  1. Licensed hairdresser advice, do the skin patch test. Tell the stylist you are a very sensitive person and you are willing to come in and do the test. Ask for about a 15 minute appointment for color consultation and choose the color (s). The color is then mixed in a smaller quantity and applied to the skin behind the ear, and left on for the processing...
  2. Hey Jackie, Wow that's pretty insensitive for someone to say. You are human. Feelings get hurt by insensitive comments. You're not going to eat rat poison, even if it tastes good. It isn't the first time or the last time you are going to have to deal with ignorance. You will find your own way of dealing with narrow minded people. Laura
  3. Check out Amy's website. www.amys.com This food company has been trying to make it easier for college kids to eat on special diets. They have a section for college kids. Laura
  4. It's true nobody needs bread. I find when my child is invited to a birthday party, that is serving pizza and birthday cake, it is nice to have gluten free pizza and gluten-free cake. Children are offered candy and sweets all the time. I always try to have something gluten free on hand all the time. It makes the adjustment easier, and the life long habits...
  5. Have you checked www.tccsg.com ? I haven't had any response from any of the support groups that I found listed in the past either, you are in a different area though. Laura
  6. The best gluten free dounts are from Celiac Specialties Bakery in Chesterfield, Michigan and they can be ordered on-line. (Way better than KInnickinnick!) Sorry about the disaterious love affair thing this morning. Laura
  7. check www.epicurious.com I can't find the recipe I used from that site, but it was easy to make and tasted good too. I don't have all the restrictions you have, and I use Kraft most of the time. Laura
  8. I joined a co-op, and I'm very glad I did. You have to think long term because you're buying in bulk. I'm saving on gas. I'm not impulse buying. I have no problem buying from the most popular gluten free brands. I can even afford the organic brands. Kinnikncik tappioca rice bread 21.5 ounce for $4.06 instead of $6 plus. www.unitedbuyingclubs.com You...
  9. I have never been diagnosed with that, but I have had the chest pain since 1997. The doctors just kept saying I had a viral infection. Now I have a rib that just sticks out. If it gets too far out of place I go to a chiropractor, because I have difficluty breathing. L.
  10. Sorry you had to pay for a statistic 100%
  11. My sister, who will not get tested for celiac disease, has all ready had a dental bone graft and gum grafting at 30 some years of age. If malabsorbtion of nutrients is a cause, then there is an obvious connection. Laura

    ARCHIVED I'm Pregnant!

Congratulations!!! When is the baby(s?) due? Laura
  13. There is a link between celiac disease and autoimmune thyroid disease. I used to get the feeling of "flip-flops" in my chest and it was diagnosed as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, under-active thyroid. Laura
  14. What Richard posted is true to the best of my knowledge at this time. The flu vaccine changes from year to year and you should read the vaccine package insert to make sure it is safe and effective for you ,personally, with your health history. Be sure to read the contraindications. Laura
  15. Watch your diet, maintain the strictest gluten free diet possible. Breastmilk does contain antibodies from the mother. I breastfed my daughter before both of us were diagnosed. She lost weight rapidly after she was weaned, and the affects of Celiac began rapidly taking it's toll on her. The fat of breastmilk is the most digestable fat for your child,...
  16. My daughter has both DQ2 and DQ8. That suggests it was from both mother and father doesn't it? You only need to have one gene to be diagnosed. Laura
  17. I think doctors consider Prometheus labs more seriously than Enterolab. I was not happy with Prometheus.
  18. Jackie, I read your story and have to tell you until the end, I thought the friends were my age. (30 something) I have conversations like that all the time. You are right when you say you are better educated because of your Celiac diagnoses. Laura
  19. Your theories are both very interesting. They both have some points mentioned in health studies. I want to take your theories a step further. So what if when we ingest gluten... the body produces X toxin, being mostly malnourished -our bodies don't absorb or produce Y which is needed take break down X toxin. Then the X toxin overworks the liver...
  20. It is my pleasure to help. You did ask about growth and age of diagnoses of other children. My daughter was diagnosed at 17 months. She did not gain any weight form 7 months til the start of the gluten free diet at about 16 months. (She lost weight during that time and her height did keep creeping up slowly.) She had a major growth spurt and weight gain...
  21. The slow or stunted growth associated with Celiac disease is most likely due to a calcium defiency. Another reason for the calcium defiency, on a gluten diet, the celiac can not absorb the fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin D (critical in the absorbtion of calcium). The good news... The body can repair itself. The bone density in children is shown...
  22. Have you considered potato flakes as a thickener or are you starting from a roux base? Try the gluten free flour mixes. Laura

    ARCHIVED Gf Burn-out

It would be odd if you didn't feel this way. You are going through so many changes, feelings, and your body is trying to heal. Most books describe it as grieving for your past life. How many of us have actually cried walking into a grocery store? I do suggest that you read Danna Korn's Kids with Celiac Disease. (Haven't read Wheat Free worry Free yet...
  24. Well celiac3270, I'm your first reserved copy. See if you can use Kaiti's liquid cleaner on the pizza analogy to her friends for your book. I just made the cheesecake recipe of yours today... AWESOME!!! Laura
  25. I just keep a glue stick handy.
