I know that if anyone has read my posts before they will think my family is obsessed with fried rice. But, my son misses chinese food terribly and he has been a little down lately about what he can and can't eat (he is 6). So we thought maybe we will go to PF Chang's this weekend but I do not see fried rice on the gluten free menu and if he cannot have...

ARCHIVED Good Example Of A Little Bit Of Knowlege Being Dangerous
Nic replied to mamatide's topic in Publications & Publicity
Could it be that going gluten free will help hot flashes if the hot flashes were caused by gluten symptoms and not the hot flashes that are caused by normal hormone changes such as menapause? I have heard from a few people here that they had hot flashes prior to going gluten free. Nicole -
ARCHIVED Bread And Corn Tortillas Worth Buying
Nic replied to mominbaltimore's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We have been using Ener G Foods lite tapioca bread. My son loves it for french toast and grilled cheese. He is not much of a sandwich kid so I don't know how good it is for a sandwich. Nicole -
ARCHIVED A Question For Parents With Dairy Free Families
Nic replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, sorry I did not reply sooner, I haven't been on in a few days. Back in July my ped. gastro felt it was unlikely that he was lactose intolerant but did run a RAST test to see if is was an allergy which came up negative. I then started using Lactaid to see if he would improve. Throughout the summer he was doing remarkably better which I of course gave... -
ARCHIVED Frustrated With Results, Where Do We Go From Here?
Nic replied to Pennyb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Could it be an intolerance to something else (eggs, dairy, etc.)? My son was diagnosed almost 2 years ago. Last school year (which was within his first year of diagnosis) he caught everything that came his way. I think I even posted on here my concerns asking if anyone else saw this with their children and is it immune system related. Good luck, sorry... -
ARCHIVED Would Like More Info...
Nic replied to MrsYoung84's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
No, she will never out grow it and it never goes away. There is talk of different medications that are in the works (still not done with trials) that would allow a Celiac to ingest some gluten but I don't believe they are intended to allow the Celiac to eat a gluten filled diet. The gluten free diet is their way of like. Nicole -
ARCHIVED Found New gluten-free Cereal Today!
Nic replied to ptkds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Someone above posted a link to General Mills and on that link was a list of cereals. I was looking at Cocoa Puffs because my son was heart broken when they put the wheat back in (I actually ran around to all of the supermarkets and bought as many boxes as I could before the new "wheat" boxes came on the shelves ). Anyway, the link showed the ingredients... -

Nic replied to MrsYoung84's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If your child does in fact have Celiac you will find that the diet is not that difficult especially if you are changing her diet at such a young age. She will never remember anything else. Besides the foods that are naturally gluten free there are so many companies that make all of the good childhood treats and my son does not know the difference anymore... -
ARCHIVED Virtually Asymptomatic Child
Nic replied to Lindsay GFMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just recently had my 4 year old son tested because his 6 year old brother has Celiac and was diagnosed at 4. It was very traumatic for him, he acted like we were trying to kill him, BUT, once we were in the car and he was dividing up all the stickers they gave him (one for him and his brother, and then he needed one for each of his cousins ), he was... -
If you don't feel comfortable letting your roommates wash your dishes then maybe just buy your own plate, bowl, and cup. Label them as yours and make sure everyone knows they are off limits to them and then wash them seperately. I use both a dish washer or I hand wash depending on how many dishes I have and my son never has been glutened this way. Nicole

ARCHIVED Benefiber
Nic replied to Nic's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I called Benefiber to ask about their gluten free label even though it contain wheat dextrin. The response was rediculous. She said that it is technically gluten free as it only has 10 ppm and it needs to be over 20 to be seen as containing gluten. But, if you are completely intolerant to gluten it may cause a problem. What? Completely intolerant? Does... -
Before my son went gluten free we always gave him Benefiber for his constipation. I ran out of his fiber bears and I have Benefiber in the house. It says: "Ingredients: Wheat dextrin" but then under that it says "Gluten free (less than 10ppm gluten)". What does that mean? It does not contain enough gluten to be concidered a source of gluten? The Trader Joes near me is only like 15 minutes away but I hate going there because I work all week and on the weekends they are so crowded. So when I go for the pasta I buy 10 bags for $20.00 and that lasts me for quite a while. Then I do not have to go back again too soon. Nicole

