ARCHIVED Jello
penguin replied to Lister's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They should be. Read the label - any gluten will be clearly listed as wheat, barley, rye, or oats, since Jello is owned by Kraft. -
They use egg derivatives (I'm assuming the albumen) in the IV drugs for drug delivery.

ARCHIVED People Really Do Listen, Yay
penguin replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I take the make-it-seem-like-their-idea approach. I've found this method particularly handy for doctors . Bring up how much better you're feeling, and that you didn't realize how connected to everything gluten and celiac was. Casually mention that you've read that celiac can cause neuro and psychological problems, even without a classic presentation...... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Alert!
penguin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This was sent out to Clan Thompson SmartList subscribers: -
Some medicines, like pepto bismol, can cause black stools.

Ha, if we all had good luck, none of us would be here! It won't be so bad, it's less than 24 hours away, so at least it's short-term suffering.

ARCHIVED What About Remission?
penguin replied to seattlecdfriend's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I like to compare celiac to type 1 diabetes. In both, the body attacks it's own tissue, and in both, lifetime maintenence is required. Just like a type 1 diabetic can't go into remission and never have to take insulin everyday, a celiac can't go into remission and stop eating gluten-free. The gluten-free diet is a celiac's insulin. (sorry to all... -
ARCHIVED Is Beer A Trigger For Celiac's?
penguin replied to capecodda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All woodchuck ciders are gluten-free All Ace ciders are gluten-free -
ARCHIVED Itchy Mouth When Glutened?
penguin replied to JennFog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might have developed an allergy to wheat in your time gluten-free. I get an itchy mouth and hives when I get gluten now, I must have developed an allergy. Next time it happens, I'd take some benadryl ASAP! -
ARCHIVED Canadian Parents
penguin replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The Dallas ROCK group came up with this (there's a link to the pdf at the top) Open Original Shared Link disease=1 I know you're in Canada, but maybe it'll help anyway. -
ARCHIVED Going Crazy - Help Me Find The Gluten
penguin replied to tsomo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'd guess the dog food. Even if you don't feed the dog, watch him eat one day. There are probably crumbs in his muzzle, on his paws, if he licks you, etc. McCormick spices are gluten-free, and they clearly label gluten as well. -
ARCHIVED Hornsby's Hard Cider
penguin replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All woodchuck ciders are safe. Ace ciders are all safe as well -
Here's the response I got from emailing Outback, same answer, different person: G'day, Thank you for your e-mail. Sorry you were misinformed. Outback Steakhouse is updating our gluten free menus for our stores. Copies will soon be available to them. I've attached a copy of the gluten-free menu to this email. Our website, www.outback.com, also...

ARCHIVED Alternative Cure? Or Am I Just Hopeful?
penguin replied to tailz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just read all of these posts...sheesh... There is a place for western medicine and a place for alternative medicine. There are plenty of quacks and snake oil salesmen in both. Remember that you can't believe everything you read on the internet. -
Foodies over here know that Ragu isn't just a cheap bottled sauce, but since consumer culture prevails, that's what most people think of. Basically, what most people call spaghetti sauce over here is bolognese sauce. Just like in England crisps are chips and chips are french fries. My sister got in trouble with her British inlaws once when she...

(this information was originally posted in the Bearer of Bad News thread, but I want to make sure everyone sees it) I just got off the phone with a very nice woman named Leila at OSI Restaurant Partners, which is the umbrella company for Outback. She was flabbergasted that there is a rumor going around that they are getting rid of the gluten-free menu...

It's my understanding that they're changing the gluten-free menu, not getting rid of it altogether. I sent an email to corporate, I'll let you know when/if I hear back from them. *EDIT* I just got off the phone with a very nice woman named Leila at OSI Restaurant Partners, which is the umbrella company for Outback. She was flabbergasted that there...

A stingray barb pierced his heart while filming a documentary, ironically, about deadly sea creatures. Very tragic, freak accident.

ARCHIVED Hypoglycemia - Need Fresh Advice
penguin replied to VydorScope's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Reactive hypoglycemia does NOT do well on no carb. I've been a reactive hypoglycemic for about 10 years now, and sorry, that doesn't work. Aside from being absolute hell on your kidneys, the body needs both protein and carbs. Hypoglycemics just need to be careful about the TYPES of carbs they consume. An omlette and a bag of skittles is a bad choice, but... -
ARCHIVED Shocking Story #2
penguin replied to concerned-mom061's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
*sigh* there was no reason for this thread to get heated -
ARCHIVED Bleu Cheese
penguin replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mold is not borderline for celiacs. The only reason a celiac would have an issue with mold is if they're allergic to it. Even then, many people with mold allergies (me, for example) can eat cheese. If you want to cut out all foods with mold, I suggest cutting out cheese, any nuts, peanuts, fruit juice, and basically everything grown on God's green Earth.... -
ARCHIVED Metamucil Question
penguin replied to orhs66's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Konsyl is what my gastro reccommended for me, it's 100% pure psyllium husks (same as metamucil), but it has no sweeteners in it at all. It's also gluten-free. I have the Clan Thompson list for my palm and I really like it, definitely worth the investment. -

Thank God, that's wonderful! -
ARCHIVED Walmart Great Value Brands
penguin replied to ilmotherof2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's probably because hardly anybody that works for wal mart corporate actually shops there. Seriously, I've lived where corporate is, and have friends that have worked there. Oh, and companies that want major distribution in their stores have to have a home office in northwest arkansas, where walmart corporate is.
