What type of hypothyroid? If it is an auto-immune disease, ie Hashimoto's thyroiditis she should be researching auto-immune related disorders. She should also consider being screened for Celiac. I have had good results starting at the mayo clinic's web page for research. L.

ARCHIVED Can Potateo Flour Be Used As Direct Sub For Wheat?
mommida replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have you looked into bean flour? L. -
I asked the doctor about a yeast overgrowth in my daughter. She was on antibiotics recently and he said she has a yeast overgrowth then. He proceeded to then not validate that by doing no tests and saying to come back in 8 months. Hmmm. What do you think the oods are that we will ever be back to that office? Laura

ARCHIVED "offical" Results On My Son...
mommida replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wish I had refused trying to keep my daughter on gluten for the tests. She didn't make it long enough through the gluten eating before she was hospitalized for dehydration. Don't risk the health of your child any more for tests that aren't that accurate (age of your child). As for a gluten challenge, I'm sure that some type of accidental gluten ingestion... -
ARCHIVED New Here
mommida replied to rhondaslusher1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well I actually started laughing at the doctor's office. I brought in the article on gluten ataxia, candidasis, and brain damage to the dotor's office to ask some questions about it. Doctors had no clue. Had no idea how to continue the process along and reccomended allergy testing. He said that he consulted Dr. Greene at Columbia, and if a person's genetic... -
ARCHIVED Non Celiac Going Gluten-free
mommida replied to krazikat's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have chosen not to eat soy. I don't care if anyone else has a problem with that. That would be their problem, not mine. Make sure you are getting a balanced diet, whatever you decide. Laura -
ARCHIVED Small Window For Preventing Celiac Disease?
mommida replied to luvs2eat's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I followed the ped. advice at the time and intorduced the gluten foods at the proper "window". It didn't help my kids any. They are on a gluten free diet for life. One has been diagnosed the other hasn't, but has very bad things happen when he eats gluten. Laura -
ARCHIVED Kid #2... Should Non-cd Mom Be Gf Durring Pg?
mommida replied to VydorScope's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The statistic would say your wife and baby to be have a 1 in 10 chance of celiac disease. YOu could try genetic testing with a genetic counselor for a more accurate statistic for your family situation. Your wife should really get tested to determine what kind of diet would be the best for her and the baby she is growing. (From your previous posts I didn... -
ARCHIVED Vanilla Extract
mommida replied to kerrera's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
McCormick's policy is not to HIDE any gluten on the labels. Read the labels to make sure it is gluten free. I haven't found any McCormick spice I was interested in buying that had any gluten in the ingredients, yet. I use Flavororganics vanilla too. I buy it in bulk from a co-op I joined. It has saved me a lot of time and money. The catalogue lists... -
ARCHIVED Vomiting
mommida replied to betharlene24's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Vomiting is more common with the younger children. My daughter would vomit and "D" every time she was exposed to gluten. During the first weeks she was on the gluten free diet she started eating dog food, and cat food. Totally sick! I know. It could have been a symptom of pica (severe anemia) or she was just that mad about the diet change. Get back... -
The first thing to do is clean out the foods / condiments that contain gluten, or at least clearly mark them. Don't forget the cross contaminated butter, peanut butter, jelly, and so on. If you're sharing the kitchen with others learn and teach the "gob drop". If you're not sure about a product put in holding area, until you are sure it is safe. The...

ARCHIVED Pregnancy Baby Question
mommida replied to laurieb119's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm not a doctor. The articles I have read recently say to breastfeed. It is supposed to delay Celiac and there is proof that the baby's stomach is healthier. A new article released this past week encourages introducing gluten to the baby's diet in the "window" of time. My kids were both breastfed and "solid" food was started at the perfect window,... -

ARCHIVED What Is Your Ethnic Origin?
mommida replied to Emme999's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Those 60 year-olds lived through the famine in Europe from WW2? The famine in Belguim that gave us the information to avoid gluten. The failure to thrive/ malnourished children with this "wasting away disease" did better when the standard diet was eliminated. There are biblical accounts describing Celiac symptoms. I would think the disease has been around... -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Ethnic Origin?
mommida replied to Emme999's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have read the cultural connections has to due with - when the people started to cultivate wheat. Northern Europe was later to begin farming. Ireland had suffered the potato famine, the main source of their diet. The less time for the area population digesting wheat, the higher incidence of gluten sensitivity and Celiac. Well that's the theory of the... -
ARCHIVED Irish Heritage And Celiac's
mommida replied to Queen Serenity's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My great grandmother on my father's side was a Swede. The family came from germany on my dad's side. My grandfather would say the word "Cashoub" (completely guessing on the spelling and don't know if it is deregatory.) when asked about hereditory. He spoke seven languages, so it may even be a dialect issue to track down that word too. My mother's side... -

ARCHIVED Daughters Celiac Panel Negative!
mommida replied to Twister2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter had only 1 slighty elavated test result. She tested positive genetically for DQ2 and DQ8. (Do I sound like a broken record or what?) I agree with Nini. You will have to take into consideration the dietary response, because what Kaiti said about the tests accuracy in a patient your child's age is not very accurate. Laura -
ARCHIVED My Son Has Cd
mommida replied to fatherof4yearold's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Keep a gluten free medication list on hand at all times. After hours urgent care for say an ear infection at midnight will be a lot less stressfull. I did buy a refurbished palm to hand over to the babysitters, doctors, and pharmacy personel. I don't need it for grocery shopping trips anymore. It was a lifesaver at first, and made things a lot easier... -
ARCHIVED My Son Has Cd
mommida replied to fatherof4yearold's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
A good book to read, Kids with Celiac Disease by Danna Korn. Read the food labels with your child, your actions speak louder than words. You may be advised to add screening tests for various things i.e. thyroid screening that are connected to Celiac. There is supposed to be an increased risk of developing an eating disorder!!? I am trying to make sure...