My house is not completely gluten free either. My husband just can't give up the gluten . But my "snack" cabinet only contain gluten free snacks. My Celiac son does not even see the food that is in the house that contains gluten (unless it is something he would never eat anyway). Anything he would like, that also contains gluten, is hidden on top of...

As a teacher, when I first started reading this, I thought maybe the teacher is trying to make sure everyone eats on the morning of the test (you would be surprised how many parents are not feeding their children in the morning). For example, when I taught 5th grade I always brought in cereal bars on testing days and handed them out during homeroom. But...

ARCHIVED Do You Really Need To Send Your Blood Work Out To Other Labs?
Nic replied to janelyb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My insurance company insists that we use LabCorp and if we go elsewhere, it will be at an "out of network" charge. Which means they will pay 70% of only what they feel is a appropriate charge. So while 70% sounds good, it may not be if the insurance company does not think what the lab is charging is appropriate. My ped. gastro originally sent my son's... -
ARCHIVED Not Sure Where I Belong?
Nic replied to Rook's Mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I tried going to the Tinyada web site and ordering but you can't, unless I just don't know how. I also tried e mailing them twice about ordering because I wanted their grande shells to make stuffed shells with. They never responded. If you have a trader joes by you their brown rice pasta is as good if not better, just a little stickier when cooking so... -
We are more just North of being Central Jersey. If you have ever heard of Newark, we are about 15 minutes away. We are also about 20 minutes from NYC.

My Celiac son misses Chinese food terribly. So I called a Chinese Restaurant in the next town over, called Lun Wah and asked them if they would be willing to cook for my son using gluten-free soy sauce that we bring in and a clean pan. They took all my info. including my name and what time we would be coming. When we walked in one of the workers walked...

ARCHIVED How Many Of Your Children Have Celiac?
Nic replied to Sillyyakdidi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My father has Celiac. I carry the gene but do not have it (yet anyway). My oldest son has it but my youngest tested negative for the gene. Nicole -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Chicken Finger Breading
Nic replied to vampella's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use the Ener-G foods bread crumbs and follow the recipe for crispy chicken. They come very good. I also bread fish this way. Nicole -
Hi, just to make you feel better, my son's blood work came back showing Celiac. The doc (gastro) felt the biopsy would prove Celiac. It did not. It wasn't even inconclusive, it was just "negative". Thank goodness my gastro. did not stop here and sent it (the biopsy) to Columbia University in NYC. The re-examined the biopsy and gave him a positive diagnosis...

ARCHIVED How Quickly Would A gluten-free Diet Start Healing Damage Done To The Vili
Nic replied to girlfromclare's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just to point out, my cousin who is not a Celiac is a twin. As a child he had a terrible intorlerance to sugar. It caused him to be very aggressive. As a toddler he was dragging his twin brother around by his hair. His mother had to make all of their desserts will other sweeteners rather than sugar. The behavior stopped completely after the diet change... -
Late yesterday I figured since the Endo. doc only left a message on my machine I would call him back to make sure there is nothing else to look for. He of course said no but went on to say that the night sweats and the wakefulness may be a personality thing . What? So it is part of his personality that he cannot stay asleep and he is drowning in his...

So I talked to the pediatrician this morning and told him how the endo. doc didn't want to test for anything because of his height. I asked what we should do now. He said, "well, I guess diet and exercise. That just infurates me because he does not eat badly and gets enough exercise (between gymnastics, gym class, physical therapy, and just playing). ...
