  1. Hi, Alvin, welcome aboard! All your symptoms certainly could be celiac, or at least gluten intolerance (many feel that the only difference is what stage you're at). If they disappear on a strict gluten-free diet, that is your answer and you wouldn't need any additional testing. From what I have read, celiac has been almost unheard of in Asian countries...
  2. Ah, but there's a catch: you can only make 7 munchkins at a time, and it's rather time-consuming. I made a whole recipe of cake batter (gluten-free, of course), and it's taken me 4 days to use it all! (I figured it would keep in the fridge in an airtight container for at least 4 days.) And that's with a husband and 3 kids snarfing down every gluten...
  3. I'm definitely getting fat from these things....
  4. I'm still tweaking the recipe. I made more today, using 3 cups of my homemade pancake mix (it's floating around the board somewhere, I know I've posted it, but I would think you could use any pancake mix, and cake mix would be the easiest), 2 cups of sugar, a cup of milk, and a cup of oil, and then I glazed them (2 cups of powdered sugar, some orange juice...
  5. Yes, but I don't think vaccines can be ruled out as a factor since the parents, especially the mothers, likely HAVE been vaccinated, and if the vaccine is still "live" in the mother while she is pregnant, it can cross the placenta. When I was pregnant with my oldest son, my doctor was very angry that I hadn't been given an MMR before getting pregnant...
  6. The metal pans do work well for quick breads--but for some reason, they don't for yeast breads with gluten-free flours. I don't know why. This is something Annalise Roberts wrote about, and I think she had some kind of logical explanation for it, too, but I can't remember what it was. I know all my yeast gluten-free breads flopped until I bought the...
  7. Could your oven be malfunctioning? Do you have an oven thermometer? What kind of yeast do you use? Quick-rise yeast does not work well with gluten-free flours. For that matter, neither do metal baking pans--do you have a glass one? Glass ones work best. The recipe might seem a bit confusing because it calls for an all-purpose gluten-free flour blend...
  8. I know you've had a very rough time--I hope things continue to go well for you. Thanks for keeping us posted!
  9. Use your favorite recipe from your gluten days, and for the bread crumbs substitute an equal amount (or slightly less) of: 1) mashed potato flakes or 2) crushed chips (we like Dorito's Cool Ranch) or 3) cooked rice For future meatloaves, save gluten-free breads that you didn't like. Crumble the remains into ziploc freezer bags, and use for meatloaf...
  10. I did some research on the MMR. The reason 2 doses are required is that 5% of the children who receive the first dose do not mount an immune response. I could not find any studies indicating that the second dose is effective for those 5%. And the 95% who don't even need the second dose are supposedly required to have it because of those 5%. If...
  11. It works! It works! It really works!!!!! I made pancake batter, and it worked very nicely, but I wanted something more doughnutty, so I added more pancake mix, sugar, vanilla, and more oil to my batter, so it was more like cake batter, and it worked fantastically well. THEY TASTED LIKE REAL DOUGHNUT HOLES!!! I tried rolling them in cinnamon sugar...
  12. I went to Gluuteny today--and they were closed!!!! There was a sign in the window saying, "Closed due to power upgrade." Maybe they blew a fuse? I would suggest calling before going to make sure that they are open! (I should have done that...) Soergel's farm market in Wexford (on Brandt School Road just off the Wexford Exit of I-79) carries...
  13. I just bought one at Bed Bath & Beyond (love those 20% off coupons!)! I'll let you know how it turns out....
  14. Common enemy? Naah, hadn't thought of it that way. I just figured if they had so much energy, I should make them put it to good use and do something constructive with it.
  15. You're right--there's another thread about Gluuteny floating around somewhere! But, hey, the more publicity, the better, right?
  16. You are SO right! In January of '06, I was hit-and-run by a car while riding my bicycle, resulting in severe shoulder injuries. The orthopedist patted me on the head and told me I'd be fine, and that he didn't need to order any additional tests, as he knew exactly what I'd done, I'd dislocated my shoulder but all I needed was a month in a sling. ...
  17. I tell my boys that one more demonstration of not being able to work things out will result in their each having to clean the bathrooms (we have 2). Their behavior is not yet where I want it to be, but it has improved, as has the state of my bathrooms! And wonder of wonders, I think they actually enjoy cleaning, especially when they're mad.
  18. Kinnikinnick makes really good frozen chocolate-frosted gluten-free donuts--I think you can order them through their website.
  19. You might pm Ursa Major--she is our resident expert on nightshades and lectins!
  20. I never used lists, not even when I was first diagnosed. I just read labels like a maniac (and learned to pack a magnifying glass in my purse, even though I don't *yet* need reading glasses!). There are so many things that can change overnight, and so many things that you wouldn't expect to have gluten that often do, like tuna salad ( ), that I think...
  21. People with Down's Syndrome have pinkies that curve inward (which would make it appear smaller) and are sometimes missing an entire joint, which really makes the pinkies smaller. It's one of the markers they check at birth.
  22. Generic or store-brand ibuprofen gives me diarrhea, but, for some reason, the brand-names (Motrin and Advil) do not. Still, I would not continue taking ibuprofen AT ALL, and I think you need to find out what is causing the neck pain in the first place before masking it with drugs. How are you doing today? Please let us know--I'm getting worried...
  23. I wouldn't take it, either. What I would like to know is, what is causing the pain in the first place? My big beef with pharmaceuticals in the first place is that you are just masking symptoms, so whatever is causing your pain is still there.. Would a chiropractor be able to help?
  24. I actually called them up and told them this--they had no idea. They didn't want to reschedule, as they have had to push the date back so many times already. I suggested that they at least put up a sign saying they would stay open late that Saturday so that the locals can stop by after break-the-fast. If I was the only one who notified them, they may...
  25. There's no reason you can't bring a pasta salad made with rice pasta. They'd never know if you didn't tell them! Deviled eggs should be fine, and lox and cream cheese are fine, too. You can bring regular bagels for them and Kinnikinnick bagels for you, or you can do cucumber slices shmeared with cream cheese with a bit of lox on top, and have some cucumber...
