *better* since going gluten-free, but it's still pretty bad. I finally have put two and two together to find that dairy seems to plug me up, so I've severely limited the amount I'm eating, sadly. What do you take to keep things going? I take magnesium supplements - the dosage I vary based on how...
  16. Ok, mine is pretty simple and reinforces what others have said: I want recipes for things that aren't easy to adapt. Basically, baked goods, sauces & condiments. I find that most "gluten-free" recipes are not very good and that I'm much better off at adapting recipes that weren't made to be gluten-free. I'm so excited about this!
  17. Hi there and congrats on your 3 weeks gluten-free! I don't use bread - I use mission white corn tortillas. They're small, so I put the sandwich toppings on them and then fold in half to eat like a taco. Not traditional, but they're incredibly cheap, taste good, don't soak up all your toppings, and don't crumble.
  18. Hi everyone - I'm pretty sure my cat's food is gluten-free - which I'm happy to see, because i find her hair in my food, mouth, EVERYWHERE. She's on Hill's Prescription Diet r/d Feline and here are the ingredients: Chicken By-Product Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Powdered Cellulose 18.8% (source of fiber), Chicken Liver Flavor, Soybean Oil,...
  19. I'm surprised (but a little jealous!) that you don't get glutened all the time. Gluten doesn't have to be visible to be there. I can't eat anything that is even made on the same counter as a piece of bread!
  20. Ok, I see the product you're talking about. It looks/sounds like it's just a pre-mixed version of Bette Hagman's mix. You should really start mixing your own - it's so easy and much cheaper (usually).
  21. I bet you have the answer to my non-rising dough! I will try the hot tap water in a pan in the oven next time I make it! Thanks!!!
  22. I think jayhawkmom is referring to Bette Hagman's mix in the above post. For a cake, I'd use Bette's featherlight flour mix. 1/2 c. Rice flour 1/2 c. cornstarch 1/2 c. tapioca starch 2.5 tsp. potato flour (NOT potato starch)
  23. I made this this morning and it was SO good. Great texture. It was a tad bit underbaked in the middle, though, so I'll bake it for 5 minutes longer next time. Only problem: It didn't rise at all before I baked it. Maybe half an inch. I let it rise for a little over 80 minutes and nothing. Two things that could have contributed to that: I used cold milk...
  24. I got sick twice from Russel Stover's candy (the kind that said it is processed on the same equip. as wheat on the box). I would NOT eat it again. On that note, Reeses Peanut Butter Hearts are gluten-free. My husband has been instructed to get me approximately 10 lbs of reeses peanut butter hearts. Yum!
