ARCHIVED Movie Theater Popcorn?
momandgirls replied to JennyC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We ask what kind of oil they use (not because of gluten but because of a peanut allergy) and ask for the popcon plain. We eat the plain popcorn and have soda at the movies all the time and have never had a problem. -
ARCHIVED Sanitary Napkins/pads
momandgirls replied to Juliebove's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You only have to worry if the product containing gluten is somehow going to get to her gut. Unless you are ingesting the pad, it doesn't matter what it is made out of. -
ARCHIVED Which Cupcakes Are Good?
momandgirls replied to sammers1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Namaste's chocolate cake is absolutely the best - at family gatherings, the gluten eaters are the ones to request me to bring the cake! One of my daughter's friends told her mother that the Namaste chocolate cake was the best cake she'd ever had - little did she know it was gluten and dairy free! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Casein Free Pie Cookie Crust?
momandgirls replied to Green12's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We've done it several times and use Earth Balance. -
ARCHIVED Some Good News, Some Bad News
momandgirls replied to Idiote Savante Goddess's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Genetic testing will not tell you whether you have Celiac Disease. It will only tell you if the have the genetic make up for the disease. A huge portion of the population carry the genes for Celiac - most will never develop the disease. A genetic test can, however, rule out Celiac. -
ARCHIVED Erewhon Cereal?
momandgirls replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
We eat it all the time - our favorite is the crispy rice with berries. -
We eat the gluten free oatmeal with no problems - you have to make sure you use certified gluten free oats, though.

Red Robin restaurants have fries on their gluten free menu. Sometimes we make the hour trip to our closest one just for the fries! Also, in the summers anyway, we've found that it's pretty easy to find fries at agricultural fairs and places like that. There are often stands that sell french fries only.

In terms of genetic testing for Celiac, Children's Hospital in Boston exclusively uses Prometheus. -
ARCHIVED Purell Hand Sanitizer
momandgirls replied to Nic's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The MRSA germ is killed by bleach and water. The best way to avoid an MRSA infection is with old fashioned soap and water and washing for a long enough period of time (as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice). If you know you might be in contact with someone with an MRSA infection (like someone in school), make sure you wash your hands very well... -
ARCHIVED Purell Hand Sanitizer
momandgirls replied to Nic's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The best way to clean your hands is with old fashioned soap and water. To get them really clean, you should wash them for as long as it takes you to sing Happy Birthday two times. Hand sanitizers should not replace hand washing but they do a very good job of killing germs if washing is not possible. Kids often do not wash their hands for a long enough period... -
ARCHIVED Promethius Lab Vs Enterolab
momandgirls replied to MammaW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ursa Major - It's not worth fighting with you...you are certainly entitled to your opinion...just as I am to mine. -
ARCHIVED Promethius Lab Vs Enterolab
momandgirls replied to MammaW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Prometheus uses its own lab. It uses blood for genetic testing. Enterolab uses stool samples. Enterolab has no credibility because Dr. Fine has never published any of his findings and he is not affiliated with any major medical center or hospital. Until he has published his findings or even had some peer reviews, he will never be deemed credible by the medical... -
Yes, all the rice is gluten free at PF Changs. It's just rice and water.

ARCHIVED Promethius Lab Vs Enterolab
momandgirls replied to MammaW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My insurance had no problem covering the cost of Prometheus for my daughter and I. This is how we did it. I called Prometheus first and they gave me the insurance codes of the genetic tests. Then, I called my insurance company, told them the doctor ordered the tests and told them the codes that Prometheus gave me. She told me over the phone the insurance... -
ARCHIVED Promethius Lab Vs Enterolab
momandgirls replied to MammaW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We had genetic testing done through Promethius. They were very professional on the phone (and I had many questions) and the test results came quickly and were easy to read. My insurance covered the cost (though I did call them before hand to get the cost authorized). Personally, I do not trust Enterolab (never published results, not affiliated with any hospital... -
If you had gallbladder disease, you would be in severe pain. If you aren't, it is probably due to something you ate. Purple and blue food coloring will also give you green poop (artificially colored drinks and candy, colored medicine, etc.).

ARCHIVED Dr Is Suggesting Invasive Tests-----need Advice
momandgirls replied to dinali63's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
People with peanut allergies aren't subjected to this kind of nonsense. If they have one reaction, they are immediately told to stay away from any and all peanuts. They aren't told that it's in their head, or that they MUST endure invasive and expensive procedures before they are "allowed" to take peanuts out of their diets. -
ARCHIVED Self Disgnosis
momandgirls replied to woolwhippet's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A gene test will only tell you if the carry the genetic make up for Celiac Disease. It will not tell you whether or not you have the disease. Most people carry the genetic make up for Celiac Disease, most will never develop the disease. The only way to be "officially" diagnosed is through a doctor and most will require a biopsy - or at least bloodwork. -
ARCHIVED We Found A Gf Cake
momandgirls replied to darlindeb25's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We've had their cakes, too, and they're really good. We particularly like the lemon roll. They can be found in Boston at the Butcherie in Brookline. They're in the freezer section. -
ARCHIVED Newbie Here...should I Buy A Bread Machine?
momandgirls replied to gfmomof3's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We have the Zojirushi bread machine (it's least expensive through Amazon) and we absolutely love it. We could never find a bought bread that was palatable so we always make our bread. Breads by Anna or Pamela's wheat free amazing bread mix are our favorites. In the machine, I just dump in the ingredients and set the machine for 3 1/2 hours and it's perfect... -
ARCHIVED Stories That Make You Smile
momandgirls replied to Lissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ok...I have one... Smugglers Notch, near Stowe, VT, is a year round resort that my family's been going to for about 35 years. Anyway, last summer, I was taking my girls to camp and ran into a man who I knew was fairly high up in management at Smugglers. Anyway, I also knew he was very nice so I struck up a conversation with him and told him about food allergies... -
ARCHIVED Enterolabs?
momandgirls replied to daron5780's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's up to you to decide if Dr. Fine is credible...personally, no, I don't think he is. He is not accepted by the medical community. He has not published any papers, published no peer reviews, is not affiliated with or supported by any university or health care facility or hospital. And I disagree with the above poster - it IS important to be published. If...
